    OK, so we'll just call them the "Pre-Expansion Six".

  • @Elayman1

    Original Six refers to the only remaining teams to have been in the NHL from 1942-1967 which is pretty damned far removed from the origination of the league.

    Call them what you want collectively but these 6 clubs where the saving grace of the league through two world wars and the great depression when every other franchise folded or moved on to another league. Without the "Original 6" the NHL would a secondary, unstable and unpopular league like MLS and because of that, the remaining 24 NHL franchises that are loved and respected by so many including my self wouldn't exist.

      You clearly missed the point of the video. The NHL IS calling these teams what it wants and what the NHL is calling them (the “original six”) is historically inaccurate and it’s ridiculous that the league markets them as such. It would be more accurate to call them the “surviving six.” It’s also a fallacy to draw the conclusion that if one or all of these teams failed as a franchise that a successful professional hockey league wouldn’t exist in America. A lot can happen over the course of 80 years.

      John DeGoey has a good point. Although those teams kept the NHL going while rival leagues started to form, they aren't the originals, except maybe Canadiens and Leafs(?). But NHL is misleading, if not outright lying by marketing them as The Original Six.

    As a basketball fan, it’s crazy to see the NHL leapfrog the NBA last year in viewership due to the rampant front office scandals helping cheating teams buy cakewalk chips! I would say well deserved as the product has diminished significantly!
    I agree that the Original 6 oversell hurts the other 26 franchises to a minimal extent. However, seeing as the NHL is now in the Big 3 of American leagues while the NBA/MLS duke it out for 4th, I’d say they’re in a much better spot today!

    PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE COMMENT, KEITH OBERMANN IN CERTAIN CONTEXT IS WRONG AND RIGHT: When I first saw this video, I was pissed. I wanted to hunt the guy down and tell him he was wrong very passionately (using words not suitable for social media), but then I became curious. To begin my search I first looked up the definition of original which means, present or existing from the beginning; first or earliest. I looked up the NHL standing of the 1917-1918 season (thanks to the information NHL.com was able to provide me with) and did find out that the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs are the only two teams from the year 1917 to the present day. That is the only thing that Keith has right in a technical sense because with the demise of the Brooklyn Americans in 1942 begins the ORIGINAL 6 ERA. Now it is true that only the two of these teams played in the year 1917, but from 1917-1926, there were the six teams that are now in the current NHL. Now going back to the second part of the definition of original, it says first or EARLIEST. And if you noticed, those other 4 teams were formed nearly less than a decade after the league was founded. And considering the fact that none of the other 25 teams were not in the NHL at the time, I would deeply consider the other 4 teams to be part of the earliest years of the NHL enough to continue considering those 6 teams the original 6. Also I would like to state that I feel so passionate about this that I will even e-mail Keith Obermann.

    the idea of the original six is that they’re the six original teams to still be in action today. if or once a team in the original six is relocated or something along those lines, they wont be an original six team anymore. either the NHL would chose the next team to be added to the league or they would just be considered the original five

    Hockey desperately needs an identity to survive. They have fallen over year after year and even added a glowing puck at one time for our viewing pleasure to get kids interested in watching games. that is the absolute wrong approach and trying to Market your sport. the only way I see hockey ever becoming a factor in sports is they need to reach out to all stars from different franchises to come and attend their games and relate with players and film that so that kids can see that hockey is just as cool as basketball and football. people cannot afford to go to games so their influence is sports media and when they see the all stars from basketball from baseball from football all hanging out with each other and doing things they want to be like them however hockey has not done that. I can understand that hockey has a special breed of players that are Foreigner and have names that people cannot identify however that being said you get them out there with sport athletes and major guys from different teams and you will see a big jump in interest in that sport.

