  • Hello!
    It’s been a while, I hope you’re doing well.
    So this was supposed to be up, idk, when it was actually warm enough to wear it. I hope you find this tutorial of how to make this very summer cottagecore dress from scratch, the least bit helpful. If you have any questions or room for improvement please feel free to leave a comment.
    Some comments have pointed out this design MAY be more suited for slim to moderate sizes. My design was based off Hearts&Found's Loretta dress that you can find on Etsy in up to 4XL US size! The back of the dress is different from theirs though! I'm sorry if this tutorial is not adapted to your body type, I only have my own body to measure and design for at the moment! I’m so happy to see the younger generation wanting to try sewing! I’m a 65 year old grandmother who’s has sewn many things since my mother taught me at 11. Making your own clothes or things for the home gives you such a sense of accomplishment. Congratulations, you did a wonderful job! And you made your own patterns! I’m very impressed! Your dress was lovely.

      I wish my Grandma could've taught me to sew! She was very talented at quilting, but sadly she passed away before I was old enough to be near a needle.. Yes, I love the feeling of being able to make things yourself. Thank you so much!

      I’m 24 and finally getting into sewing properly, and I’m so glad to have my grandma to teach me! She used to be a seamstress and gave me her old Bernina machine years ago, which I’ll finally be putting to good use. We did some adjustments to my existing clothes together and next time she’s going to help me make a proper dress (I made a nice apron by myself in the meantime). It really is so fun to be able to custom make things and recycle old clothes you otherwise don’t wear anymore! I hope the younger generation in your life looks to you for knowledge as well

      @@petloverspy I’m so happy you have a grandma to teach you! That’s a wonderful way to really know her and what her life was like as well as gain a skill you’ll always have. Back in my day there were so many beautiful fabric stores out here (so CA). I think choices are more limited today but I may be wrong. Enjoy!

      I'm 28 and self-taught, but I started on an old 1940s Singer machine that was my aunt's mother in law's.
      Sadly, my grandmother passed many years ago and didn't know how to use a machine. She did hand sew.
      I learned via a retired teacher here on TH-cam.
      I now have a new machine (Brother) because the Singer unfortunately broke a part, and getting a replacement was more expensive than just getting a new one.
      I haven't ventured into making clothes yet, but I made curtains, cushions, and cloth napkins for my mother.

      I'm 23 trying to get into sewing! Sadly, my grandmother who is a very talented seamstress lives in a different place where I do now, so I don't have anyone that I can ask for advice atm, other than the internet. I'm thinking of reaching out to a local care home to see if they're interested in letting me get in touch with residents that are willing to teach! I've volunteered in carehomes before and I noticed how a lot of the residents there are lonely specially when their families are too busy to visit them, so I figured it'd be a 2-birds-1-stone situation to learn from them!

    Hi, I just wanted to revoke a little "joke" i made about the price of the original dress. The intention of the “joke” was how I personally can’t afford to spend that much money on one dress, but I didn’t consider that this is actually a fair price, if not too cheap, in order for the seamstress/seamster to get a fair wage. It’s actually made by I believe a small business called Heartsandfound, you can find them on Etsy.

      @user-ne2bb5nh7t 2 ปีที่แล้ว +141

      Even if it's a fair price for the work, not everyone can afford it. My local thriftstore sells fabric items by the pound, so I can buy lots and lots of white bedsheets for fabric for almost nothing at all. Because of my shape, handmade items or tailored items look best on me, but I would not be able to buy all of that myself from ethical, fair trade companies or individuals. There is nothing wrong with saying that something is too expensive for you, or that you can't afford it. As an artist myself, I only think it's rude when people harass the individual to lower their prices.

      Rather than looking down at a price the way the joke was made you can simply say its out of your budget and want to see if you can make it yourself. I was about to stop watching at that joke but I'm glad you addressed it in the comments! Thank you for trying to understand both sides!

    A nice trick for measuring skirts length: use the measuring tape upside down. This way you have the point zero of the tape at your desired hem length and can easily read the number at the point you’re holding it up.

    hiii, 5:04 actually, in pattern making of a blouse or drass that has no zipper (or pattern directly on fabric, whatever), use the chest/boobs/bust/tits measurement, yes, even if they are small, not the under bust or waist. the tits are larger than the under bust and waist (unless in plus size people that the belly or waist maybe are bigger than the tits) if we use the waist measurement, the drass will not pass our shoulders, but if we use the tits measurement, it will.
    if it was a pants/trousers, the larger measure is the larger part of our hips/butt.
    always use the largest measurement of your body, or the clothing will not fit you.
    i hope it makes sense, english is not my first language. ♥ kisses and hugs.
    edit: nevermind, it has zipper lmao. sorry

    When you make a muslin mockup to make sure that it works, rip it back apart and use it as your pattern. (If you have to make significant adjustments, cut a new replacement piece.) I figured out a long time ago, when I was making medieval clothes for me and my husband, that cloth pattern pieces are the best thing ever. They stick to all but the slickest fabrics, so you don't have to pin them, they don't get hard creases and refuse to lay flat (and you can always iron them if they wrinkle), and they don't blow around like a paper or tissue paper pattern if you have a fan on. Even weights aren't needed.

    • @ThriftFilippa
      @ThriftFilippa  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great tip, thank you! I think for draping it’s definitely the best option, so you don’t also have to make a pattern on paper. I personally find it easier using paper for making changes and alterations to the pattern as well as copying the pattern to make something else later on. But i definitely see the benefit of using cloth and i’ll have to try it! Thanks!

    You are very encouraging. I am going to start with a vintage shift like underwear thing that they wore under their corsets but over their bloomers (big pants to people not as old as me...knickers that is if you dont speak Brit English lol!) I thought, because its only rectangles and a couple of rectangles cut diagonally as gores and gussets, it has got to be fairly simple. If IT works, I think I will try yours because its so pretty and I have been wearing whats now called "Cottage core" and Dark Academia since before your parents were born....yeah, that old...an Original Punk Rocker actually! We were made to do sewing and cooking at school so I can actually knit, crochet and do some embroidery, however I have never got on with sewing machines...way too easy to break if theyre electrical...I can use manual hand and treadle machines but often find machines so much hassle that handsewing is better for me anyway...slow but nothing to break!

    I made this dress! It's the first piece of clothing I had ever made let alone a dress! And it turned out to be sooooo pretty that I am soo determined to keep on making my own clothing. Thank you so much for such a detailed tutorial. I think this tutorial doesn't just give you a guide to making this dress but it also lets us advance into how we can measure our body and come up with a pattern of our own. Just like you said in the beginning of the video, this was a challenge for me and I think I really developed my sewing skills through this video. For people who are beginners, don't worry if it"s going to be too difficult because if you follow the tutorial it would be really easy. The tutorial was so well made that it only took me two days to make this dress. I used sort of an old bedsheet looking cloth and although it does look beautiful, my dress doesn't really look like it's been manufactured. So I recommend people to use better cloth than just bedsheet or maybe even use a cloth with a pattern if you want it to give off a more manufacfured aura. Thank you again for your splendid guide to this dress, I really like the dress and I would have never been able to get it if not for this tutorial❤❤❤❤🎉🎉❤❤❤
