Same thing Doug Collins said about Vince Carter when he decided to attend his college graduation which meant that he would not be available for the first half of game 7 of the playoffs. And Vince said it after he retired, in a team meeting, that all of his teammates told him to go to the graduation, he earned it. Same thing said about Myron Rolle, a Rhodes Scholar in the medical field, criticized for pursuing his education more than the NFL. Now Myron is a respected doctor. I swear, anytime a black player chooses something different from the stereotype, they're destroyed but at the same time there's clamor for "Black male role models", you just can't win either route you go.

When Jalen Brown said he wanted to launch Black Wall Street at that press conference when they asked what he plans to do with his "generational wealth" the got scared because they know that he is actually smart, intelligent enough and is socially concious enough to possibly do it. They don't like him because he speaks about uplifting his people and when you're black and an athlete they want you to "shut up and dribble". I'm not willing to go with their narrative that he thinks he's better than everyone else. I grew up in the hood in Chicago and recall a girl telling me "you think you're better than everyone else". It was because I chose not to hang out and be wild. My reply was "I know I'm better than that and you are too you just don't know it". Her comment was the Hood's equivalent of peer pressure. I quickly shut that down with my answer and left her speechless. I was faced again with it while serving in the Navy. Most of the brothers I hung out with drank more than I did. They tried to clown me saying things like "AAA you can't drink like us". My reply was I don't want to, I drink until I feel I've had enough". They never said things like that to me after that. I don't get or do peer pressure and never have.

I'm really happy for this brotha. Them folks mad because this can also be habit forming across the NBA and NFL and especially with the athletes receiving NIL deals in college and getting paid to play, which will eventually trinkle down to high schools across the country. Remember Malcolm Brogdon? Though more of the 6th man-role player, he too was side eyed for coming into the NBA with his Master's already. Richard Sherman, the 'ghetto Compton thug' who averaged a 4.2-4.4 GPA in high school and 3.9 at Stanford, and was on everyone's hit list for being a smart, talented black man, who talked trash, but was good at his position, and he went back and got his Master's too. Then Jalen Hurts went to get his Master's too, I believe. Them folks biggest fear though is more and more black athletes coming in, making hundreds of millions of dollars, educated, constantly keeping their minds and spirits sharp, business and finance savvy, superstar status, and unapologetic about it. And God forbid this gets into the MLB, could you imagine superstar black baseball players with $500M+ contracts with the mentality and social consciousness of a Jaylen Brown???? The nfl only likes to market "black pocket passing qbs" if they can run with that lazy talking point that they get their ability to read coverage from their white parent. Which is why they had to downplay the eff outta jameis winston throwing for 5k yards and only getting a 1 million dollar offer in that free-agency. The nfl never expected winston to take that 1 million dollar offer. It was basically a "hey we tried to sign him" but they never expected winston to sign for that low

Jaylen Brown have the largest contract in NBA history is good for everyone.
But don’t discredit everything that Tatum does for the team. He is not put on a pedestal because they want to keep Brown down, he earned that pedestal! There is no division between these two. They are brothers and Brown said it best, “I wish people could celebrate someone without discrediting someone else.”

@johnnywebb2351 Nahh Tatum has more talent and physical attributes. There's a reason the team is built around Tatum. Jalen Brown is very good, plays hard and gives a winning effort every night, that's mental toughness, not talented.

@johnnywebb2351 Bro, where have I implied someone was without talent. We are comparing two Allstars. One is a media darling and declared franchise talent and the other is just a Allstars Calibur player. The question is: Is the only difference political. My contention is politics is part of the coverage but not why the team views Tatum as their true franchise player.

Jaylen Brown endeared himself to me when he stood up for Kyrie Irving in that idiotic anti-Semitism affair! Appreciate your work. Mr Brown is an intelligent individual. He, like so many before him, knows his honesty will cost him endorsement $$'s, but he's not willing to sell out to be quiet. It's a major reason my favorite all time b-ball player, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is rarely mentioned in the G.O.A.T. conversation, was never considered for coaching, front office or any other serious NBA positions. We all face the same choice. Regardless of the type of $$'s you make, an individual should be able to be true to himself & speak their belief. Mr Brown is currently on my "most respected NBA player" list.
