@@TheRetroFuture I remember my N64 controller got all "grindey" with the analogue stick, so I had the genius idea of spraying ED40 into the hole, completley killed it (so bought another from Electronics Bouique and swapped them over >:D)
One of my sister's boyfriends in the mid 90's worked at a Jewelry and pawn shop his mother owned here in the US, so I would go by it from time to time to see what they got in stock in the back room, and honestly some of the NES systems they got in had SODA, Kool-aid, and GOD only knows what else spilled all over them. So yeah with kids, and parents who don't give 2 fracks you never know what can happen. Honestly though if I had those colored buttons for my NES controllers back in the day my friends would have been like RAD Man!
I actually quite like the result of differently colored buttons! It's not the most tasteful choice of color but I love tiny bits of personalization that makes stuff stand out like that.
Back in the day having those colors on anything as a boy was considered Totally Rad, and cool to the MAX!! I had a BMX bike with those colors as a kid lol!
I still have one of these, never used the buttons but the membranes were definitely used a long time ago. I still use the case for parts for all my systems.
They also made 3rd party battery packs as well for the GB, and I had one for my Game Gear, and it worked really well considering the battery tech at the time.
I liked the button colours, I thought it was going to look awful but it was alright! Neon pink A & B buttons would have been better though! I'd also forgotten how insanely long the old NES controller cables were so thanks for that jog down memory lane! :)
I already taken apart an NES controller, it gave pretty much the same result but I was pretty surprised that the inside was not broken or dirty at all. Even NONE of the button membranes are broken! Unfortunately I didn't have the console itself to test it...
I modded a DMG and installed the buttons from and NES controller cuz I prefer the feel of them. And put the Gameboy buttons into the NES controller. The controller actually doesn’t look too bad with the Gameboy buttons.
Nice video as always ! Just wanted to point out that the black stuff that accumulated on the q tip when you scrubbed the PCB is not dirt it is carbon and it is part of the contact itself and you don't want to remove too much of it or you might ruin the controller !
@@bland9876 there is carbon on both the PCB and the button contact to make a button press, if you remove one side of the carbon then there will be no contact anymore
Out of curiosity, what is the most difficult repair you've ever done? Mine was the ps1 controller ports. I had to bypass a broken fuse by soldering two wires to either side so i could connect a new fuse to the motherboard.
It's just peroxide that people use to bleach their hair, "retro bright" is the name that hobbyists came up with for the process. If you don't have a UV light source, you can leave them on the sun (takes longer though).
Yeah, but it was a lot cheaper than inventing, designing and building a time machine to just to buy £2 worth of parts from a website that wouldn't exist for another 22 years.
Talonfluff I managed to make one using a cheap usb nes controller and a mega drive controller extension cable. Got a pinout online and soldered the wires on, it works great
I feel the target market for this thing I imagine they’d already know how to restore an NES controller and have no need interest in this thing. Great video though.
We use the same techniques when restrain plastics but with slightly different methods. I've never heard of a UV nail hardener but it appears to be much faster than my process. Thanks for sharing! If you feel so inclined check out my restoration guide here: www.ifixit.com/Guide/Sega+Dreamcast+Controller+Restoration/75033
When those membranes are worn out, the carbon contacts are gone. You cannot clean them and expect them to work again. Take a look at old computer keyboards. I disagree with your statement.
Usually with the game pads, they wouldn't be worn out, but rather, it would catch a lot of derbis/ gunk etc. and they would work easily after cleaning them/ rubbing the contacts' on some paper. Quite impressive for them, especially when they're 25+ years old!
You got to question what the people who needed this back in 1990 were doing with their controllers
Looking at the state of this one, I don't want to know 😂
They were easier to find back then, so we just bought new ones.
Chewing on the d-pad

I just bought 2 broken DS and am attempting to fix them thank you for the inspiration Elliot!!

