Most of these worldwide waste ideas are useless in the real world and just move garbage around without helping anyone, but this is a REALLY good one. Biodegradable pads for all!
This is also a bad idea though. On a large scale it's not enviromentally friendly at all since you'd need to tear down millions of these trees in order to supply on a global scale.

Almost cried watching this. Im sure theres a lot of potential flaws, but this sounds like it could be revolutionary. Its especially interesting seeing so many men on board and comfortable talking about this and doing so much to help women. So many men just get grossed out and refuse to even think about periods. Periods need to stop being seen as a form of revolting punishment or curse! Its a part of life. Hopefully this is an effective solution thatll help women, especially women in rural areas. We take for granted how easily we have access to these items in our own lives.

Can’t they just take one lad and send it to labs to check for it’s biodegradability?
It would be fascinating to see them branch out even more by making medical gauze and wraps from this stuff since so much is used in hospitals. Or even masks at this rate.
Medical gauze is already made out of cotton, and NADs are coated in a very specific type of plastic so that they remain absorbent but do not stick to a wound. And medical waste has to be incinerated fully anyway.

India is such full of innovative and smart people, I personally think that this idea should be spread all over the world. Non biodegradable sanitary pads are disposed either by throwing or burning, which has obviously caused environmental problems. Imagine how big problems can be solve by this idea.

No my silly child. Idea and innovation is everywhere. Problem is how cost effective it's? Can it be automated into large production scale? How many people are truly afford to buy something that's more expensive?
Maybe can be upgraded into bio baby pants(pampers)
That's how ancient Indians used to think and were the first civilization to be environment friendly
1. Vegetarian meals
2. Use of bio degradable clay cups
3. Eating on banana leaves and sal leaves which after use was fed to the cows
4. Using dried cow dung cakes as bio fuels
5. Use of turmeric and neem leaves as antiseptic
There are hundreds of such examples.

I hope Saathi shares this technology with other countries such as the Philippines being one of the major exporters of banana products across the globe. This would be such a game changer and would really push people to practice sustainability. Having access to amazing sustainable products like this would open our eyes to seek better alternatives and would push large corporations to do the same. 💚

Banana s what we used to call no waste tree. We eat the stem, use the leaves to eat or feed to cattle and use the flower and fruit

Every part of a banana tree can be used! Also, I'm not sure why they say otherwise in the video but banana trees can actually bear fruits multiple times. We have several in the garden and we still get to enjoy the bananas from them every now and then.

Even though he doesn’t disclose what is used he still had the product and packaging tested in a lab and they concluded it was biodegradable that’s pretty noble of him
This is amazing. I'd like to thank all the men who helped the women be able to have a sanitized pad. It's miserable enough having the period, but it makes life a little better for those who have access to those items.
Government should provide subsidies to such projects so that final selling price would be affordable to all, especially economically weaker sections of the country.
Government do provide subsidies!! And if they can't they buy from them & distribute to NGOs! Also many Govt agencies are also involved but it will take some time.
trash is a big problem in india like in most other countries. it would be reasonable for the government to subsidize products that reduce trash problems in acknowledgement of the fact that it saves the country and the government trouble at the back end.

In Tamilnadu they were making sarees fifty years back in large quantities. They were very good shiny and durable. After polyester introduction it lost its market but still some weavers as a cottage industry do produce.

Absolutely love this idea. I remember my mother telling me how her generation and her mothers generation had to deal with their monthly cycle. About the same way most of these women are dealing with it. Sanitary products have come a long way since i was young. Thank God these men and women are realizing that the period is a fact of life not a curse or sin. Thank you kind sirs.

My mom used to have cotton pads that they washed out after use. They’ve started to reappear in Europe in the last few years.
Another huge problem surely are babies diapers, that could be another research project!
@@lillic8522 there are also rewashable baby diapers available now also. They are made of cloth with snaps and inside you can use a liner which can be made of recyclable material like bamboo fiber that you throw away and wash the diaper. In my country i can only find them online but they are readily available in other European countries in special shops. Throw away diapers made of a totally biodegradable material would be wonderful because they could be composted and no water used which would benefit countries in drought like mine. Also people are so squemish about everything nowadays that even the thought of washing a diaper like our grandma's used to do is inconceivable.
@@pollyjazz for my kids I partially used the cotton diapers like you described, but my daughter had skin problems with them. In the end we added our share to the plastic mountain (although in Zurich they burn the waste and produce with that the heating for a good part of the city.
But in any case it would be a good thing if diapers were made of a more ecological material.

