Yes, yes!! 1969 on my 10th birthday my mother dropped me and 3 of my friends off at the Northwoods theater for Saturday matinee. A double feature with Where Eagles Dare and The Blue Max (which came out in '66). Can you imagine. That would never happen today.
I can relate. My father (half-Greek) took me to see the original 300 Spartans with Richard Eagan. I was eighteen when WER came out in 1969. Forty years later I wrote a novel, OUR PLAN TO KILL HITLER, during which I would listen to WED theme music to set the mood while writing. In 2009 I visited Hohenwerfen Castle which led me to write the novel.

You are referencing to the scene where the Gestapo Major is having drinks with the blonde woman inside a tavern, and during the conversation, she slips and opens up discrepancies in her claims of living in Düsseldorf. He silently picks up on it, suspects something, but doesn’t arrest her. That actor is still alive today, but the blonde woman died a few years after the movie originally hit theaters.
You are not the only one, I watched it maybe 50 times and it's still never enough for me. Of all WW2 movies this is the only one which really captured my soul.
Well, at least, Ron Goodwin had the good taste and ability to take his inpiration from Wagner's opera The Walkyrie. Very apt choice for a plot involving a castle and taking place near Bavaria !

I remember as a child watching this movie for the first time, being mesmerized and entranced by such powerful music, it actually made me feel as if I was embarking on a great adventure, it was truly an enjoyable experience.

In my opinion that film was Richard Burton's own James Bond movie. The scene around the table with the notebooks was pure unadulterated class.

The location cinematography, theme music, story telling & fantastic acting roles conspired together & made this film a classic for the ages.
