    I own the 28’s in anthracite and yes…I have been waiting years for this. The theater has transformed my system in a massive way. Picked up the 77” version in black with the matching remote. You get what you pay for and not only is it amazing (mounted directly under my 77 C1) but is a design showpiece. Andrew-you are the best audio/video reviewer on TH-cam and appreciate your love for B&O. This Theater/28 combo is utterly incredible and worth the price-zero regrets. • @ThePhilTorretto
    @ThePhilTorretto ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I commented on the 28’s video last year when my wife and got to demo the 28’s in NYC. My jaw hit the floor when I heard them and my wife was literally moved to tears by their sound. The fact that my wife, who thinks the price of most audio gear is ridiculous, seriously considered buying them at $16k tells you everything…and their design was a HUGE factor in that. So I have no doubt that the Theater would sound nearly as good. But for both of us in the end that kind of money just couldn’t be justified for our financial situation. As Andrew said, if they were free the 28’s would be sitting in my room right now and I imagine a Theater would too. But they aren’t free and they will have to remain aspirational for us.

    Although it’s way above my pay grade to get anything from B&O, I love the brand. Their designs and style are stunning. The amount of options is insane, attention to detail is unmatched. It’s what most manufacturers lack today, complete and utter devotion not to just sound, but to the experience of the product and quality itself. The 28s are my dream list for sure. And one day it’ll happen. Theater in Oak looks absurdly good. Great review guys!

    • @AmmarMalik
      @AmmarMalik ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The drivers and amps are no better than what mainstream brands use. So I'm curious to know what's so high quality in the build that makes this 5 times more expensive than something like a Samsung.

    • @gavriushka
      @gavriushka ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@AmmarMalik you kind of answered your own question: the build quality, the way all the components are implemented and the time spent by the brand designing and thinking about every single tiny detail. I don’t doubt Samsung could make a great tower speaker form the same parts as a B&W 801D4 is made from. But will it make the 801D4? No. It’s like comparing BMW and Rolls Royce, they use mostly same parts in a ton of ways. Yet no one questions why RR costs literally 5-7 times more, or even 10 times right? That’s the difference here as well.

      @Space-O-2001 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I'm with you, the design helps integrate them into a neutral homely space rather than make it "man den'ish". Not justifying the price however I just wish other brands would realise we don't all want big black blocks dominating our family spaces.

    • @gavriushka
      @gavriushka ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Space-O-2001 I don’t agree with the price either, even though I’m kind of defending them here. I think the price is justified when it takes so much time to pay attention to every single detail, then put the hours into perfecting them, then hours into every part of the design, build quality and integration of speakers themselves and amps. This isn’t a piece for every guy or gal out there. It’s for those who actually have the money to buy one, and those who can truly appreciate the love and care the piece was built with. Samsung makes great sound bars. So do lots of other brands. Not many make B&W D4s and not many make B&O Beolab 90s, ya know?

      Sound bar with 11.4.6 six makes no sense.…
      I mean you can try and pretend like there’s stuff behind you for bouncing or whatever but that number surely is just marketing.
      They can’t seriously claim with credibility that you can bounce sound with that level of precision as though they were specific speaker at 11 different places in the room as well as for subwoofers even though they’re located on the same spot, that just on a technical level as an engineer does not make sense,
      That point you might as well call it a 96.42.312.. its a meaningless number.
      I’m not saying it doesn’t work well or sound good I just think that the numbers are ridiculous and pure marketing

      @@FreekHoekstra yes but I think you're making a bit of a false analogy and I've seen it a number of times. Of the main points of a sound bar setup it to avoid 11 seperate speakers and all the hassle associated with that. I went from a receiver based 7.1 non Atmos system to the 990B and there's just no comparison in my room. I'll never go back to a receiver. The Dragon is next level from what I've seen and heard. That's what I'll be looking at in a couple years.

