- How much of the ocean have we explored to date?
It is often said that as of 2022, 20% of the ocean has been explored. But is that true?

First question I asked when you said 20% is “how do we even know what 100% is?” So I’m glad you brought that up
The megalodon does exist, it just mastered the ability of standing so incredibly still that It has become invisible to the eye...
Megalodon starts eating chips slowly

It would cost so much money to do a 100% exploration of the whole ocean from mapping, chemical testing, documentation of all life, etc. Plus there are certain areas of the ocean we cannot go in as it would create board conflicts.
Yeah, it would take a lot of money and a lot of time! That's the beauty of modelling. But there is still so much we actually don't know about everything in the ocean. Still a long way to go until we really understand how marine systems work.
I agree we do need to explore it more. But people don't seem to care about those things. I think it would be more helpful to know about the world we live on and the ocean. Nowadays things like the new iPhone, faster downloads, tik-tok, and all the other dumb things. Science is amazing and we need to commit more money and resources to it. They may find a new drug to cure cancer, heart disease, etc.
If we all just stopped developing new ways to fuck each other over, we would have more resources to learning and understanding the world.
@@jet-blackjo2455 but unfortunately we are creatures of habit and it is in our nature to screw each other over. There is so much that is kept undercover from the regular people. Those who have money and power control the world. Things are going to continue to get worst for the regular folks.

Great topic, great video.
Glad you enjoyed it! =)
That video was so informative and fun to watch! Some great insights in there. Straight to the point and packed with some new things to think about. Thank you!!
Love the intro and love this video! Very interesting questions to ask ourselves.... I think i would personally use a parameter such as ecosystems; When we know what type of ecosystem there is in a location and roughly what organisms of each clade live there, i would consider it explored. I think XD
So… It would be more correct to say that 20% of the ocean seafloor has been (somewhat) explored to a degree, not the ocean itself.
That’s the problem with a big, dynamic system - since it’s hard to draw sharply defined borders between different parts of it (and map the interaction of those parts), it’s hard to say how much of it is known.
Yes, I agree with all that. I think in the end we can just try to quantify how much we know of each specific parameter, but sometimes even that is difficult since we don't know what we don't know xD
This was super informative! Great video :)
I still wanna see more research done on colossal squids. Love a good cephalopod 😌
The ocean is a volume, like space, and exploring every cubic metre of it would be an impossible task. Instead, I consider exploration of the ocean to be more like seeking out interesting objects, creatures and locations within it and learning about those. Mapping the ocean floor is very important but I don't really see that as exploring the ocean itself. Did you hear about them discovering Shackleton's sunken ship "Endurance"? It has been preserved remarkably well for a wooden ship. The pictures are amazing.
Both a great video and a great topic!
Ideally it would be a balance between what we do know about the ocean vs what we still do not know. But that is impossible to quantify because you would need to know exactly how much you still don't know...
Beside this, as you mentioned, a lot of this research deals with ever changing conditions, so this research (like my work in freshwater research) would be a continues process. For instance even if we knew every species that lives in the ocean, you still need ongoing research to monitor thing like population, biodiversitiy and migration.
On a side note I really like your (ocean inspired) accessories!
I think quantifying the percentage of something as complex as "the ocean", might just be impossible. We might be able to quantify things like % of classified species, or % of filtered water, which are in itself quantities of something. I don't know how one would quantify studied interactions for example. It probably also doesn't really matter, but us scientists always like to quantify as much as we can xD
Thanks for the comment on the accessories :D
I absolutely love the way you present information, your articulation, and your passion for the sea. This made me think about the ocean, science, and research in ways I hadn't before (such as samples on different days are a complete water change.) As to what I would consider as 'explored': I would say area high res mapped, all common flora and fauna logged leaving room of course for the hearty adventurer to find new species, I'm not familiar with any of this but maybe a few years worth of data on chemical comps in the water to compare/contrast. I would consider that square kilo or whatever form of measurement is being used 'explored'. Similar to the 'chunks' in Minecraft. Start 'x' amount of meters below the ocean floor and learn all the way up to the surface. Quite the daunting task. Sadly with the amount of planes, boats, cameras, satellites, never showing any evidence of a Megaladon still living I stand with you on I feel strongly the chances are incredibly unlikely.
