Die Hard with a Vengeance was underappreciated when it was released. I recall it coming and going in the theaters without much fanfare. But over time, it has been reappraised and gained a reputation as a fantastic action movie. The original is still a classic and the best in the series, but Die Hard 3 is a thrilling ride in its own right. It takes the Die Hard formula and expands it, turning all of New York City into a chaotic playground. And the pacing is full throttle and almost never lets up.
"What is Germany if not the West" - this movie was made/released and is set in the mid-90s, only a few years after the reunification of Germany and end of the Cold War. The Germans in this film were East German veterans of the NVA, so they had been Soviet-aligned prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union. The USA, UK, and France supported and protected West Germany, whereas the USSR supported and "protected" East Germany (ie, controlled it as a puppet state). Whereas today China is the biggest player in the global East, with Russia being a secondary power despite its overall belligerence and delusions of grandeur, at this time China was the minor power and the USSR had been the supreme "Eastern" power. The capitalist, democratic mostly-western nations (the "First World") were in ideological conflict with the communist, authoritarian mostly-eastern nations (the "Second World"), and often jockeyed for influence and control over the developing, less-wealthy, mostly-southern nations (the "Third World"). When the USSR collapsed, there was no real counterbalance or realistic opposition to western (ie, American) hegemony. That's what Jeremy Irons' character was referring to.

die hard 3 is my absolutely favorite. of course the original is a perfect movie too but die hard 3 is hilarious and endlessly quotable. maybe also the best "part 3" of any trilogy.

If you ever watch the fourth one, try to find the unrated edition. Hollywood tried to censor John McClane, and make a pg-13 Die Hard, and it’s just not as good. I prefer my Bruce Willis unfiltered. Also don’t bother with the fifth one

This is hands down my second favorite one next to the first because it connects to the events of it. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson’s chemistry is off the charts in this movie. Die Hard 4 is really worth watching

Back in the good old days, every stunt in action movies was practical. They would build full size sets, that replicated the actual real life place, and used real explosives. Everything would be rehearsed. Cameras on tracks, every shot story boarded, multiple camera shooting at high speed. They'd rehearse the scene many times and then go hot. After Oklahoma City Bombing major regulations got put in place on explosives, even though Timothy Mcveigh used fertilizer. Now it's illegal to even make a sparkler.
Up until 1990 there was both a West and East Germany, with East Germany being occupied by the Soviets, and the dividing line being the infamous "Berlin wall". There were those who still held those eastern philosophies for years after the official dissolution of the Soviet Union, though most today would indeed consider Germany to be a western country.
