  • Meet M. Sivasamy, a potter based in Karumathampatti near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu . He has built a clay refrigerator that can be used to store vegetables fresh for up to four days. He calls it the 'earthen refrigerator'.
    The earthen refrigerator comes in two sizes - two feet and two-and-a-half feet in length. It is priced at ₹1,600 and ₹1,800 and can be shipped across India.

    This needs to be propogated and promoted as part of sustainable development.

    • @RaviKumarTiwari
      @RaviKumarTiwari 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's sustainable in small amount only.
      The clay used for pottery is less and removing it also damage the land.
      It takes many years in 'soil cycle' to maintain that level.

    For anyone saying this can't hold large quantities of food: Usually people of the less financially stable family will buy them. Daily wage workers mostly. And so they buy fresh vegetables and milk every day. I have seen it in Koyambedu market. They don't buy for three days to a week. As such to keep the vegetables from morning till dinner time is enough. Because it will all get cooked within 24hrs. And so this is very convenient for them. That's the pro. The con is if everyone starts buying thinking it's sustainable living when only ppl who cannot afford an electric fridge should be buying it means there will be depletion of soil. Already it's next to impossible to find karaisal sand (Sand near a particular water source. It is quite ideal for buildings) to construct buildings nowadays. Pottery mud is not just some random mud. It can also be exhausted. So we must be careful.

      It can only be bought by higher/ middle class because these pots lose there cooling capacity after their pores are filled. And after 5-6/ months you need to reinvest 1600-1800rs. Where as a fridge of 12000 will last 10 years.

      when you look the environmental damage due modern refrigerators in a large scale you get to know that it is more sustainable to use this .
      refrigerators use electricity , the time & energy, required as compared to these mud pots also healthy

      I don't agree that clay used for pots will get depleted by large scale manufacture of pots! There are large communities in Tamil Nadu who eke out a living making and selling cooking vessels,kitchen items and pots for plants.

    It is much cheaper than electric refrigerator, no hitting, no indirect pollution, saving space. To make it popularize, it has to make more cheaper for common man. Like 300 to 400 rs variant. Not sure if possible but can think at least.

      There is a brand name called Mitti Cool in Gujarat who make the cubicle shape earthen refrigerators Theay have seems to be carried out certain experiment and proved to be good and has bigger space than the shown here in this video which is circular cylidrical shape. Please check it out. Their price however is expensive and costs in the range of 18K or so. But once installed no electricity and you get biiger space than this with proper glass door etc to it.

    An environmentally friendly way to preserve food items in the kitchen. What more it does not require expensive electricity ,does not make noise and only requires water. In many places there is electricity shortage and long periods of power cuts. So fridges become useless. I think this cooler preserves milk,curd,paneer, vegetables,eggs, meat and fish, better than a fridge. It is better if you wrap separate items in banana leaves. Further wide usage of this cooler will encourage native artisans to make these vessels. Young people can go around selling them in market places, giving them self employment.

    For anyone thinking this is "Mitti cool company copy" Check archeology dept documents. Ppl in ancient times have already been doing this. It's not "copy" It has long since existed all over India. If someone patents banana leaf serving method will you tolerate that? lol. These are all ancient practices. Nothing to "copy" from any particular company. Mitti cool isn't the only pottery company in India. Check Pondicherry and Madurai. Several gen run pottery stores exist and they even export. Like do North Indians think they "invented" everything or something? Come to South India and see how rich our culture is.
