    I know of a goldsmith who collected all of their emery paper for 15 years, had it refined and made $16,000 back, purely for just not throwing away any bit of emery paper.

    I kinda guessed from your ring videos that scraps could easily be used for adding volume to molten rings or recycling them in other projects, but I never imagined there could be enough scraps to actually be exchanged for new tools or equipment. Always something new to learn.

    If you do it on your own Id love to see a video of you refining your gold scraps. It seems like an interesting process, especially from sweeps and the dust, as I wonder how you deal with the stuff that isn't gold that ends up in there. Like does it just burn off, or?

      It's a whole chemical process, very entertaining to see btw. But they mix different solutions that separate the metals becuase some metals are reactive to some solutions. I've seen videos of how they separate them and molten. Highly recomended.

    Never to worry gold scraps. You can use fire to separate purest gold. Don't feel guilty. I know of a friend who uses vacuum cleaner to clean his gold smith studio. The collects dust and throw them on a bin. Once the container is fill up, he uses heat and still able to turn gold dust into money. Once in a blue moon he cleans up his pipeline coming from his jewelry washing area, he is able to collect gold dust too. Nothing is wasted if you know how the process of collecting them.

    My grandfather was a policeman during WW2 and was sent to help in the city of Coventry during the blitz. He said the fires from the incendiary bombs were so bad that the gold in the jewellery quarter liquified and dripped through the floorboards. I know it’s not about scraps, but I was so shocked when grandad first told me that, it must have been like being in hell itself. So proud of my grandad that he stood for, and did his duty.

    That is Sooo awesome!!! I personally just want an actual jewelers bench. I have been working on a handmade bench that my neighbor made for me. And although i absolutely appreciate it and am so grateful there are many aspects of it that just dont work for me. For instance its entirely too tall I have my chair raised as high as it will go and I still had to buy a booster seat recently😳😁, it doesnt have a sweeps/catch drawer so ALL of my "sweeps" land on the floor😭. I hope to start saving soon to buy myself an actual bench (even been keeping an eye out for used ones) its just with my health issues and just life expenses in general I havent been able to save yet.
    Cant wait to see what you do with yours!!!💙

    • @moderngoldsmith
      @moderngoldsmith  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think selling is ever the best option unless it’s a private party sale. You’d be almost better off just giving your jewelry away to people you care about. But since it is YOUR jewelry, I’m a huge fan of restyling it to something you can love and enjoy now :)

    You could refine the gold and silver your self and maybe cut your input costs. That depends on the rate you receive for your scrap compared to the costs of acids etc and your interest in refining of course. It also depends on your need for fresh material for your work. The material you already have will be cheaper than buying more in the future given that the gold price will increase over time, so maybe you should at least keep some of the "known" gold for your stock of materials.
    What's this laser you speak of? Laser engraver? Laser Welder? Particularly if the new item of equipment will generate income greater than the expected increase in gold price, then you should swap your scrap for that equipment. That's just my 2 cents worth of input. 👍
