- Chise awakens in her bed to find Shannon watching over her and her hand transformed by a dragon's curse. Chise makes light of her troubles until Lindel tells her that the curse will fester in her body and eventually result in her death.

Which goes into healthy self-reliance and healthy friendships.

Angelica says she gave him an earful. And he's shaking. What did she really do to him. Probably punched him in the stomach again. Poor Elias. I always feel bad for his character. He was probably a child how messed with dark magic, and had to grow up as a monster. Maybe he was a teenager and and his family was killed just before he was transformed. Then he started walking through the woods, with no memories of his past and then met Lindel. He had to grow up and learn while being a monster hybrid.
I also theorized he was a failed chimera experiment of Cartaphilus, but it doesn't really make sense with some small bits of information.
Wizard of Arts I have a small theory similar to yours but it’s not at the same time. It’s more of a suggestion if you will. spoiler alert
So you know how that dragon at the auction looked when he went crazy? I found him incredibly similar to Elias- red eyes, black, feathers?, and correct me if I’m wrong, he had a skull too? Or a white head at that. It could just be apart of him as a dragon, but it’s been a while since I’ve watched the anime so I’m not sure

Yeah, like, it's bad losing an arm but what happens if she ask for Cartaphilus find other? I think this would work nice, since he does it for a long while... And the dragon? What happens if he get killed?

The only complaining I have about her character is that SHE HARDLY EVER SHOWS ANY EMOTION. She never really smiles, sometimes she cries, she got angry like twice. And, as shown here, she never becomes surprised. Even when she was flying as a Phoenix she had a vacant expression... like come on...
That's kinda what happens when you're emotionally stunted as a child. Some people grow up not knowing how to show emotions appropriately.
That's depression for you. This show depicts depression in the most realistic way, and Chise's progress out of it is also quite realistic, very slow but steady.
It's called poorly written character. She doesn't seem depressed, for it would mean she would at least have an emotional response whether its sadness, angry or guilty. Which can lead to tiredness, disinterest, hatred, or anxiety. It could be that she doesn't understand emotions, but given to her flashback, she was an emotional kid, so that wouldn't make sense either.
Elias is more emotional than she is, which isn't a good thing since she is the main character and Elias is suppose to be the emotionally strained one who gets taught by Chise to learn to have emotions.
Bad writing? It seems so.....