    This is no controversy as everyone (at least in Canada) know these are not the original 6 teams that started the NHL but the 6 longest surviving teams. The real controversy is how the NHL and the Stanley Cup (a trophy donated by a Canadian politician to played by Canadian teams) ended up being controlled by wealthy Americans. American lawyers run the NHL and they have no interest in anything but US interests and money. Although hockey is like a religion in Canada the US lawyers and owners refuse to admit new Canadian teams like Quebec City, Hamilton or a second team in the GTA in favor of bringing teams to hockey hotbeds (sarcasm) like Las Vegas. Even though the 7 Canadian teams generate almost as much revenue as the 24 American ones. That's the real controversy but I wouldn't expect an American to know it. They get lost in some pointless detail I knew about at age 7.

    • @chase5833
      @chase5833 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Just gonna throw it out there even though this was posted a long way back. The 24 American teams by far bring in more money combined than the 7 Canadian teams combined. It's not even kind of close. 3 of the top 5 highest earning teams are American and 7 of the top 10 are America. The number one team is also American. Canada is definitely more fanatical about hockey but the population of Canada is 1/10 that of the US. The sheer market size of the US means more teams. 10-1 population difference but 3.5-1 team difference. The US market is far less saturated than the Canadian one so they expand into the US

    • @tommywd40
      @tommywd40 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chase you're trying to use valuation vs the revenue they provide for the league. Not at all true. Everyone damn well knows the Leafs and Canadians almost hold the league up by their own.

    • @chase5833
      @chase5833 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No....I'm not. I'm using Revenue. The Leafs and Canadians as the second and third highest earning teams are very beneficial to the league. But in both revenue and operating income the American teams earn more, in the case of revenue a hell of a lot more.

    • @tommywd40
      @tommywd40 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chase my mistake. When I said revenue they earn for the league I meant that in profit. The rangers may be the most valued but they arent the most profitable.

    • @chase5833
      @chase5833 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Operating Income subtracts costs of operating out of revenue. It is a metric for determining profit. The Rangers top that as well

    Montreal and Toronto are superior to the other teams. In fact they should be in their own two-team division. The team with the better record goes to the Stanley Cup final, the team that finishes second plays in the conference final. This leaves only four (rather than 14) more playoff spots - two for the top two remaining canadian teams, one spot for the four "original US team", and one for all the OTHERS. This will remedy all the silly expansions since 1967.

    Get your head out of your Cornhole. It's the original 6 cuz everyone calls it that. None of the other teams survived. The oldest is what we know as original 6 weather you like it or not and it's not gonna be changed cuz you know the monopoly rule book better then anyone else. If they disappeared and others came along near the beginning to make it last or work. But it actually sounds like it bothers you or your disturbed by it. Then get a box of kleenex and make sure it's the original not the new ones. Like really.... it's such an issue for you. BTW.... That's not the original Stanley Cup either.... it's gone through a few changes too. Sounds like your gonna need more kleenex now.

    Buddy as a Minnesotan who has watched hockey my whole life I can tell you that anyone who has a brain and is an actual hockey fan knows that those are not the original six teams. They are called the original six because they were the only six teams to play in the league for 25 years. They defined the history of hockey and had players like Gordie Howe, Maurice Richard, and Bobby Hull. So let us real hockey fans who understand our history and our game keep that to ourselves and stick to your basketball or baseball or whatever.

    The reason that the teams in Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Boston, New York and Montreal are called the Original Six is because by 1942 only six teams could survive selling professional hockey. First Ottawa folded, then the Montreal Maroons and upstarts in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and St Louis tried their lot at competing and surviving. When the NY/Brooklyn Americans folded 1942 there were only six teams left. For the next 25 years this primarily Northeast US and Eastern Canada based true multi national league survived playing each other 12 later 14 times a season. Six cities: Two on the Atlantic Ocean, two classic river cities and two located on a Great Lake. Olbermann wears us out with this pointless exercise in semantics. Trust me those six franchises advanced this league. While the players traveled between cities in Pullman cars there was an under belly to the product. It was not pretty. Monopolistic anti trust dodging, union busting owners, miserly curmudgeons and very cut throat. Selling hockey in the 1940's was tough, Barnum and Bailey shysters selling an evening at the arena swilling beer and puffing cigarettes. Yet the players, the coaches, the arenas and the cities turned the league into a viable entity that eventually expanded. They hardly deserve to be chided or lectured over the word "original".
