      And now that you have it painted, how has the paint held up? I'm curious, because I would think the factory paint would be much harder to scratch and a more durable finish. Is there any quality to the new paint?

      I would hardly call it a cheap bike. Like new Lemond Zurich made of Reynolds 853 with the stock carbon fork and original headset for $275. Then added the group: FSA 10 speed compact, Record 10 speed shift group and skeleton brakes with carbon friendly pads. Chinese carbon bar, stem and 55 mm aero wheels. Aluminum seat post, Prologo saddle and 12-28 Campy cassette. Absolutely love it. The Colnago CLX 3.0 sits in the workstand except for centuries. I have about 800 miles and 40,000 feet of climbing on it in mere months.

      @@pawoo666 A buddy of mine stripped his enduro bike with dichloromethane, worked like a charm. Need to do it outside though because of nasty vapours (put some dichloromethane on a piece of shop towel, than wrap it around the frame, and then put clear film over it to stop it evaporating). After that, he lightly sanded it and applied primer and then some coats of paint, followed by a clearcoat. Good results. Now considering doing it on my enduro bike, painting it nardo gray.

    • @pawoo666

      @@oskarstaudte sorry, but I'm not f**kin with those kinds of chemicals:
      "Even though DCM is the least toxic of the simple chlorohydrocarbons, it has serious health risks. Its high volatility makes it an acute inhalation hazard. It can also be absorbed through the skin. Accidental injection of DCM from an emptied syringe caused fast tissue necrosis of a finger, requiring removal of affected tissue and skin grafting. Amputation could be avoided in this case. Updates of MSDS to warn about this danger requires controlled animal testing.
      Symptoms of acute overexposure to dichloromethane via inhalation include difficulty concentrating, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, headaches, numbness, weakness, and irritation of the upper respiratory tract and eyes. More severe consequences can include suffocation, loss of consciousness, coma, and death.
      DCM is also metabolized by the body to carbon monoxide potentially leading to carbon monoxide poisoning. Acute exposure by inhalation has resulted in optic neuropathy and hepatitis. Prolonged skin contact can result in DCM dissolving some of the fatty tissues in skin, resulting in skin irritation or chemical burns.
      It may be carcinogenic, as it has been linked to cancer of the lungs, liver, and pancreas in laboratory animals. Other animal studies showed breast cancer and salivary gland cancer. Research is not yet clear as to what levels may be carcinogenic. DCM crosses the placenta. Fetal toxicity in women who are exposed to it during pregnancy, however, has not been proven. In animal experiments, it was fetotoxic at doses that were maternally toxic but no teratogenic effects were seen.
      In people with pre-existing heart problems, exposure to DCM can cause abnormal heart rhythms and/or heart attacks, sometimes without any other symptoms of overexposure. People with existing liver, nervous system, or skin problems may worsen after exposure to methylene chloride."

      @@alicangul2603 Right I know what Lance and the team did, and it's reprehensible no doubt. But the usps had nothing to do with what they did, the usps was conned duped like the rest of us. Perhaps he should have said team usps. But whatever no biggy. Maybe I took it wrong.

    This is a great series, Jon, thanks. And what's so controversial about the United States Postal Service? It's just our post office and the letter carriers had nothing to do with all that cheatin' goin' on. And I still appreciate the USPS for sponsoring a team. Same with Radio Shack and Discovery and Motorola and 7-Eleven. And especially 7-Eleven and all those adventurous lads who weren't scared of fisticuffs with Bernard and his buds. The wonder of youth. And thanks for paying homage to Greg with your paint work. Greg will forever be the all-time greatest for lots of us on this side of the pond :)

    I can vouch for the spray.bike paint. My son Joe sprayed his bike to a fantastic finish, it was actually shown on the GCNtech show in the upgrades section recently. Sadly he was taken out a couple of weeks later and, though he was only bruised, the frame was a right off. But for a short time it looked fantastic!
    Did you spray lacquer over the paint? Without it the finish is completely matt.

      No way. If he’s building it for a “lifetime” bike, that USPS stuff has to go.

    • @dietbountyicecream1444
      @dietbountyicecream1444 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@KingVonMudder The original paint job is the soul of a bike/frame. And also by removing that you delete the unique story every frame is telling. (Espacally on older Bikes).

    • @KingVonMudder
      @KingVonMudder 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @DietBounty IceCream, I enjoy bicycle craftsmanship, tech and beauty as much as Jon or anybody else. However, respectfully, molten alloy is soulless and bikes don’t talk :)
      My own taste? ... I would’ve gone bare aluminum (satin with course steel wool) with no clear, with only paint fully around the tubes where the Trek decals go. Ugh, I say that, yet I’m faaarrrr from liking Trek as much as Cannondale.
      Edit: It’s just my own opinion as an artist that the USPS stuff HAS to go (and yes, I love Armstrong). I do see how it’d be cool as heck to keep the original paint job. I just think it’s ugly as fuuuudge. Also, I’ve never been a fan of red/white/blue, even being a proud American. Just my opinion, that’s all. Also, they should’ve used light coyote/maroon/navy blue as the stock colors... But that was before the last Batman trilogy :D
