Video Request: Shop tour! With focus on any "unique" tools such as the old Chicago OD lapper. Or tools/machines that Suburban customized to make them better.
    Thanks!

Like your upbeat presentations and the insight on how to.
    Have watched all

    Don,
I like watching your series of machining tips and methods.
FYI, I too have a lot of the earlier version of Lutron dimmers with the side bank of little green indicators for showing the lighting intensity. I found that the Cree LED bulbs work very well with the older style Lutron light dimmers. Previously, I had to return another brand of LED lights that definitely did not work with dimmers unless one incandescent light remained wired in the series. I replaced more than 65 incandescent can lights with the Cree LED lights that have an integrated can bezel cover. Saved a bundle in electricity usage and also, did not replace any of the rather expensive Lutron dimmers.
Thank you for the series, Paul

Great stuff Don! I had only ever seen the "bulging" style laps. I have used them for small engine cylinders. And I have noticed just what you have said you have to be very conscience and cautious to lap evenly with them. I will have to check out those American Laps. Thanks for sharing

Don, very interesting and informative, as usual. BTW, the old Lutron controller wants to see a resistance at the output. An LED bulb won't give that. That's why it worked, even with one incandescent bulb.

About 25 years ago I made a machine similar to your drum lap for production polishing. I made the grinding drum from aluminum and copper clad it by cutting a slot along it's length to hold 3/16 copper sheet. I then filled the gap with solder and trued it on the lathe. For the drive roller I pressed semi-hard rubber onto a steel shaft and trued it. The difference was I made a guide below the centers and ran it like a centerless grinder. Not only did we get an outstanding finish but the O.D.'s were strait to .0002. My question is what material are your lapping tools made from? One looks like brass but can't tell about the others. I've made laps from brass , Ledloy , copper , tin and even wood so it's hard to tell by looking.

Like your story that is interesting. You are going to save a ton of money on electricity. I think for being made a lot in China they are also expensive. Lapping interests me more since I have done a little. Thanks.

Is that roll lapper kind of like a centerless grinder except for lapping? Do the rolls need trued up from time to time or do they lap themselves against each other all the time?

bcbloc02 The rolls need to be reground when they wear.

Don, loads of thanks for discussing the rarely seen machining topics here on TH-cam.
Do you have any tips for a rotary lapping machine? I've been fiddling with a Lapmaster 15 that fell into my lap (hah!), and I'd love to know about any gotchas beyond clean, clean, clean.

Everett Wilson We have a rotary lapping machine that we use. We will look into scheduling a video when the machine is not in use.

SuburbanTool Inc Excellent; thanks! Lapping is one of those things that's uncommon enough to find solid info on the 'net.

    Centerless lapping. Like centerless grinding?

My Neighbor, Alaska Hydraulics has a lap table. The gave me the tour.. I had never seen one.
I was just amazed. You know, very slow rotary table, various diamond lap compounds..
    But talk about flat... whew!
I think the lap may beat my surface grinder. What say you?

Mark Richardson Lapping is the next step after surface grinding.

I've never seen an old Spit Fire lapping machine but I'm ready to go buy some meehanite bar and make one for myself.
I'm actually looking to lap some .2512/.2514 dia blind holes x 1.80 deep after heat treating the D2 . Any Ideas?

SuburbanTool Inc after looking around the shop "Diamond Mold, Salt Lake City" I found a box of barrel laps and a few cans of Clover lapping compound.
The compound is probably 50 years old with the oil separated from the grit, so I just mixed it up with a pencil and it worked great.
What's the brand of that fancy white lapping compound that you're using at Suburban?
It took 3 days to get the old clover compound out of my finger nails.....lol :)