      @FreekHoekstra ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@patb5266 i’m not saying it doesn’t do great surroundsound. Maybe it’s phenomenal I don’t know but that’s not the point.
      The numbers 11.4.6 don’t make any sense, those numbers don’t relate to anything that speaker does.
      You could’ve come up with an arbitrary set of numbers and it would’ve been just as accurate or in accurate.
      hence it’s just marketing, that says nothing about the quality of the product.
      Unless you believe there’s actually four subwoofers in that entire bar,
      And even if there are four woofers given the fact how close they are together you don’t get a proper dispersion of your bass because it fundamentally acts as one speaker because the low frequency means it moves as a singular wave front. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound phenomenal but it doesn’t mean that therefore doesn’t mean anything and it’s ridiculous
      I just hate marketing team slapping a bunch of bullshit numbers on stuff and I call it out.

    When I turned 22, I moved to San Francisco and visited a local B&O store. I didn’t have the money to buy anything B&O.
    On my third visit, the same salesperson I talked with prior, was patient and very friendly. He spent the time to demo several tv’s and speakers.
    On this visit, he told me he never expects any of his customers to buy anything. He figured that if he could inspire someone to grow and be successful simply by showing them B&O, it was an honor. Maybe someday they will comeback and buy B&O as part of their bucket list or be part of their celebration succeeding in their career/life.

    I think when it comes to value at the moment especially when just looking at the Theatre as a soundbar, it falls short to competitors, but looking as a soundbar + an audio processor (although exclusive to B&O ecosystem) I started to see the value. I heard that on the road map for 2023 B&O will add supports for their "bookshelf" equivalent speakers (like the Balance, Level, Beosound 2, etc.) to be used as part of the home theater system. If that's the case then I think the Theatre would be like a bargain in it's own category, as I really like the idea of using the Balance or Level as rear channels and then can take it apart to be use as portable speakers or ambience speakers on it's own, while other brands offer extensions to the soundbar to become a full system but the can't be taken apart to be used on it's own, not to mention the customizations in the processing that B&O has the full guide to each settings. I don't own any B&O speakers and I'm not financially capable of owning one but I do see the value in the flexibility & versatility within the Theatre when I look at it as something beyond than just a soundbar.
    P/s: Thank you for great contents and this welcoming community to share our hobbies, much appreciation for all your efforts ❤

    Never underestimate the "Cool AF" factor. You're living with these in your space and looking at them even when not listening to them. B&O has always nailed that "art with function" vibe. Their products are just as nice as display pieces as audio. I tend to go with a more old school vibe with discrete large format speakers (currently Cornwalls), but I have always respected B&O's approach. My system has more of a "blast from the past" vibe, while B&O has always felt like they belong on the cover of "The Home of the Future!"

    Guys! This was a great review. Best out there hands down. You totally saved the review in the last 3 or 4 minutes by saying, those that have been waiting for this already own B&O speakers. Absolutely true. I bought Beolab 17s back when they were launched in 2014 or so. Added a 19 in 2016. Then 18s in 2018. I was then stuck. I didn’t have a centre channel and I refused to buy a B&O tv as , unlike speakers, TV’s date SO quickly. It just seemed like a complete waste of cash. So when they finally released the Theatre. Oh boy. I can honestly say it’s lifted the performance of my entire range of speakers. So, this review was absolutely wonderful, but I would recommend going one step further and reviewing it by add the old 4000’s or which ever speakers you have laying about form bang and Olufsen. Because while you just reviewed it and costed it as a sound bar. For me it’s an AVR, tv stand (I attached my tv to it) (table top foot) and centre channel that pulled all my old speakers together and made one effing huge difference to my whole setup. 😂

I can't find this answer and hoping you know: With other B&O speakers connected via Powerlink, will the ATMOS heigh channel speakers still work with ATMOS content? I want to make sure that the Theatre doesn't revert to just being a center channel when connected to other speakers. Thanks in advance!

