@@chevalierkraken Yeah, but I meant it in a way that, for example, it is technically possible to port, say Resident Evil 2 into the Jaguar. But the issue is, no one is willing to spent that kind of money to do it. N64 RE2 is 64MB. The biggest Jaguar game released only has 4MB.
The problem with the Jaguar is that it offered precious little in terms of good exclusives. Atari was repeating a mistake they made with the 5200 here by releasing a console who's library is mostly just slightly nicer looking versions of games you can buy elsewhere.
Atari's ineptness is, in fact, one long and drawn out S@tanic Gematria ritual. That's their script. Nintendo's is being aggressive, Sega's was blundering and making too many add-ons. I decode these rituals and find the exact codes they're following
There is a big difference though. On the 5200 you have better versions of first-party games that were also available on the 2600. On the Jaguar most, if not all first-party games were exclusive. Instead, it was third parties that were releasing slightly enhanced versions of 16-bit games, out of laziness or lack of understanding of the hardware. For them this was the easy route, to make money out of already existing games. The fact the Jaguar wasn't selling well didn't encourage them to put more effort
NBA Jam, The Humans and Primal Rage are the ones that get a boost. I had Flashback on both consoles and they were extremely identical. It was one of my favorite Genesis games and I saw it for $5 on Jaguar at Kay Bee and I guess irrationally just bought it to have another good Jaguar game of which there were very few. I wasn't expecting it to be better but I was surprised by how completely identical it was. If you didn't have access to a 32X/Saturn/PS1 the NBA Jam port would've been really fun to have for a Jaguar only owner.
They should have called it "Flashback: The Quest For Identical". I totally get that argument of the Jaguar still being pretty great if that was all you had. I was one of those kids that had the 32x while my friends were getting a Playstation or N64 and I thought it was a lot of fun. It wasn't until years later that I heard the general consensus of the 32x. Also as a side note, I used to love Kay Bee. If only my parents had bought up the whole stock for 3 for $10 WWF Hasbro figures...
@@RetroComparisons Yeah I got a Jaguar new for $30 at KayBee on clearance and picked up most of my games there for $5/10. The Jag games I had that were fun were Tempest 2000, Pinball Fantasies, Flashback and Iron Soldier. The games I had that sucked were Cybermorph and Zool 2. I never saw AVP available on clearance or I'd have bough that for sure.
@@caseyhayes4590 Oh that's awesome! Nothing like a good closeout. If I recall there was some store we went to in like 91/92 that had tons of 2600 games dirt cheap and we got a bunch new. I guess no one wanted them at that point.
I have so many questions, like why they went through the trouble or redrawing all of the Double Dragon V sprites for the Jaguar version, or why Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story has different backgrounds, or why the players in NBA Jam have such big heads, or why Pitfall, Primal Rage and Troy Aikman NFL Football run at like half the framerate of the Genesis versions despite the Jaguar being so much more powerful.
Jaguar NBA Jam TE big heads are closer to the original arcade version. The Genesis port is just an updated roster of NBA Jam and a few QoL improvements.
@@64-Bit-Gamer I checked NBA Jam Tournament Edition arcade on MAME before typing my previous comment and the players' heads were nowhere that big. After some internet digging, though, turns out that the arcade, Playstation and Saturn versions of the game have a secret Big Head Mode cheat code but, if the info I found in a message board is correct, in the Jaguar version this cheat comes activated by default *and cannot be deactivated* (which apparently it isn't a bug but a feature; the Jaguar ROM doesn't even seem to contain the regular-sized head sprites, which sure is a choice).
The only advantage I see is the Jag had better colors, other than that the most of games seem better with more detail on SEGA with maybe only Primal rage being better on Jag.
Keep in mind it's less the jag in some of these instances, and simply developers not wanting to put forth much effort. Until the Saturn and PS1 came out and showed 32bit systems could push 16bit out of the picture in sales, developers weren't really wanting to invest much time in 32 bit quality 2D games. Not necessarily defending the jag, because it does have crippling hardware flaws and a terribly managed parent company, but there is some important context to a lot of it's issues
Man. Is it just me, or do the Mega Drive/Genesis versions look better and run better in most cases? The Jaguar clearly has brighter/more colours and can produce larger sprites. But for most of the games compared here, I prefer the Mega Drive versions. Especially the backgrounds on most of the Mega Drive games - they look just better detailed or animated. For example: - Dragon they has more animated characters in the background on the Mega Drive. - In Double Dragon V, the Mega Drive version has animated characters, but the Jag version doesn't have any background characters. The Jag version is more colourful, it's also a bit blurry around the edges. - In Fever Pitch Soccer, the grass is more pixilated in the Mega Drive version, but it weirdly looks better than the blurry mess on the Jag version. The Mega Drive version has crisper lines and pitch markings. - In The Humans, the Jag version is brighter and I think the foreground looks better/more detailed. But the background in the Mega Drive version looks way cooler, with the animated lava flowing. - Pitfall looks a little better on the Jaguar, with brighter colours there. But the Mega Drive version looks great still and I prefer the waterfall effect. - It's hard to tell with Syndicate, because I wasn't sure if those were the same areas of the game. But the Mega Drive's larger characters added more detail. And the game seems to run a lot smoother. I think only Primal Rage, Raiden and Troy Aikman Football looked and played significantly better on the Jaguar. It's a shame, because the Jaguar is hands down the more powerful console. It could run full 3D games that the Mega Drive couldn't do (without additional chipsets). I'm not saying the Jaguar versions look terrible. If I were playing them I probably wouldn't really notice or care. But side-by-side next to a console that was 4x less powerful (16-bit vs 64-bit), the Jaguar versions just don't look great.
Yeah I'm not really sure why some of these are equal or worse in some cases. Like Pitfall looks a bit better but has a worse framerate (which also happened with the 32x version). Syndicate is the same game but an enhanced port of the 16 bit versions.
Generally, Bill, I think the Jag does fair better but maybe not better enough. What I've been finding with these Jag vs comparisons so far is that it's been too many months since I've played NBA Jam; way, way too many years since I've played Cannon Fodder which I used to really enjoy; and that I still wish Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (and Bruce Lee: Quest for the Dragon for that matter) was a more fun game than it turned out to be.
I agree on all sentiments. When it comes to NBA Jam I need to start practicing the T.E. version for the Hartford Retro Expo this Saturday.
