I got mine a couple months ago and it’s awesome. My introduction to the carnivorous plant community. It’s still going strong. My pings are still alive and looking great!
I cannot wait for you guys to bring this kit back. I missed out on the first time due to moving around but now, I have the perfect place to grow pings on my windowsill again.
What a wonderful product and project to take cp lovers to the next level! Good luck with the launching of this, it should be very popular! Always nice to see other people from behind the scenes. Hi, Allison!
So great to see Alison in a Cal Carns video! Hi Alison!!! :) Thanks for answering all of my emails! :) Love this new kit! What a great idea! It ROCKS!!! ❤❤❤
I do art & have modeling spoons and ball end tools that would be perfect for taking the individual plants apart without harming them, especial the small curve spoons. Damon said, "Nature kind of has things in odd numbers often." Moment later, "Nature usually has more of one thing." I'm a retired bio/engineer and most molecules in your body are righthanded or lefthanded and mostly lefthanded amino acids and out of over 80 of them only 20 to 22 amino acids are used in Life processes. All the proteins in your body are lefthanded.
Hello. Just watched your video. I'm in England. Can you tell me the light I should buy please? I have to grow them indoors. And I was wondering if your saucer has hole as I couldn't see it. Thanks
@@California_Carnivores thanks for replying. I will try another brand as I can't find these here and I want table one. For my Venus fly trap too. I'm new in it, hope it works.
Hi Damon and Allison. I'm a newbie and currently shopping for pings, when I came across this video. I love your pacific demeanor (looked that up in the thesaurus under "calm" and "pacific" was one of the suggestions😊) and will order from you very soon. Thank you for this informative tutorial.
Nice video! I have several pings, but many of them are quite young. I'll do some leaf pullings in spring and then try myself. I like seeing all the photos by other people who make those great pings displays on lava rocks. I would be thrilled to have Pinguicula moctezumae flowering on rock... 😍 Can this species be propagated by leaf pullings as well?
It may surprise you and pop up on its own from spores hidden in the soil or with the Pings, just make sure to mist it all and it may happen! Otherwise you may have to get a little plug of moss and introduce it!
Can you provide a link to the recommended grow lights you mentioned in this video? I can’t seem to find them You guys are amazing thank you so much for all the educational videos! ❤
Very nice! Do we need to be careful about what kinds of rocks we use, due to possible minerals leeching from it? We have some beautiful Druzy Quartz on our property, but I believe there are some pretty heavy minerals that are part of it. Thank you!
We generally use pumice or lava rock and if you want to try another type it’s a good idea to soak it or rinse it really well. But if it’s known to be quite mineraly, I would avoid that particular stone!
It’s usually too hot outside for them, unless you live in coastal Southern California, it can be tough to find the perfect mild climate for them. Many people do find that balance but it’s delicate and very easy to cook your plants unfortunately
Where can we purchase one of those rocks? I have been trying to locate a place that sells good rocks that are water observant and have been unsuccessful. I have seen some images of large rocks with plants and I really want to try and do one. I was on your website, and it says your sold out. What kind of rocks are good? I see you are using lava rocks, do large pumice rocks work too?
Lava or pumice will work! These kits sell fast for us so we don’t always have them in stock. We source them locally from landscape companies but they are hard to find overall. Sometimes you can find them at aquarium stores
We’ve never tried bonsai fertilizer. The cactus fertilizer is very low 1-1-2 so I would dilute the bonsai fertilizer and experiment with it on just one or two plants for a month.
Thank you! We keep adding them back and they keep selling out! You can sign up for a back in stock notification on our website under the product listing!
The first time I watched this video, I was waiting for my pinguicula rock kit to arrive and hadn't had a pinguicula before... needless to say 10:00 scared me a bit! All is well though, so far... 😂
Do you think flytraps could live alongside the pings in this type of setup? I have a medium sized glass terrarium with an open top I really want to use for the pings, but it would be cool to add other plants too! I’ve got 2 traps looking for a permanent home lol
We don’t use PAR readings, we’ve always just watched the plants to see how they react to each light as all the lights are so, so different now. Commercial grow lights can be quite intense so I would grow them far from the lights to start and see how they color up. Moving them closer as needed.
They generally don’t, they flower quite profusely and as long as they have lots of sun and water, they’re happy! You can also mist them with Schultz cactus fertilizer to give them a burst of nutrition too!
They can grow for many years, they do have natural cycles so it’s a good idea to take leaf pullings to keep your plants propagated and in your collection though because they can die after a few years.
Would you be adding pinguicula x Naiad into your California carnivores website or is it no longer being sold on your website permanently because I can't find it on your website no more
i killed 2 cephalotus and a pinguicula with my yescom 225, way too much light! at what distance of those yescom you suggest me to put them? mine was about a foot from the pannel with my drosera...look like it was too much light! at first, the ceph turned purple and accelerated groth and pings accelerated groth too, but about 2 weeks to a month after, they started to die off!!! as they looked like they loved the yescom, i tought it was watering issue, but they died... looking back, they were happy with my watering before i buy yescom and died not long after beiing under those, so im pretty sure i cooked them with yescom...my droseras freaking love them at that distance and i have them for my nepenthes too! but they are further from my neph, still too close tough lol! got a mirabilis x raflesiana that his leaf are dark purple, but still healty...
I’m sorry to hear that! We use Yescoms and grow all sorts of different plants underneath them at about 12-18” away from the light on a 10-12 hour daylength
Guys ı need help ı have a baby Venus flytrap that gives 5 New leaves and traps ı want to help him should ı feed him to boost his energy ? Or is it a bad idea because ı think New leaves gonna grow more slowly because of the digestion of the bug
Love the videos, but you guys put out enough videos that you need mics at this point. Your intro music is like 10x louder than the audio of the video. Wish I knew what type of mic you need, but AV isn't my area of expertise. Maybe try some clip-on lapel mics or shotgun mics?
I’d love to get any advice on mics! I’ve now tried four different ones and they’ve all died within a few uses. I don’t know if it’s the humidity in the nursery or just us?! I know we do need to improve our sound, video, editing quality but it’s totally something I’m learning on the fly in between planting things so I appreciate any advice! 😃
You should bring this kit back.
We’ve been out of stock of the pings but we’re working on it!

Excellent tutorial.
Got my first sundew a few months ago and was trying to find a good way to display them this is perfect 🌱
i just did a ping terrarium and I am going to try this soon since my tertium is going really well thanks for the build vid =]
Rinsing out the media also is key, I had a reading of 200 once when testing the runoff. I would also recommend pumice instead of perlite for the kit

It can be a little tricky to do but it can be done!

The original Yescom panels we love seem to be hard to find now but something like this should work well!
a.co/d/ghQYnhe
I posted mine on insta and tagged you, gorgeous project always in the works making tweaks here and there
Love this! Could i use some hole-y wood for this instead of a rock?
Wood is tough because it breaks down over time and that can negatively impact the pings unfortunately
Wanted this but was sold out, can’t wait for my ping window sill kit and 6 plant beginners bog kit!
A small rock mixed with the king window sill kit would be an awesome product!

Can you make these with like a pool of water at the bottom? Or is that not recommended
That would be too much water. Many of these pings go into a winter succulent phase and need to be more dried out during this time
Is that pumice rock or lava rock? Just wondering.
It’s a lava rock but pumice works as well
Can you keep them outside for the summer and inside for the winter? Full sun outdoors or part sun/part shade?
It’s usually too hot outside for them, unless you live in coastal Southern California, it can be tough to find the perfect mild climate for them. Many people do find that balance but it’s delicate and very easy to cook your plants unfortunately