      Yes, and they have stayed true to that. Our friend used to have a stereo vinyl combination that looked gorgeous. I used to play Rocky on it and it sounded great especially considering it was a one box system.
      My family had a Technics / Sansui 9090/ Bose 901 with European walls. I had no clue how good that combination was as a child. The fact that I still liked the sound of the B&O is the highest praise you could give them.

    I have liked B&O stuff for years, however, always felt they get classed a bit like Bose from people who haven't lived with them. I used to do it myself, thought it was more design over quality. However, the quality is never lacking or behind others, but you do pay for it.
    I didn't buy a Stage until last year, but we changed our bedroom and needed a sound bar, so decided to get one along with a 48" LG Oled. The main reason I hadn't bought one already was no sub output, this to me was a galring ommision.
    I willl admit I nearly returned it, however, someone then said to ignore everything you normally think about adjusting the sound and set it up so regular TV sounds good. So I have virtualise on, the sound moved all the way to energetic and high bass (while keeping bass and treble in their own section flat).
    Now, my main system is Meridian DSP and the sitting room is Harbeth with a highly modded Quad 405-2 amp, so know what a decent sound is.
    I will be honest, the B&O stage went from being something I nearly returned, it just sounded a bit weak and lacking real bass with normal TV and films that were not hires, to becoming the single best hifi/hmome theatre purchase I have ever made since I started buying this stuff 35 years or so ago. The amount of bass from the stage once adjusted still makes me laugh, no one can believe there is no sub.
    So if you stilll have the Theatre maybe trying playing with the options pushing it to the extremes while listening to normal TV and see what you think.
    Also, on price, you have to remember that for years B&O customers have wanted a surround amp to use with their speakers, without being tied to a B&O TV. This is what the Theatre is. It is more than a soundbar, it is a home theatre system built into an incredible centre.
    To think you could pick up some cheap used B&O rears for a few hundred it starts to make more sense.
    I'm seriously tempted to sell all my Meridian gear and put a Theatre in as my main system. I will go and have a play with one over the next few weeks.
    But I would love to hear your thoughts of you do adjust the push the energetic, bass etc. more.
    Anyway, great channel, keep it up!

    I do think one of the hidden cost not mentioned that factor into its pricing is the theater is also a surround receiver which can connect multiple B&O speakers. However it is a function that is wasted on those who is simply using it as a soundbar.

    As Kristi mentions in the video I think it would be awesome to see some of the mainstream brands like Samsung, LG, and Sony design something for a tier above what they now have in their ranges of soundbars. For me, it has provided a facility to utilise my other b&o products seamlessly in a surround setup. Prior to this release, I've used my beolab 90 as fronts, and lab 18 as rears, running analogue cables through a third party processor. This setup was never quite seamless, and was clunky for a number of reasons including the difference in delays, sound levels, and cables running everywhere.
    The theatre brings this all together. No more sync issues. No more level issues. Digital input into all my speakers as b&o intended. WiSa as well means no cables anywhere. Not converting a signal between digital and analogue and back multiple times means that the music fidelity seems much more crisp too.
    Considering how much I've spent on the beolab 90 alone, the price of the theatre is a small one to get the most out of this as a whole setup. I practically threw my money at them when this thing was released, and couldn't be happier.

    I would use it as a soundbar for tv use and to play music. In Australia with the light wood grille it’s $16,000 and no way most people could afford that. The Ambeo is $4000 so it’s a massive price difference even though the B & O sounds amazing. I have heard it with Dolby Atmos and was great. Like Andrew said listening with tv through it was ok.

    It’s unfortunate with that price tag you can clearly hear that it didn’t deliver the WOW-factor. I heard both B&O soundbars the other day & the Theatre has clearly more bass than the Stage (6.5 inch woofers vs. 4 inch) but the clarity of speech was better on the less expensive Stage, especially in music. You can argue that i didn’t taste every setting on both bars but that was how the shop had set it up..

