They didn't know? You sure? Cuz it seems pretty obvious that (a) the intention was a duet and (b) if they read the music for their part, they can just follow the notes and it'll naturally harmonize (because that's what was composed). I'm not saying it was easy, I'm just saying that they didn't NOT know. I mean... I'm just assuming, but Occam's Razor, right?