The DOC's company also made a stereo speaker attachment for the original Gameboy, Ashens reviewed it on one of the Gameboy extravaganzas's he made!
They also made 3rd party battery packs as well for the GB, and I had one for my Game Gear, and it worked really well considering the battery tech at the time.
A collector friend of mine has a few NES controllers with these orange and yellow buttons, and now I know where they came from! :)
I bought a controller with these buttons off eBay a few years ago. It all makes sense now. Haha
DUDE!! I used this when it was new in the late 80's early 90's. From what I remember It worked fairly well.
Good stuff!
I liked the button colours, I thought it was going to look awful but it was alright! Neon pink A & B buttons would have been better though! I'd also forgotten how insanely long the old NES controller cables were so thanks for that jog down memory lane! :)
I used to have a kit like that back in the day. We never used the buttons because we didn't like the colors, but the membranes were nice.
I'd imagine back in the day it was probably a lot less important to keep things looking original so the different color buttons looked cool.
Very true!
I guess they just added the different colors for style or just to change it up a little
I actually have a controller I got second hand with the orange pad and yellow buttons, it's cool to finally learn why they're like that!
I already taken apart an NES controller, it gave pretty much the same result but I was pretty surprised that the inside was not broken or dirty at all. Even NONE of the button membranes are broken! Unfortunately I didn't have the console itself to test it...
I feel like the alternate coloring was a way for them to offer it as a replacement as well as a customization option.
I modded a DMG and installed the buttons from and NES controller cuz I prefer the feel of them.
And put the Gameboy buttons into the NES controller.
The controller actually doesn’t look too bad with the Gameboy buttons.
Yes i agree, those red concave buttons feel amazing on the gameboy.
I like the colors tbh
"Nintendo is licenced by Nintendo"
That's a good start for this product XD
Haha yup!
Now it looks like a Mad Catz controller, lol.
Good video. I do love me some tech vids.
the neon burrons would have been an amazing touch with the nintendo power overlay decals!
Indeed!
Nice video as always ! Just wanted to point out that the black stuff that accumulated on the q tip when you scrubbed the PCB is not dirt it is carbon and it is part of the contact itself and you don't want to remove too much of it or you might ruin the controller !
It is the stuff from the rubber membrane rubbing against the contact all those years so yes you do want to remove it
@@bland9876 there is carbon on both the PCB and the button contact to make a button press, if you remove one side of the carbon then there will be no contact anymore
You should paint the controller Florence blue or pink and put it under a black light.i think that's what was popular in the 90's.
Right into the content, no filler all killer. Great video keep it up!
would work well if the controller case was painted a neon blue
did you know you can get the same peroxide from home bargains for about a quid?
Elliot much better the new colors than the original retro, like the orange and yellow buttons.
Would a ziplock bag perhaps work in place of cling wrap?
🎵Mr sheen shines umpteen things clean🎵
Yup!
Yep have controller s of those colors
Have you got a NES to try it on?
imagine finding a controller for sale in the wild with these button replacements
Love the new outro
It looks like the yellow case it comes in is one of those NES cartridge cases.
Hey Elliot im going to fix a Sony Walkman WM-F1 Soon Wish me luck!
Out of curiosity, what is the most difficult repair you've ever done? Mine was the ps1 controller ports. I had to bypass a broken fuse by soldering two wires to either side so i could connect a new fuse to the motherboard.
The case this came in is the same one that rental stores used for NES games. :D
I hope to geo to PlayExpo next year as I only live in Stoke-On-Trent and wasn't aware of this event :(
I bought a D-pad membrane from Aliexpress, but the controller went from squishy to like pushing down on a car tyre.
Frequently better to try and clean the pads instead of replace unless they're torn
I seen that Mega CD console in Manchester yesterday
do the a/b button glow in the dark?
Good video, Elliot!
Exuse me kind sir I have a gameboy advance sp ags 101 that refuses to charge any advice on what I should do?
I like to ask you two questions? One is do you do stuff based with the Nintendo switch and to what is your favourite game to play on any console
Why you dont try retrobrite sumergion method like the 8Bitguy?
Tried and true!
when retro brighting do you have to have a uv nail hardener, do you have a link to the one you have?
The sun provides a good source of UV, just stick it outside. Works faster too. Be sure to rotate every once and awhile.
@@finnwheetley7353 thanks,
Maybe they changed the color of the buttons to stay away from copyright issues!
I absolutely love neon everything, but they do NOT go with that controller, hahaha
Does it work better?
I'm pretty sure this is the company that made those wireless n64 controllers from back in the day.
Dude that looks sick! With one of those stickers like the one avgn has on his controller, that would be cool lol
YES!
Loved it!
Yaay new video
where do i get retro bright i cant find it anywhere?

£15 for bits you cant get for £2 (in correct colours) on Ali/eBay!
Yeah, but it was a lot cheaper than inventing, designing and building a time machine to just to buy £2 worth of parts from a website that wouldn't exist for another 22 years.
this video will make his money back and then some
Hey Elliot! Amazing video as always, but I've been wondering for a while as to which screwdriver toolkit you use.
Looks like a usb battery i own
Old intro > new outro
It isn’t a true Retro Future video unless Elliott says “Bits and Bobs”.
Hahah
is this the best way to retrobright?
does it have for sega mega drive?
God damn I love your videos man
What happened to the badass musical intro?
What's up with the sound?
Is that a kit that came out in the 90’s??
Yup!
The Retro Future that’s awesome!
who needs that just go and buy some rice 👌👌👌
Right!
Maybe cause of the copyright laws the colors are different
I have 2 docs fix a system pluses
Nice
If I got this kit I would have left the original buttons in and put the new rubber contacts in.
Vegito Charmara better than being ripped tho
if there was a mastersystem pad repair kit
Talonfluff I managed to make one using a cheap usb nes controller and a mega drive controller extension cable.
Got a pinout online and soldered the wires on, it works great
Elliot no
Put those normal buttons back in there now
Hahaha
Doesn't look bad IMO
I feel the target market for this thing I imagine they’d already know how to restore an NES controller and have no need interest in this thing.

I actually do like the orange d-pad (but then again I am an orange nut!) buttons are fugly
I'd put the originals back in
Not sure if the instructions were necessary...

i have the controller style in the thumbnail. 2 of them
PLEASE RETURN THE NORMAL BUTTONS
I DO NOT RECCOMEND SINS
Obviously those buttons in the Docs kit just faded REALLY badly. Right?

ew, at least it works :)
