Sounding great Paul! I love how you’re locked into the track but able to let it breathe. When you open things up toward the end, I was thinking “I’d love if he’d let loose some more”...but YOU knew how much to add and that anymore would be overplaying...we have to serve the song. You’re the man!

Thanks Travis! Yes, this song has to be respected and sometimes just one fill too much can really ruin the groove so I gave it just enough to add a little spice but still keeping it simple respecting the music. Thanks for checking it out!!

Nice! Love the fills and accents you did to 'personalize" it. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Bro: One word..."Perfection!"...This is a great video!...I loved it!...You captured all of the parts that we expect and we're waiting for; while at the same time making it your own!!...That's the way to "Do Eeeeet!"...LOL...
Another great thing about your take is that you set up a pattern by doing the same fill at the end of the first two choruses and then deviate from that for the ending chorus (the triplet fill)...This creates surprise and excitement in the song!...Love it!!...Also, great point about the driving "four-on-the-floor" kick drum part...This can often be overlooked...But, the difference between a kick just on one and three vs. a kick on all quarter notes is HUGE!...Especially when heard on a powerful stereo or live through P.A. subs...
As I told you before, I had the pleasure of meeting Marc Droubay many years ago at a drum clinic...My big take-away: it was not really all of his decision on what to play for this song...A song this huge (for a blockbuster movie like "Rocky III") gets heavily scrutinized by producers...So, his approach was to play it straight forward, solid, and BIG...There are a lot of classy touches (like the hi-hat falling out after the first chorus break and coming back in for the second verse...simple, but classy!...I still love these songs with sparse drums because the space allows the drums to "breathe" and sound HUGE!..."Less really can be more", as you said...
Lastly, one thing I always heard in my head: I always wanted to add a china at the ending of the song as an "answer-call" to the guitar...This is done with a tambourine on the actual recording...But, I always heard china accents in my head...Similar to the china's in the chorus of "Maggy"...
Thanks for the great video!...I enjoyed it!!
    Later Bro, Jon

Excellent. You bring back the memories. Question, are the drums playing on the other track as well or do you have a way to cut out the drum track?

    • @babaloop

Hey now, great question! All the tracks I use are drumless with the original drums removed. So all you are hearing is my drums and my playing.

I believe you were using some patterns that you were demonstrating in previous videos. Very cool how things come together. Keep Rockin' Mr. Monroe!

Hi paul this is a cool song from movie Rocky I did that too.One question, why do most older drummers learn drums by ear? I have read in most biographies
They rehearsed a lot of time with the songs. Did you do that too?

If I’m learning a new tune, I usually listen to it about 3-5 times. Then I’ll play through it once or twice before I record it. A lot of players play by ear because they may not read music or have any technical training or have never taken a lesson in their life. Our guitar player from XYZ also was self taught so learned everything by ear. I respect all who have done that.

i learn most songs by ear unless they get complicated then i may look for the music. i dunno why anyone would need to have this written down for them to play, it's as simple as it gets tbh
