The other racers are helping each others and buying each others time and sacrificing their lives to win and end this nightmarish race.

The Announcer hosts the race, which is meant to entertain eldritch gods, and the only way to end the race is to win, or else you will have to race until you wither away. Norton managed to win, but his friends who helped him along the way never made it back to reality, and now Norton must live with that guilt.