Great video as always! Very informative and interesting. 10 mins just flew by! :D
Like you said, the term ''exploration'' is complex and works the same way as it does on the land. It takes combining different types of collected data. We love the ''romantic'' idea of the unknown and to have our imagination stroked by it which, on its own, gave birth to many scientists. As long as that imagination doesn't include the thoughts about Megalodon haha.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I think exploration is difficult to quantify, it's more of an activity. But as scientists we like to try and quantify as much as we can. And I do love the unknown, and I'm pretty happy that a megalodon is not there xD
Came for Subnautica. Definetly will stay for these types of videos. Love this! 🐟♥
I absolutely love your entertaining video style with a lot of witty jokes ;) nicely done, Maria!
If we consider the nature of the water of all the ocean changes every now and then, it is like quantum physics, we won't be able to thoroughly analyze the entirety of the water of the ocean, ever unless satellite technology evolves to a point that multispectral analysis becomes available and able to probe the whole depth of it instantly and with enough satellites to cover the entire planet Starlink like...
So when I hear about exploring the ocen I automatically undertstand "cartograph the sea floor" and nothing else.
As to physically live the eploration part for ourselves, even in Subnautica, you can't explore it thoroughly enough...
6:00 omg that sound!
Hey ! I just discovered you channel a few weeks ago or maybe months. Since I watch all of your videos from de the very beginning ! Like that and that keep motivate me to stay in the way of marine biology in canada( just started my baccalaureate). Hope you fine and good job really !
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed my channel. And all my videos? That is quite a commitment, especially how not very good my earlier videos were hehe Good luck with your studies!
People just love sound bytes, which is why percentages are popular. I don't believe it's even possible to have "explored" even 1% of the ocean because it is a living system that is always changing. You could measure everything there is to know about a particular square meter of ocean: salinity, temperature, pressure, density, mass, chemical composition, etc., only to have a random current sweep through and render half of your numbers obsolete.
Amazing quality and explanation, great video!!!
Thank you! I'm very glad you enjoyed it!
I know they are cheesy, but I appreciate the boat intro and other effects. Thanks for the great content!
People think about the megalodon... Imagine finding Cthulhu, Dagon or the deep ones. Now, that's scary!
Very cool! In just 8 years time, we could say we know more about the ocean than space and mean it in literally the same way that saying is meant today
New insight! Still wondering how to contribute to risen the percentage
I'd consider the estimated percentage of known species and the knowledge of physical , chemical and biochemical variables over time as an answer to the question.
Yes, ideally that would be a good way to quantify explored ocean, but we never really know how much we don't know, until we know it xD
Wait is this Earth's ocean or 4546b's ocean 🤣 anyway... loving the new kind of approach to this kind of video! Keep up the good stuff!
Ur videos always make me intrigued about the ocean . 👍🏼👍🏼
I'm happy to hear that! =)
Babe wake up Maria just uploaded
I allows thought the meaning of explored the ocean meant the physical area of the ocean and flora, fauna and terrain within each new explored region of the Ocean. That more over than the characteristics of the water itself. Such as the two colors of the water when the river meats the sea or under water ponds, rouge waves and such phenomenons.
I like how Nemo is the background :)
What about an intro in your videos? Like a space-pirate fights a megalodon THAT MIGHT BE EXIST!
great and very interesting video - looks like you had fun with the background and earrings
Thanks! Yes! I always love experimenting with the green screen. I still need to learn how to make the lighting better though :D
Great video, thanks I learn a lot, and like the way you presented the subject.
Not worried about the Megalodons, maybe some Reaper near the Aurora but nothing more ahah.
Technically 100% of ocean exploration would have to be the ability to scan 100% of the ocean at any given time. Otherwise it's just witnessing parts of a moving entity that will never be exactly as it was each instance you perceive it.
Really cool video, thanks a lot Maria !! :D
Very interesting. What you said about the water being different next time is very obvious when you consider that we (in the Far North of Scotland) find fishing gear coming from Nova Scotia!
Very interesting. I Loved it.😊😍
hehe I'm happy you liked it! :D
We do not know more about space than the oceans. Space is a never ending place (afawk)
Wow this is a very good an informative video
Great content Maria!
