Best laugh ever - John Candy in Splash

  • An oddball moment in one of my favourite movie scenes with Tom Hanks and John Candy. Freddie Bauer (John Candy) laughs at Mrs Stimler's (Dody Goodman) unfortunate accident of getting struck in the head by lightning. Just one of the funniest laughs ever! And a really odd moment that has no bearing on the rest of the movie!! Copyright with the movie owners.

I was working as an EMT at Queen of Angels hospital in 1984. A heavyset guy came in with a twisted ankle. In completing the paperwork I asked him "what's your occupation?" He replied " I'm an actor". I laughed to myself and thought Yeah, Right. Everybody in LA thinks they are actors. It was John Candy. I didn't realize who he was until after watching "Splash". True story.

You mentioning 1984 reminds me that John was initially picked to play the role of Dana Barrett’s eccentric neighbor in Ghostbusters…he had differing ideas as to how the role should be played, suggesting such things as portraying him with a German accent, etc. When it became clear his idea of the character wasn’t gonna work with what Ivan Reitman and the others had in mind, they parted ways with John, and approached Rick Moranis for the role-Rick knew what they were looking for with the character, and it was a perfect fit…thus, the nerdy and lovable Louis Tully.
Also, the mention of John having a twisted ankle reminds me of when I myself wound up with one as a result of not paying attention to what I was doing, and slipping off a curb…my first time on crutches. Man, that ankle was swollen, and as black and blue as anything.

He was so down to earth. I met him at University of Guelph. He bought part of the Argos football team with Wayne Gretzky in early 90’s and they held their training camp there. He talked to everyone. Was a massive guy but you felt like you could have a beer with him.

My favorite line ever from him in a movie was from Planes, trains and automobiles. When he was talking to Steve Martin about habits the other had were annoying. He told steve Martin that he played with his testicles too much. Steve Martin denied it. John Candy said something like " Who are you kidding, you do more ball handling in one day than Larry Bird does in an entire season". Steve Martin said " Do you know what would make me happy" ? John Candy said " Maybe an extra set of balls and a couple of more fingers"?

      "Those aren't pillows"
Or my fav (one of them), "I've never seen anyone picked up by the testicles before" and the look Steve Martin gives him.
I always thought though... he loved his wife so much... Maybe _she_ was in the trunk all the time? Now that would be a twist!

This was pretty good, but I maintain that the funniest sound ever to come out of John Candy was when he was playing Johnny LaRue on "SCTV." Guy Caballero would order him to go out on some horrible assignment, and LaRue would do this combination of weeping, groveling, and begging that was off-the-charts hilarious (partly because most of the time, he did a lot of blustering and bullying to get his way). Amazing how a big teddy bear like Candy could do such a convincing job of portraying an S.O.B.

Does my heart good to watch this. I miss John Candy. My favorite movie with him and Tom Hanks, is Volunteers. Funny, funny movie. Tom Tuttle from Tacoma Washington!!!! Fight fight fight for Washington State and victory!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. I remember listening to John Candy DJ in Dallas back in the late 80’s.
