    Two tips for visiting Haarlem next time. Go to the ‘DeDAKKAS’ on the roof of a parking garage in the city centre. GREAT VIEWS! (You can use the elevator of the parking garage, just go to the top floor. There is a restaurant there, but you can take in the views for free)
    One other thing is the JOPEN Kerk, which has a nice atmosphere and nice beers. (It is a beer brewery and bar) I don’t advice the restaurant in the top of Jopen kerk, just get some beers or do a lunch.

    Haarlem station is quite unique. On the south (city) side of platform 1 there may still be the living room of what I suppose used to be the station masters home.
    Then there are all the tiles and mosaics, and even stained glass windows.
    You were getting your coffee from the third class waiting room. In contrast, the space labelled 'first class' is very barren. I always found that a weird contrast.
    There used to be, and might still be, the original restrooms at the end of the platform, labelled Daames and Heeren, in old-fashioned spelling.

    Haarlem is a kind of Amsterdam in miniature, but much more authentic. I am an Amsterdammer, but I like coming to Haarlem. Our eldest daughter now lives there in a nice apartment. She often goes downtown by bike. She loves Amsterdam, but is now getting to know Haarlem and is starting to appreciate the city. I know the city of Haarlem quite well. I worked there for more than 10 years in the center at Justice Haarlem. Lots of nice and good restaurants and cafes.

    FYI: M.C. Escher used the beautiful chandeliers in the St. Bavo Church in a few of his drawings. And Hendrik Lorentz, who received the nobel price for physics in 1902 had his office in the Teylers museum. His science was instrumental for Einsteins relativity theory. And Einstein has said he saw him as his scientific father plus they were friends.
    Einstein was present during the funeral of Lorentz in Haarlem, and also met him in Leiden. (Einstein has applied for a job at the Leiden university, but they refused him…. OEPS!) When you travel from North Holland to Friesland across the afsluitdijk you will pass the Lorentz locks.

    Just reviewing this as my Dutch husband and I are planning an overnight in Haarlem next week, and he's very interested in the Teylers Museum you visited, though I want to first take him to one of my favourite coffee/cafés, the Brasserie de Paris and then Corrie ten Boom museum. I've been before, and my mother even met Corrie back when she was doing her touring, but my husband's never been. I thought it an up-close-and-personal view of how it was for Jews in hiding during WWII - less touristy than the Anne Frank house. And the Kus van Cactus looks yummy, but we've already booked an Indonesian dinner with 30% discount. I do plan to check out the Mexican restaurant one day, though. Cheers

    Yeah, that room in the back of the Museum made a big impression on me when I visited as a child. A big contributing factor was that, in the middle of the city, with at that time far more loud car traffic than today, it was serenely quiet. Growing up in the city, there was never a quiet moment, even at night cats would pass in the street I lived in, painting lights on the ceiling of my attic bedroom (as the curtains didn't quite close. At one time I turned the room into a Camera Obscura by closing off the window with some boards with a little hole in one of them.)

    One of my eldest friends got married in the Bavo church;-) 15 years ago already... time flies! As a kid I was so scared in churches because of the graves. Still creeps me out having to walk on them, silly but true!
    Haarlem also has a museum of the mind (museum van de geest/het Dolhuys), all about psychiatric treatments 16th century and beyond. It's small so interesting for a little visit when you're in Haarlem and want to do several things.
    As for shopping I would always go to a smaller city and avoid places like Den Haag/Rotterdam/Utrecht etc, because the experience is much better. Amersfoort is nice as well, as is Haarlem, but Deventer (yes, there she goes again;-) is well-known for all its specialty stores, so that would be a typical shopping destination as well. They even have a store with stuff for dachshund needs!
    Enjoy your week.❣

    • @bramharms72
      @bramharms72 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it may even be the oldest. Amsterdam-Haarlem was the first train-line in our country. I'm quite sure that line predates Amsterdam Centraal Station by a few decades so Haarlem station could be the oldest station still in use.

      @@TAndTGoDutch Yeah and you will have fun with your museumcard over there. But when you are so far up north, you could also combine it ( just make it a weekend/ Northern citytrip haha) with visiting Leeuwarden. This capital of Fryslan, which is more or less the same size as Leiden, has multiple musea and also an former prison of centuries old, which houses a variety of places like a hostel, city-library, restaurants and galleries.

    At Teyler’s Museum they once electrocuted a cow with a machine that could generate electricity. King Louis Bonaparte of Holland (the brother of the famous Napoleon) visited the museum and wanted to see the machine in action. Rather gruesome event. But then again cattle still gets slaughtered in the same way so wel can eat juicy burgers.
