    Acupuncture -- A Critical Analysis
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16...
    "Even though widely used in today's clinical practice, acupuncture has remained a controversial subject. Many reviews are currently available but most lack a critical stance and some are overtly promotional. The aim of this overview is to provide a balanced, critical analysis of the existing evidence."
    Acupuncture: Does It Alleviate Pain And Are There Serious Risks? A Review Of Reviews
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21...
    "Acupuncture is commonly used for pain control, but doubts about its effectiveness and safety remain. This review was aimed at critically evaluating systematic reviews of acupuncture as a treatment of pain and at summarizing reports of serious adverse effects published since 2000. Literature searches were carried out in 11 databases without language restrictions. Systematic reviews were considered for the evaluation of effectiveness and case series or case reports for summarizing adverse events."
    5 Scientists Weigh In On Acupuncture

    "Millions of Americans turn to acupuncture each year to treat chronic pains and even depression. Recently, researchers at Rutgers University reported that combining the acupuncturist's needle with an electric current could yield a new treatment for severe inflammation. Yet many scientists look skeptically at the practice."

    I worked with an acupuncturist in my clinic. One day I started to get a migraine, which usually entails laying down in a dark room for 4+ hours since my vision starts to get wonky. She stuck 10+ needles in my face and in 10 minutes my migraine was completely gone. I've also been treated with herbs for chronic ovarian cyst that doctors said I'd have to treat with either hormones or surgery. After just 3 months my 6cm cysts were completely gone. There is also trouble with the "sham" needles because you are still piercing the skin, which in turn still counts regardless of how deep you go. Still a lot of work in accurately representing the medicine in research; but for a 3,000 year old medicine there has to be something going on for it to have lasted this long! It is still preferred over in China before "extreme" Western methods.

    I had my wisdom teeth removed and the "western" doctors damaged my jaw really badly in the process. I was in huge amounts of pain for 2 years, then I went to a Chinese doctor for acupuncture treatment and it's been 5 years of no pain since then. It does work and the theory behind it is simple, if something is damaged and hasn't repaired fully the needles draw more blood to that area and in turn tricks the body into thinking there's been more damage done to that area so it starts the repairing process again

    • @Skankhunt-vy7iy

Out of despair i tried acupuncture and to my amazement the pain ceased and I can walk again with the occasional minimal pain! It was a truly amazing experience. I just got back from acupuncture, I go for stress relief as well as nerve stimulation in my ears to help me recover from Otto-toxic hearing loss from chemo. I absolutely think acupuncture works, with every fiber of my being I know it works. My doctors said my hearing would never come back, but I have since gained back most of my hearing and it is because I go to acupuncture three times a week. I always sleep better after acupuncture too, and I think it also helps with my nausea. To those who think it's a scam, it's not.

I kind of feel bad for close minded people but at the same time I think you get the kind of treatment you deserve due to your closed mind. So when pain does happen to some people so will medication addiction. I really don't wish pain medication addiction on anyone. I wish you could know how well it works.

    I never believed in Acupuncture, I treated it with the same disregard as I treat homeopathy. That changed last year (the acupuncture, not the homeopathy). My dog started to get really unstable. When going on walks, her hips would give out a couple op times during the walk. It only got worse, and I thought she wouldn't make the end of the month. Then my vet told me to try acupuncture. After a couple of sessions, my dog started to get better, and now 1.5 years later, we can go on walks for 30min (a day) again. She's still a 13 year old german shepherd, and didn't change into a 5 year old dog again. But I'm really glad it worked (she's been my Guide Dog from when she was two, until she retired at 10years old, and her happiness means a lot to me). I'm still sceptical about acupuncture (that will never go away), but I can't deny the results, she doens't fall as much (almost never during walks), and that observation isn't my imagination.

    I got acupuncture treatment twice. One for nose bleeding and the other one lower back. I had nose bleeding every week, until one day my co-worker, a Mexican lady, saw me. She told me to go to her acupuncture doctor. I went there for about 3 treatments, I never had nose bleeding anymore. The other one is the lower back. I got this lower back pain was just because I was picking up a piece of paper, and suddenly I got back pain. Usually, it will be gone after several days, this one was 3 weeks and still not gone. My friend suggested me to go to the acupuncture guy who treated him. At about 1 pm (after lunch), I went there. The secretary at my office saw me leaving. It was so painful. Even getting into my car, it was like a torture. When I arrived at the acupuncture place, the guy asked me left or right. I said " I do not know, just lower back". He poked me with two needles on the top of my left hand, between pinky and ring finger. The needles stayed for 15 or 20 min. After that, he told me to stand up. I was able to stand up. When I went back to the office the secretary could not believe what she saw! I was able to walk normally.

