    Fantastic! The badly maintained boiler leaks steam in many places and the crew of four locomotive men in a small, slow loco! (Normal crew in Europe is two; in some cases there has been the third man helping the fireman).
    The third and fourth wagons are from Switzerland, by the way.

    Best steam video I've seen. No narration needed, just see and hear those guys doing their cold, grimy job. Notice the security police minders in the cab, regular workers would not be alone with foreigners. Was coal always so gooey looking? By the way, the East Germans used steam engines built in the 1920s right up until reunification in 1989.

    @YaoiMastah Yea the DPRK doesnt seem to supply their trains with good quality coal. The better quality goes to their power stations and to their cities for heating. In some cases the trains are fired up with old truck tires. But in this video the fuel seems to be coal rests and dust.

    • @micklatham8494
      @micklatham8494 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it is the compressor, it's odd that it's running for so long. Usually the compressor would only run for a short time after releasing the train brakes or using the independent brake in order to recharge the main reservoir(s). The fact that it's running constantly indicates that there's a bad leak in the train pipe or MR somewhere, which is hardly surprising.

    • @damianstellabott3613
      @damianstellabott3613 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@micklatham8494 Steam powered compressors have governors designed to emit a small amount of steam even when they are not running. This is to prevent condensation which washes away oil and is non compressible. So the constant leak from a blown compressor packing makes sense.

    Can we just enjoy the fact that they are prepared to allow steam engines to operate on their modern railway system. None of the steam leaks I see are dangerous, leaking valves that need reseating, replacing a few olives and tightening the nuts down plus some repacking of a piston on the air pump, not a big deal. Their railway is not run for corporate profit so why does it matter how many people are operating the locomotive, take into consideration the rarity of such steam operated movements and the need to train new operators again I don't see anything excessive.

      1. It's NOT a modern railway.
      2. Unless it has a stoker you need 2 men to fire a coal burning locomotive of that size.
      3. Any steam leak is dangerous, steam at working pressure is hot enough to boil your skin off & still be invisible esp in a warm environment.

    Oh wow, this is such a neat video! :D I would love to ride this train
    Although it does seem like it use a bit of repairing
    Anyhow how did you get to ride in the cab? Tell me your secrets, and I might just go and replicate them one day :D Since getting to ride a North Korean train in its cabin, that would be reaaallyyy fucking cool

      She most likely is Chinese and snuck across the border and he probably knows Korean as well
      Another commenter said that apparently this train was being taken to be scrapped in China although I doubt the validity of that story considering that there is only one connecting Railroad with China and that is in a big Chinese Border City and I doubt that they would let the Chinese civilians CA Soviet locomotive from the 1960s also the train had several carts for passengers attached and the North Koreans would not get rid of those also I have seen several of these trains in the footage of North Korea
      Most likely this person just snuck into North Korea and they speak Korean managed to not arouse any suspicions and while the train was at a station asked ticket on for some filming or some thing like that but I doubt that the train was being scrapped and sent to China

    Say what you will and socialism, this-that-or the other, the fact is that this steam locomotive is, considering the conditions, a well-maintained piece of machinery in a rough environment. It may not meet standards in this country or that country, but that's beyond the point. For what it is, this is a beautiful machine, and I wish I could be at the throttle of this well-kept little Mike

      +Steven Holden Well maintained? All those steam leaks in the cab indicate getting minimal maintenance. The longer the steam leaks, the greater the damage it does.

      Didn't happen on a steam loco I worked on. A steam leak in the cab is not something to put up with. And FRA inspector could put a loco out of service for those kind of leaks.
      By the way, steam will cut an ever larger opening if it isn't taken care of. Even to the point of cutting a valve stem off. Or cutting a copper o-ring seal on a steam dome or the flange. And you don't want to have to resurface the dome flange as it requires also removing the studs.

      There is no way I would say that it is well maintained. Leaks in the steam lines to the glass is dangerous. With a leak in the steam side of the glass, the glass will show a false high water level leading to the possibility that the water level can get too low but still have water in the glass. Leaks around the boiler, sight glass and the lack of lubrication makes one wonder what is wrong with what can't be seen.