    Having worked in the repair of AV including B&O, the design of their products has always
    made them desirable.
    They have never been affordable for most of us, so i consider myself lucky to have worked
    on them.
    Their performance has mostly been a cut above other brands, i say mostly as they have made
    a few lacklustre models.
    If you have the funds and the right room, then great go for it, but at this price level you are not
    getting value for money, a full seperates system with Atmos speakers will outperform it
    and at a lower price.
    I think it is for buyers that want a neat solution without having the luxury of a dedicated home
    cinema room.
    Even if i won the lottery, the price is just way too much to even consider it against a full Atmos
    system.

While they look good they are not as Good as those B/O. It's the same way people will look at me for wearing (Double Ralph Lauren or purple Label) if you can't see the value in higher end things then you can't justify the price. • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I preferred it on because a lot of the time we had it on it was just playing Internet Radio type content and the loudness feature definitely helps with low-level listening. That said, when I was going for critical listening or viewing, I used the bar with it off and in its direct mode. Nothing against B&O's house curve, but I thought the bar did just a bit better with no added processing most times. For stereo or lesser broadcasts, their processing DEFINITELY helps. Hope you're doing well Steve!

    As a kinda sorta answer to your question of the day, I have another question. You mentioned that a large number would use this as a center channel with 4 BEOSOUND 28 which cost $15,000 a pair. So, realistically, if you had $30,000 for 4 BEOSOUND 28 and another $8,000, for almost $40,000. Obviously I have no idea what I'm talking about, but it seems to me that $40,000 could buy a custom speaker setup that would be equal to or better than what B&O is offering. This is a real question. Is $38,000 for 5 B&O speakers really comparable to, or even possibly better than spending $40,000 on a custom setup?

    Honestly I've always considered B&O's higher end offerings to be as much a style choice as a sound performance choice, bordering on architectural in nature. You see big B&O speakers in a room and instantly you can almost intuit what the rest of that space looks and feels like from the wall paint color to the furniture fabric.
    Now, saying that, I've always been a dark wood finish and coffee tones kind of guy so I can geek out on B&O's technology but never felt the desire to actually own their products. Not to mention the fact that the pricing makes me wonder how many other nice things some of that money could be put towards.
    Great review once again. Big THANK YOU to Kristi for keeping your finger on the pulse and asking the 'obvious' question. I just KNEW Andrew was gonna err on the side of a more traditional two speaker stereo setup. After all, he's "recovering" and not "recovered", right?

    Thank you for the review, as I already said once, you own one of the few channels here (or the only one) who got the credibility for being able to do such a reviews, and so I really appreciate that you covered also this "crazy" soundbar. Escaping the luxury/exclusivity conversation, but just talk technically, I've checked couple of times if this soundbar could become the center channel of a B&O system paired with a couple of front L/R channels and some surrounds, but in their literature (manuals and website) is not confirmed (as far as I found), but that this can only be paired with a couple of surrounds, becoming L/C/R and atmos channels. If instead you are right (and there are no doubts that you have a direct connection with them also for these aspects), this product could became right the center channel for an aesthetics/technical match with a B&O sound system if you want to use your TV/display insted of a Beovision Harmony that for the moment is not available with the 97" OLED panel, for example. In this way, this soundbar got a few more sense (IMHO).

I've really enjoyed the sound of the Theatre so far, and for a single soundbar, I have a hard time imagining any other soundbar being as full range sound wise. That said, like you mentioned in the review, the surround sound performance really isn't there. It likely doesn't sound 7 times better than my old Samsung soundbar, but as a single speaker setup, it sounds amazing. To help with the surround sound performance, I placed an order for a pair of used Beolab 6000s. As the center point of a very carefree surround sound system, it seems like a great product.

    You can pick up very good old bang olufsen 7.2 sound bar designed for the old 7 series tvs 750 watts cast aluminium enclosure for less than 200 dollar retailed many thousands though you will have to purchase and add on bluetooth adapter and power source as they were designed specifically for B&O they still produce a nice crisp quality sound

      If you're willing to shop 2nd hand B&O there are a lot of great "deals" out there for sure.