    Acupuncture works. I was diagnosed for focal dystonia when I was 12. I had to see a neurologist once every year just to tell me they don’t know what’s wrong and there is no cure and hopefully these pills can mask the problem. I’ve been going to an acupuncturist for the past month. At first I wasn’t too convinced but after the fourth time going I truly saw the result. I no longer convulse from doing normal things like getting up from a chair or from walking. I’m 21 now. They targeted the issue rather than masking it with strong pills.

      Also, a placebo simply doesn't mean something without any effect. Placebo has much deeper meaning in modern medicine. It means something with significantly inferior effect to standard treatment.
      And as you asked "How?" Is one part which acupuncture actually is deficienct. Nobody can actually give a solid scientific plausible reason why it is effective. Only explanations in existence is some pseudoscientific explanations just like homeopaths do, which can be broken by a +2 student with proper understanding of biology.
      Second major problem is " lack of evidence". In the current era of evidence based medicine, more than 130 RCT studies has proven acupuncture has zero to negligible benefit over standard treatment. ( Only other thing to fail to gain evidence so miserably is yoga).
      And to your question, me and my friends have practiced in TN rural villages for a couple of years. They had huge deficiency of analgesic injection due to some government restriction during that time. We, on average , used to see atleast 20 back pains and hip pains. Only thing we used to give is an IV injection of 5ml normal saline (NaCl). Those patients used to have better pain relief than a proper analgesic and used to offer us fruits and vegetables from their home. Out of my two year service, only 3 or 4 patients had pain which didn't settle by normal saline injection and needed further evaluation ( one of them had spinal TB and other 2 has renal stones)
      So don't tell me placebo effect can't cure pain. I literally lived on placebo effect for 2 years!

    I do believe that acupuncture helps, but only for certain people, just like HIV medication isn't gonna cure cancer, acupuncture isn't gonna cure cancer either, but that doesn't mean it won't fix or relieve other problems. I personally hate needles, I've had a huge phobia of them for the longest time, and I believed acupuncture to be a scam as well, but due to my large plethora of health problems and lack of effective treatments, I decided I should try acupuncture. keep in mind, I never believed in it, but after getting several treatments, I do believe I am better off, it didn't cure me. But it did help, and it definitely didn't harm me. All in all, I think you just gotta find what's right for you. Even depression medication doesn't help out every depressed person. So not all tests saying that acupuncture is a scam, should be taken as fact. I hope I got my point across, sorry if I didn't make much sense.

I woke up one morning and no longer needed glasses. I used to be required to wear corrective lenses while driving, but that was taken off my license 11 years ago and I have passed the eye exam every time I renew my license. I am sure many will not believe me, but I truly love being pain free and not having to wear glasses for the last 11 years.

    Totally works. Not placebo although it may have placebo effects. When the needle hits the points, it creates sensations such as soreness, aching, numbness, distension, tightness, twitching, radiation, crawling, even internal organ movements. I am an acupuncturist and I have witnessed miracles of acupuncture on others and myself. Often if it is done right, you can see result right away as soon as the needle hits the jackpot. Diseases can happen at all levels: physical, energetic, emotional, and karmic. Acupuncture deals with illness at all levels, but best at energetic and emotional levels.

    Okay although I personally think the science of acupuncture needs to be further studied, a very likely reason that results from Asia were significantly different from other places is that in Asia acupuncture must be carried out be physicians with certified Chinese medicine license similar to that of western medicine (it's pretty hard to get). Most acupuncture researches and knowledge still remain in Chinese and Chinese only, and it's not as simple as putting needles somewhere on a person as depicted in Kung Fu Panda, although I've seen people do that a lot outside Asia. Same goes with cupping. You can't just cup anywhere and expect a result.

