- たまたま訪れたこの日は琉球村の開村記念日でした。獅子舞の演舞がちょっと変わっていたのもそのためでしょうか？
直前に雨が降ってしまったため、「沖縄の駅ちゃんぷるー」施設内のちゃんぷるー劇場にて行われました。

This is a scenery of a lion dance from "Michijyunee" parade in Ryukyu Mura, a theme park in Okinawa, Japan. The day I visited was the park's 34th anniversary, so the parade and the lion dance looked like "special version".

More than 2,000 years. The Chinese emperor dispatched a number of large fleets. A large number of Chinese officials and elites arrived in ancient Japan 倭. Korea朝鮮. North Vietnam交趾 and Ryukyu琉球. To develop these very backward areas and establish a Chinese regime.
(ancient Japan 倭. Korea朝鮮. North Vietnam交趾) The King of Ryukyu琉球 and the aristocracy is Chinese immigrants and descendants. Their language is Chinese dialect 漢方言 and Chinese characters 漢字. 1429 ~ 1879. The name of the ancient Okinawa was "Ryukyu琉球" (the name set by the Chinese emperor. It is also the name of the historical record). It is one of the territories of the Chinese regime.
In ancient Ryukyu King琉球國王 , officials and nobles were Han people and descendants from Fujian 福建, China (elite sent by the Chinese emperor). They lived in the local Chinese palace. Chinese culture and Chinese characters naturally appeared in the local area.
Ryukyu Civilians are local indigenous people. They may be Southeast Asian races.
1609. The Chinese palace of "Ryukyu琉球" was occupied by the "indigenous people". China lost local actual sovereignty. After officially merged Japan日本 in 1879, "Ryukyu琉球" was renamed Okinawa沖繩.

can someone enlighten me as to what the story is?
I don't know the story either as there was no description during the show.
What I know is, in Okinawa you sometimes see companion(s) dancing with or playing with a lion. So I think those monkey kids are the companions. The story may be something like: the lion performs a dance, gets tired and falls asleep. Monkey kids sneak in to play trick on the lion. It wakes up and performs some extra acts with them.

@warlocks lhungThere are both Dragon and Lion dances in Chinese. The lion dance means chase away evil spirit and blessing.
I don't think it's a "copy", but indeed it looks somewhat similar to Chinese northern lion dance. I think Chinese lion dance is much more acrobatic.

Regarding lion dances in mainland of Japan: it is said to be introduced from China as part of "Gigaku" performance around 8th century. One of oldest lion's masks that exist in Japan has an inscription of year 752.
