2004 Land Rover Discovery "Knocking" Sound

  • Update as of August 25th, 2018:
I have some bad news for those who are keeping tabs on this video. The knocking noise has not stopped but new issues came up recently which has made this vehicle completely undrivable. Let me explain: the vehicle will not drive for more than 10 minutes without stalling without warning and there is some issue with the electrical system with automatic transmission. Here's my advice: do NOT buy a Land Rover/Jaguar/Porsche unless you are willing to spend time repairing the vehicle down the road. It's not worth your time or money. This car has since been traded as I drive a different vehicle now.
    Original video description before updates:
Here's our 2004 Land Rover Discovery 4.6L V8 engine making a loud knocking noise while running normally. As far as I know as a person with not much knowledge of cars this shouldn't be happening. A possible defect somewhere in the car perhaps, this has been happening over a year and the sound changes intensity at times. The car still runs like nothing is wrong, for now. The dealership was no help since they said it is a 50/50 chance it might break or not. You also need special equipment or something just to find out what's causing the sound.

crankshaft position sensor - it has a magnet in it that gets weak after 14 years and stops working when it gets up to temperature. The engine turns off when the sensor stops working. Relatively easy fix and cheap.

I have a 2004 with less then 100,000 miles.... I have the same noise.
It’s a slipped liner, honestly is just a Land Rover noise.... get used to it and drive it normal.
I’ve gone on several road trips 1000 miles plus over a weekend.... still runs strong
Change your head gaskets every two years and your crank shaft positioner sensor every other time.
Do it all your self it’s fairly easy and rewarding .

OMG. All these diagnoses are hilarious! It's one disaster diagnosis after another. If someone else is out there viewing this and concerned about this sound, don't be. I have a 2004 Disco and it makes this exact sound. I took it into Land Rover for another issue and they did an exhaustive inspection and came back with $10K of recommended repairs -- none of which had anything to do with this sound. Apparently, it's normal, as not a single word has been mentioned by the dealership claiming otherwise. None of the issues I had related to this noise, and half of them were not really necessary anyway. I'm driving 15K mile since with no problems. But I still have this sound. Don't worry about it.

    • @EnioHabev

  • @NZfabrock
    @NZfabrock 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Its wear on the crankshaft bearings, usually caused by idiots never changing the oil or excessive mileage. In my case previous owners never changed the oil for around 90000 kms so it sounds exactly like yours (I know it isnt a slipped liner because I have had the heads off twice). The only solution is to replace the crankshaft or regrind it if it has enough meat left on the bearing journals. Either way it means removing the engine form the vehicle and stripping it down. My needs doing but I will rebuild the whole engine when I do it. Wont affect the running of your car but it will probablly get worse and sound like shit. Your best fix for now is to do regular oil changes and may be put an additive into the oil for worn engines until you can fix it properly. Regarding the slipped liners, the discovery 2's were fitted with two types of V8 blocks. That is they were sonic tested for wall thickness between the cylinders after they were cast. If you look on the front of your v8 engine block you may see a paint mark in either yellow or blue (I found mine in the valley between the lifters above the cam). The blue blocks were minimum thickness fitted to the base model D2'S the yellow blocks which were the next level up were fitted to the high spec model D2'S like the ES range. If you find yours has a red paint mark on it you are lucky. These were the best but were only fitted to the Range Rover models, Land Rover may have fitted some of these into discovery models to run out old stock.

EnioHabev I am pretty mechanical and actually replaced the head gaskets myself last year. If it really is a slipped sleeve it can't be repaired so might as well drive it till she implodes. I could be a broken rocker or arm. I may go that far and check it. On mine it doesn't make the until after 1-2 minutes when first started. Which is why I am leaning towards a slipped sleeve (it takes a few minutes for the coolant to loosen up the sleeve and start slipping.) What ever it is sure does generate a lot of stares.

In a few places in the thread below you and others mentioning driving it until it goes bad or in one case until it 'implodes' that is a really bad idea. There is a significant difference in cost and downtime between fixing the sleeve issue with a top hat or other acceptable fixes and fixing an engine with a hole through the block or other catastrophic failure.
I can't wrap my head around the idea of driving it it until it blows it is honestly one of the most illogical things I have heard in automotive repair circles maybe the use of JB weld on bolts instead loctite is worse but not by much. Seriously fix it and save money and frustration down the road. Reach out to British Atlantic or go to land rovers forum get advice there.
Even if you plan on getting rid of it once the motor blows you are still probably going to have to pay for towing etc. Why do that?

Stephen Chandler Don't think so. It has been many years now since we have had this going on, I can't exactly just go to anybody since you need specific tools to work on a vehicle like this. I also don't like going to the dealership since they like to charge big even just to look at the car. There might be videos out there explaining this problem but I don't want to try fixing it myself since it's not worth it with the budget I have.