You said that is very unlikely for Megalodon to exist... So, there is a chance, right? xD
We really enjoyed the video! Went by super fast, and I was laughing quite a lot in the beginning. Keep it up!
Thank you! =D haha you know scientists never say anything with 100% certainty =P
This was interesting
I'm glad you liked it! :D
Wow this video was sooo interesting and high quality!!!
Thank you! I'm very glad you enjoyed it! :D
yang pasti hidupan seperti megaladon ikan2 besar takde ye anak2 dekat bwah sana.
im still worried though, doesn't sonar hurt the sea creature?...
The megladon might exist still with all that ice in antarctica
Fascinating! I wonder if they include data from oil and gas exploration? One would assume that those companies, as harmful as their products and activities are, produces vast amounts of data that could be useful to the scientific community?
Yeah, I'm sure they have a lot of data on that. But I can also imagine that some of those companies don't want to share what they know, which is unfortunate.
And what about the atlantide ? 🤡😋
Nice video Maria, love your work and explanation ! Cheer 💜
I KNOW you're wrong about the Megalodon, I just watched a documentary about it where Jason Statham fought one!
haha I have my suspicions regarding that documentary. I'm not sure it's real =P
Love this video. Your explanations are super interesting. About the existance of the megalodon, I think almost everyone knows the shark is extinct, but they like to think how cool it would be if it were still alive. But yeah, like you said, a massive predator like the megalodon would definitely make its presence known.
Very intresting, i am little disappointed that meg shark don't exist.
The only thing i cannot agree is that we had researched space better than ocean. All what we see in the sky: all stars, planets, nebulas, blackholes, neutron stars, etc. it's just 5-10% from all mass in space. 90-95 % of all known universe's mass is hided, it's dark matter or exotical matter(negative mass) or something we don't even know what it is. Only in 21 century was discovered that galaxies accelerating and distance between them increasing. If they are accelerating, then some force, probably negative mass must do it. And we dont know where all those negative mass is hided.
So, i think, today we know about space as little as we know about the ocean.
We know more about other galaxies than the depths of the oceans.
But you're saying there's a chance of megalodon existing... good.
Scientists are trained to never talk in absolutes, even when something is practically certain xD
2 Megalodons disliked this video. That's what happens when you call them shallow, Maria!
What are you most hoping we might find, any missing links marine biologists are still looking for?
Hmm.. I think one of the things that fascinates me the most is how biogeochemical cycles and marine life are connected, and how those are connected to physical parameters, and to the atmosphere. And my intention was never to offend potential megalodon viewers, I hope they forgive me =P
I consider dipping my toe in the water to check the current temperature to be exploration. ;-)
Will the better question be then the the sea life is w.e percent unexplored
5:59 scared the shit out of me
Wildworld sent me!
SO in stead what were should say is how much of the earth crust as been expored .
Discover the Marina trench.
This was cool I watch AVNJ and sea & me I find them so interesting
So happy you enjoyed it! =D
@@Seamemaria you're content is really good btw I subscribed a while back you clearly put a lot of effort in you're videos and mix it with you're actual job
That is seafloorexploration not the ocean at large
when people say 5% of the ocean has been explored i think they mean the water parte and being fisically there
When people said 5% of the oceans had been explored people meant the amount of mapped seafloor. I do not believe we have been physically in 5% of the ocean. More than 90% of the ocean is below 1000 meters, which is very difficult to reach.
Ух-ты! Спасибо!
now that you have smacked the hornets nest by trying to declare Megalodon no longer exist you should do a (series of)videos on the Mariana Trench ..because everyone knows that's where they are
commenting to help the channel !
Thank you! =)
Will bits of MH370 show up? As for Megalodon, that beast showed up in a 2018 Chinese movie and is just as "reel. "
"The Megalodon doesn't exist anymore", says the girl with a Megalodon in her bed, haha!... Greetings from Canada, have a nice day, Dr. Pinto 💖
At least god saved us 30% to live and reproduce. That was nice.
0.0001%
That's wrong...5 % has been explored
you confused us more
Most of the ocean is not really worth exploring.
Lets agree to disagree :D Especially concerning microbial oceanography, for me everything is work exploring hehe
You’re right and your wrong. Lots of the ocean is well just water... so if you want to study animals then a lot of the ocean isn’t worth studying but if you like ✨water✨ yeah