    People can say whatever they want, but I've had chronic knee pain since my knee cap was split in half due to a car hitting me. After 5 years of recovery, and trying many treatments, I turned to acupuncture. I was skeptical, but I finally tried it since my wife is Chinese and said give it a shot. It has seriously helped me, A LOT. It's not just the needles, but my acupuncturist hooks up electricity waves to each needles and pumps that for 25 min into my knee. My knee has never been better. I'm a 32 year old man who does intense sports or weightlifting every day, so I know my bad knee after 5 years, and with the right treatment I can see a major difference. After sports I'd be limping for 24-48 hours, but with this treatment I'm so much better and almost no pain when doing sports. How can a fake treatment make that happen for me? It's not a mental thing, the pain is either there and intense, or it's not there (after acupuncture).

    imo alternative medicine doesn't really NEED to be scientifically proven, if it's harmless and it makes people feel better, safer and cope then i don't see a problem with it. You need to do what's useful FOR YOU personally, even if it's just a placebo effect or something, if it makes you feel better, it makes you feel better and that's all that matters.

    • @ashleyashleym2969
      @ashleyashleym2969 7 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      It's not harmless, when people choose alternative medicine and then refuse actual medicine, it's incredibly harmful and has the potential to kill. I mean if people do it in conjunction with real medicine then ok, but if they don't, then they're killing themselves (assuming their aliment is serious). And if children are involved it's considered neglect. And just because you feel better, doesn't mean you are better, especially with serious conditions, so no feeling better is not all that matters unless the condition is benign.

      However, i feel everyone's free to get their illnesses treated however they please... i even think people is free to decide not to be treated, it can be a valid choice (unless it's a contagious illness). in the case of children it's different because they're not choosing by themselves and they don't have the means to make an informed choice so yeah, you need to be responsible when choosing what to do with your children.

    It would be interested to see if some of the negative research you mentioned was paid for by big pharmaceutical companies, also worth considering is "sham" acupuncture (an acupuncture point that is not needled correctly or a needle that misses the point by several millimetres) can still have a therapeutic effect.
    It is worth noting that The World Health Organisation includes acupuncture in its list of accepted therapies for a wide range of conditions.

    Well, speaking from a Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner point of view.
    - People refer to acupuncture, most of the time, it's referring to an act of sticking acupuncture needle on the body, without proper Chinese Medicine diagnosis nor manipulation. ( same as if someone suffering from back pain and having a surgery without surgery indication)
    - The acupuncturist is the main factor which determines whether if it's going to be a benefit for the condition or not. ( Same as there're some doctors see a headache as a symptom, the other doctors see the same headache as part of the disorder instead of just a single problem. PS, according to CBS News, each year there are 12 MILLIONS of Americans are misdiagnosed)
    - Chinese Medicine training and education are totally different in Asia than in the North America. This could be true if there's only 53% of research done in America indicate that Acupuncture work positively, because of the training and the way that doctors practice acupuncture in China are more professional and authentic. Just a simple fact that when I used to work in GuangZhou China, we used acupuncture as part of the medical system to correct the pathogenic disorder, in comparison in the west, most of the TCM practitioners are focus on building their business and how NOT to poke a person without pain, and hope it works.
    Hope this would help to clear up some general misconceptions.
    Cheers,

      i have a question for you- is it recommended for children to receive acupuncture at as young as 6 years old (or maybe even younger)? i have this idea in my mind - but know i am not medically trained whatsoever- that childrens' nerves are not fully feveloped so poking them would lead to possible tiny scar tissue, thus blocking full sensation later down the road. could you answer this for me?

Sometimes his limbs move on their own while other times he's able to actually control them and move them. While I don't know if the acupuncture has much effect on his recovery, I do know that acupuncture has some effect on the body.

    My grandmother has a phd in acupuncture, and while she's my grandmother, and I may be biased, I believe the study of acupuncture has changed a lot. She has massive charts that show acupuncture points along the body, and while she hasn't really explained much regarding what it's "supposed to do" I believe it's along the lines of muscle relaxing. Also, Chinese medicine has a lot of other aspects to it, like cupping. Really, from what I gather it's no longer something that should be considered a "treatment", but rather an alternative to massages and other muscle relaxants. Even if it placebo, most of the treatments are extremely benign so I see no reason to care if people spend their money on it.
    My grandmother makes a SHIT ton of cash from it, and these people are usually upper middle class bourgeois that are willing to pay thousands to tell all their friends they use "alternative" medicines.

