Refutation in World Schools Debate w/ Diego Castillo

World Schools Debate is one of the most dynamic events: between 8 minute speeches and 3-person teams, it can be challenging to master details like refutation. The event demands that you win the debate beyond a reasonable doubt, requiring intuitive and analytical refutation at every layer of the round.
This lecture will help you navigate the basics and details of refutation in world schools debate. Diego will cover techniques such as argument grouping, weighing, speech structure, how to utilize evidence or examples, and strategy for the 2 and 3 speeches.
Diego Castillo is a distinguished debater, earning the 5th rank by the NSDA in World Schools Debate. His achievements include clinching the NSDA National Championship in WSD in 2021 and emerging victorious at the Greenhill Fall Classic in 2021 after consecutive final appearances. Diego also reached semifinals at prestigious events such as TFA State and the Blake Tournament in 2020, as well as the Kandi King Invitational in 2021. Notably, he advanced to the quarterfinals at European 2021, securing a top speaker award, and replicated this success at EUDC 2022. Diego has spent the last few couple summers coaching at the Space City Camp and the Houston Urban Debate League's Summer camp.