This video reminds me of an Indian movies named “Pad man”. It was about a man in India who was tired was seeing women in rural ideas use cloths as pads as they didn’t had enough money to buy pads. So, he was determined to create pads that are cheep and easy to make. It was an amazing movie and this company is has an amazing idea too!

Akshay Kumar is the main protagonist, right? I love that movie as well, unfortunately, in Indonesia, Pad Man is almost unknown. It is basically like a hidden diamond. I keep telling friends of mine to look at the movie and wait for their reaction. Some really enjoy it, some others said the movie is so slow and quite boring. They enjoyed PK better.

As someone who uses washable pads, it’s great to see someone using a product that may be wasted for something necessary.

And the same goes for cloth diapers for babies, and those diapers have poop in them. Worked for centuries when all people had was cloth for diapers.
So long as everything is washed thoroughly, sanitized, and dried thoroughly, there shouldn't be a problem.
@@dickydarmawan6960 It's perfectly safe! I don't know why you would think it's unsafe. So long as the pads are changed very frequently and then properly washed and dried, there's absolutely no safety risk nor would there be any smell. In fact, there's naturally going to be a bit of odor from blood flow. As soon as it comes out, it does have an odor. The only thing that can be done is to change pads frequently, to minimize odor. But it's not at all a safety problem. And on heavy flow days, there's going to be more odor than at the end of a period when the flow is very light and tapering off. It has nothing to do with what kind of pad is being used.
Tampons, which are not reusable, are going to be more effective in reducing odor. However, there's more of a safety risk with using tampons, because it's placed inside the body and could provide an environment for harmful bacteria to grow rapidly, as it's warmer and more moist inside the body. I hope more research is done to make more effective pads outside of india. Ive definitely wanted a reusable pad or something, but unfortunately theres the higher risk of infection and toxic shock if done incorrectly.

Did they actually say that buried in the ground it will degrade in 6 months? I find that interesting as most things labelled as "biodegradable" actually require incredibly unique and specific conditions to biodegrade. If true, that's awesome!
most genuine natural fibres will be gone in 6 months if buried in a moist environment. I grow some sugarcane in my home garden, which has pretty tough stems & leaves, but I use it as raised garden top up soil when I harvest my root vegetables & it only takes about 2 months before the soil level drops again becasue the sugarcane has totally decomposed in the garden. If I dig it up at that point there's a small amount left, 6 months later, there's nothing left, no sign it was ever there. No idea exactly at what point it's totally gone, I don't dig it up regularly to check, 2 & 6 months is just when I've dug in the garden for other reasons expecting to hit the pile of pure sugarcane stems & leaves & found nothing, so I would expect banana fibre to be the same if nothing else is added to it

In any case, isn't that better than plastic that takes around 500 years to degrade? Even if it degrades in about a year or so it's the best option we have.

Visited banana pseudostem centre at navsari agricultural university just 2 months ago. Though the machines werent working as it was early in the morning we saw everything from biofertilizers to fibers. Great initiative by saathi they can grow more if they could use that technology to make biodegradable textiles.
I have an Engineering assignment for university looking at using bio waste for an unspecified purpose. My thought last night was looking into researching if onion skins (can't use them for composting/worm farms) could be worked into a biodegradable material for...menstrual pads. Looks like the market is already ahead of me.

well I guess you've got this one now & it's a pretty good one, but I would look at bio-char & the impact of getting carbon into the world's soils if you want something different to this story. You could use onion skins for that & banana stems & the rice stubble that causes all the pollution in Delhi & everything else. In charcoal form it's stable for 1000 years & locked out of the atmosphere & helping retain fertiliser & other chemicals to stop pollution. Trees hold small amounts of carbon while they're alive, but retaining that carbon in charcoal form makes it permanent & actually useful (which trees sadly are really not)

The middle of the banana tree stem is called Thor in Oriya, and is a delicacy in Oriya and Bengali culture! My mother still makes it with mustard seed paste and it's really delicious. Banana tree is definitely a game changer, will try to buy this pad soon

Nothing is wasted neither the trees nor the pads. Not to mention that‘s it‘s not synthetic or made of plastic. As even plastic pads can cause allergies and rashes sometimes. I hope his business thrives and more women get access to sanitary pads. I‘m happy the old traditions and superstition about women during their periods is slowly fading.