Massage also has no medical benefits, but it feels great and it helps you relax because it feels great. Not sure how people would find acupuncture relaxing but if they do, I don't have a problem with that.

      I find it weird and slightly offencive that you won't classify messages as a medical treatment, despite attesting to its relaxing qualities and the fact that it makes you 'feel great'. A massage is meant to help someone feel better, its meant to relax muscle tension, relieve stress. It actively does its job. If you have a sprained ankle and a massage helps treat it, I think it qualifies as a medical treatment.
      It's not meant to treat a bullet wound, fight attacks from micro-organisms, or remove kidney stones you know.

    From what I've seen, acupuncture works for those who already believe it will work, or at least believe it has a chance of working. I.E. Placebo effect. That being said, with so many studies and none of them showing any _negative_ side-effects of acupuncture my opinion is: what's the harm? If it works for some people and they're not hurting anyone else, let them have at it.
    That being said, there's still a small possibility that there's something neurological going on that we can't quite pin down. I've always interpreted the old "qi" idea as an insightful, albeit rudimentary, understanding of the bio-electric systems of the body.

    How do you do like a zillion studies to find out if something works, and still not know if it works or not?

    • @mishah6425
      @mishah6425 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because acupuncture turned out to be very hard to double blind. Once they developed a needle where neither the person poking or the person being poked couldn't tell if the needle was actually piercing the skin, and going beyond that and then the person being poked not even knowing if the person doing the poking is a "trained acupuncturist" or just a guy off the street given 2 minutes of instruction, what was found was there was no difference between any combination of trials piercing skin vs. not piercing skin, acupuncturist vs. guy off the street and so on.
      Then secondly... most of what is collected as data is simply asking a person "do you feel better".. this is such a subjective BS metric that it's effectually useless. Just the act of putting someone in a relaxing environment is going to make a person "feel better"... even if you don't do anything else to them. There's no easy quantifiable way to measure if a person actually "feels better".
      The most robust studies using this double blinded technique clearly showed that there was no difference between piercing the skin and just poking it. That shows clearly that it does not work.
      The most laughable thing I have ever heard is acupuncturist saying to this is "acupuncture is so powerful that the placebo of acupuncture still works." If it doesn't work beyond the placebo effect... you're just wasting your money on something that has no "real" clinical effect.
      Just do anything that relaxes you and you'll get the same placebo effect.

    • @ShawnRavenfire
      @ShawnRavenfire 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Misha H True, but then how do we test any pain treatments? All pain medication is tested by asking if a person "feels better," because there's no scientific way (as far as I know) to measure pain.

    • @mishah6425
      @mishah6425 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's why you can see a million studies and there still be debate about if something "works" or not. That was your original question. Any testing that at the end of the day simply asks a person "do you feel better" and they are simply self reporting the data.. is problematic. It's so subjective.. and you ahve people who might report they feel better.. just because they feel that their is pressure to say that they feel better.
      Penn and Teller did a BS episode where they whole cloth made up a "sonic" treatment where they made people believe that some researchers were doing a study on a new treatment for aches and pains. They had the people come into a clinical setting.. had them lay down on a table and then had someone (just a member of their production team who they put a white lab coat on) take a tuning fork and simply move it up and down over top of their bodies (not making any contact). Then after a few minutes of total made up sham "treatment", they asked the person how they felt.
      Wanna bet on what the outcome was? Most reported that they actually "felt better". Ok.. it's just one experiment to show the problem of "self reporting" something as loosie goosie as "feeling better", and the sample size might have been small. But it's pretty compelling evidence that if the criteria of the outcome of a study is to simply ask "do you feel better".. any positive results are dubious at best.
      So if a totally made up on the spot "sham" treatment can show a "positive" result when simply asking people "do you feel better"... why should one not be extra skeptical of any claims of any other type of treatment that rests on those same type of self reported results of such a subjective measure as "do you feel better" done through poor studies (low sample size, not double blinded, no control group, etc)?
      Taken as a whole, the pattern of the acupuncture literature follows one with which scientists are very familiar: the more tightly controlled the study the smaller the effect, and the best-controlled trials are negative. This pattern is highly predictive of a null-effect - that there is no actual effect from acupuncture.
