Inert and live Malkara HESH warheads tested on a Conqueror tank with added spaced armor

- The Malkara was one of the earliest guided anti-tank missiles (ATGMs) and was unusual among such missiles in that it had a High-explosive squash head (HESH), also known as High Explosive Plastic (HEP), warhead instead of the more usual shaped charge HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank) warhead.
As the name implies, a Squash Head is not intended to perforate an armored target but mold its plastic explosive over the plate, which when detonated create a shockwave that in turn generates spall damaging whatever is behind the armor.
The tests pictured were carried out in 1977, by which time the Malkara had already been retired from service, as had the Conqueror heavy tank employed as a target. The addition of spaced armor makes a surface that is not ideal for the HESH warhead to adhere to while also creating an air gap that disrupts the explosive effects. The Conqueror crew demonstrate this lack of effectiveness by driving off under their own steam once the tests are complete.
This is some gorgeous testing! Uncommon armor, missile, and tank all on one video.
Amazing finger pointing
It makes you wonder why they bothered with missiles when there were digits of that caliber in the arsenal.
And still had enough punch to leave a mark on the armor underneath, scary stuff.
Indeed; in fact it wasn't (and isn't) designed to penetrate, but to spalling the interior part of the armor at impact.
The film left out the interior of the tank. If the squash head achieved the wanted results the exterior of the armour will be relatively unscathed but there will be a large section of detached and splintered armour inside, there is also to be said that the hatch of the driver was wrenched out by the explosion, the driver would have probably been killed.
If you ever paid attention on HESH detonation you would know that it leaves circular mark on outside of solid plate.
@@AKUJIVALDO and this is pertinent to the fact that interior was not shown because....
When was the last time defence contractors were on sight for testing/shakedowns wearing a tie and sport coat? Brilliant👏👏👏
Are you sure this was filmed in 1977? The hairstyles, apparel, mannerisms, grainy silent filmstock...it all seems to be from an era 30 years prior. But then I've seen this phenom before in other British film productions of this era. As if they were unconcerned or unaware of changing production styles of that time.
Yep. The Malkara was developed and in service in the 50s. The 70s was probably when this film was declassified.
Wonder if that was the Conqueror left in I of W museum car park 🤔 great video though 😊
Seeing as the tank drove away, one would have to conclude that the ultimate aim had not been achieved. Yes, some or all of the crew might be injured or dead, but the tank could be recovered under its own power and re-crewed.
Wow just wow.
What happened to the voice and what type of testing was this what about this HESH? It's hard to understand when there's no sound in this video what the test was trying to show
Need to see the inside surface of those strikes on the glacis plate and the turret cheek. I bet there was major scabbing / spalling damage inside.
Not when there are stand off panels. Which is what this test was. The video is just badly edited.
The crew would probably have been seriously injured if they were inside at the time of impact
is that a panzer 1?
Definitely not

wdym source?
Where in the video you see a Panzer I ?
@@panzerivausfg4062 r/woosh
@@panzerivausfg4062it's literally right there in the video, Clearly a panzer 1
This needs AC/DC's "TNT" as musical accompaniment, especially at the end.
See me ride out of the sunset
On your color TV screen
Out for all that I can get
If you know what I mean
Women to the left of me
And women to the right
Ain't got no gun, ain't got no knife
Don't you start no fight
'Cause I'm T.N.T. I'm dynamite
T.N.T. and I'll win the fight
T.N.T. I'm a power load
T.N.T. watch me explode!
I'm dirty, mean and mighty unclean
I'm a wanted man
Public enemy number one
Understand?
So, lock up your daughter, lock up your wife
Lock up your back door, run for your life
The man is back in town
So, don't you mess me around
'Cause I'm T.N.T. I'm dynamite
T.N.T. and I'll win the fight
T.N.T. I'm a power load
T.N.T. watch me explode
