We'd get more if we were around other people in other places. America spends as little effort as it can to publicize and accentuate blacks gifts and talents. And there isn't yet financial backers to promote and produce these on a wide basis like football. We had it for a little while with double dutch. It seems that it's only a few who have the imagination to produce multi-talent content.

The girls dancing in the middle are actually not cheerleaders but majorettes. They are dancers specifically for the band and the style of dancing they do is unique to marching bands. They often were more conservative outfits and dance more jazz like than cheerleaders.

A lot has changed over the years…old majorette here…when I was in my High School band, being a majorette, you had a routine and your instrument was the baton to twirl…the outfits were like super sparkle, full bathing suits, flesh color stockings and white boots similar to low cut cowboy boots, low heel and a tassel. Our routine wasn’t so provocative…not judging, just saying a lot has changed. ❤️But I love a band that can play and maneuver so well👏🏽It takes a lot of practice to be this great…There were a many days the band didn’t get home until late at night. Miami Central aka Baby Rattlers back in my day, because our band director was a FAMU Alumni…fun days👏🏽

Welcome to the world of HBCU (Historically Black College/University. Back when Blacks couldn't attend white colleges during segregation times, these schools were formed to teach black youth. They are now integrated, but most of these schools are still primarily black attended.) These bands are different from most big "white" universities. There aren't a lot of people in the stands usually, but the ones who do come are usually there for the bands. The bands rule the day. They play mostly black R&B songs along with some Jazz, and usually the more modern and popular tunes on the radio at the time. If you go down this rabbit hole, I'm sure you'll enjoy the journey....

As a former band mom of a 'trumpet', I can tell you, these kids put in a TON of practice each season and it doesn't stop when they are perfect. You're correct Carol, the difference between tv and actually being there is AMAZING. The marching, maneuvering, playing, coordination of all - it leaves you breathless and all goosebumpy. I'm so glad you both enjoy this. My daughter spent 4 years of high school and 4 years of college in their marching bands. She also played in orchestra, concert bands, etc. Post college she played professionally in a Swing Band (Swing music) and also played for Bugles Across America, which is an organization where civilians play Taps at military funerals. She also played Taps for 2 of her uncles and her Papa (Grandfather) when he passed away.

I am a proud band mom as well. My daughter graduated from Cheyney University, YOU KNOW! When she told me she was going to be a drummer 🥁. Not discourage her, I asked her how could this be when you never played an instrument. She said "mom I know beats". When I first saw her play at homecoming I was speechless. Those kids worked! From then on I was at every performance. My sister and I fried chicken and made potato salad for them in the dorm's kitchen. By the middle of her third year, she was given the title of section leader. She never played before, didn't read music, but she played her booty off. She was known as the Devin Miles (Drum Line) of Cheyney University. I'm so proud of her and that she went to a HBCU. When her band played in my area, Cheyney was the only all black band. Well, when it was time for them perform. The crowd lost their minds and the audience was mostly white. For three years I had the pleasure to say that is my baby leading the drummers. It was so exciting and I miss it so.

Some of my friends went to HBCU's, but I never got to visit during college...went to Penn State, because of having to work and put in extra time with classes, (due to ADHD).

I have one point of correction- this isn’t just “America,” it’s “Black America.” I make the distinction because this is a Black university (not that others can’t attend). It exists because we weren’t allowed to attend white universities. There is nothing like the soul and passion of Black people. Our influence on music, worldwide, attests to that. The things y'all have done this last year (and prior, but this year has been outstanding IMO) have made me proud to be a Mississippian (even though I sometimes want to pop some of my relatives upside the head for a few backwards opinions). I think a lot of people don't understand the hours of intense daily practice that goes into this. Learning the songs, the marching routines, and being able to do both while learning to breath while playing their instrument. It's very hard work and bands don't get enough credit in my opinion. My son was in band and spent hours outside in the heat and cold daily perfecting their routines and still had to find time to study for their academic courses. And not only do they have to perform at games, they also have ongoing competitions around the state and nation throughout the year. Total respect.

I love y'all's reaction to this band! I'm from Mississippi, and my husband, daughter and I lived just up the road (about a mile or two) from JSU in South Jackson, back in 2015. It was great living there, because a lot of the time, we could sit on our front porch and listen to the band while they practiced, and when they were playing during a home game. We loved it! That was when I became a fan of The Sonic Boom. They are top-notch! And it thrills me when I see them perform on a national level, and now getting recognized at an international level! 😊

Ohio State University showcases one style of marching band prevalent in the US but I am so glad you looked at Jackson State. Jackson State is an HBCU--a historically Black college/university. There are quite a few HBCUs in the US and their bands typically show this marching style--this is called a Show band style.
While all US marching bands march in formation, the Show band style also emphasizes showmanship, dancing of the dance teams and Drum majors and also some dancing of the main band. The songs played are also from popular music like in this case, the R and B star Usher.
HBCU bands are known for this type of performance and have even been paid to be guest bands when a schools band could not show up. HBCU bands have been featured on commercials and in special appearances in Europe, etc.
Loved your reaction and also your other channel not a cooking show!

The ground level shots help give the perspective of how the band members are navigating around. Most of these band performance video are shot from overhead to show the formations, but on the field it's pretty mindboggling that they are not only playing each song, here they also dance in unison, but then know how to get into position. Kind of controlled chaos. LOL

I went to Jackson State for my PhD. It was an incredible experience! The band is incredible! The HBCU has battles of the bands in the south - it’s huge. I live in New Orleans and they are well-known for their talent.

JSU gets DOWN! When I was in high school, my friends and I would go to the football classics up here in Chicago- which were two HBCUs playing against each other. Whenever JSU was playing, they had the crowd going crazy. They always won the Battle of the Bands during halftime.

At Jackson State and throughout the United States, we call these beautiful young ladies The Prancing J-Settes. Whenever we move (Da Boom), they move.