    Great review! Gulp! being in Canada, $10,700 CAD?? Justifying the price of the B&O is difficult if not impossible. I suppose, if money was no concern, it is totally cool! That said, there are so many options that would crush the B&O in my opinion. Cheers!

    For sure a fan of the B&O offerings, but as I am mostly into just stereo this one isn't for me.
    I like that the B&O remote got its well deserved praise, to me remotes are often overlooked and even with high end gear you tend to get really crappy cheap feeling plastic ones. But there is just something to the feel of quality when using a remote, the B&O one you don't hide away as the others. It is all part of the experience.

    The B&O fits in your home very good esthetically. You seem to like the typical Scandinavian design, light and sparse but very tasteful.

    I know the price is quite steep. However i do think you have to see this in perspective. The Theatre is made as a dedicated sound system (bar) however it really begins to shine when you add multiple speakers because its a receiver as well. I think this is the big catch / ahead of the curve move what B&O tries to pull off. Which other manufacturer lets you use speakers from 20 / 30 years ago or more recent? I'm not even talking about their true image sound processing, thats just amazing and i have never heared anything like it.
    The price is steep, but you get what you pay for. Its quite a piece of art as well. I love those comments that say 1000 dollars / euros and i can get something better. No you can't its all about priorities. And for me B&O is design and great audio quality in one package.
    Rocking on with my Theatre combined with 28's as fronts, 18's as backs and a lab 19 to compliment the extra headroom for the LFE.
    Andrew (and Kristi) great review! Hope you both get to do the 50's or 90's those are some marvelous speakers as well.

    The Sounstage is amazing for a bedroom. The Bose 700 hurt my ears even when turned down the peaks were grating. The problem was the small room. The Soundstage was a perfect fit. The best dialogue ever in a Soundbar. Equally great for streaming music.
    The Bose 900 is a great soundbar but the Bose 650 beats it ev3n if you add the Omni Jewels for surrounds. $6,800 is insane!

    Thanks for the review! My home is art Deco (Heirlooms passed down).... so lol. Know you will love that, as this would look a bit out of place in that environment.

    Would love you to further explore the topic you brought up in here of setting up a sound system in an open concept living space. Our living room has 2 close walls (front and right) and two far walls twice as far from the listener’s position (back of adjacent kitchen, and left of adjacent dining room).

    My Theatre will be installed on Friday, replacing a BeoLab 14 installation. Really excited what my wife thinks as she is the sound afficionado in the house 😂

    No-one’s going to agree with me because of the relentless demonisation of them, but I’ll put the Portable CD Player forward. Unless you bought a cheap arsed one, one without dependable error correction, they were perfectly fit for purpose, and put the nail in the coffin for the vulnerable Cassette Tape (which had a bad habit of melting or stretching in the Aussie heat). My beloved Sony D-CJ01 with mp3 reading capability certainly softened me up for the coming iPod for Windows. As a bridging technology to mp3 players, I think they were essential. I’d also give the Bose Acoustimass a mention as a gateway to what is today a massive market for Subwoofers.

    I would love to own one, but in South Africa the Theater, once available, will likely remain aspirational for most. I’ll definitely be visiting our B&O store to listen to one though. As usual, B&O finds a way to craft a product that tugs at the heart strings. :)

    Taking delivery of my Theatre end of next month, perfect companion for older b&o speaker like my beolab 5‘s. Other than that, even i have to say the price is too high and most people are suited better with a different soundbar. Just to have the wood in „black oak“ it cost me 1200€ extra compared to the other wood covers. Can‘t wait to hear the theatre in combination with beolab 5s and 6 stealth acoustics ceiling speakers, this might be my end level audio setup.

    If you do one of those follow up videos you've been doing lately, you should try to use those Bang speakers you "pimped-up" (the ones you have a wooden grill made for them) as rear or front LR channels
