    As your speed increases past 160kph, you can switch the electric motors to series to stop the back emf.
    You could then line up next to a Top Fuel dragster down at the local dragstrip and in all likelihood hose it off LOL.

    Well Marty I might be 5 days late to this video , certainly no shortage of smiles though, what a great creation ,repurposing old hub motors onto a free quad, ice thing about whatever the torque rating is , you have 100% all the time , at 30% it ran great , then both batteries in parallel and then turned up to my guess 40%, it goes really well, the 2nd battery on the front is good, it'll stop you from dong wheelies 🤣 it'll be a hoot to use to go and pick up your mail, your battery life on those is going to last you quite awhile, there is almost no weight for them to push, i look forward to the next video, my friend here in central Canada where we get lots of snow, his wife bought him a EGO battery powered snow blower, a 2 stage unit, I got a chance to use in 10 inches of fresh snow and man does it work nice, throws it 50 feet and you get a solid hour out of the 2- 7.5 amp/hr batteries that are 56 volt, when my gas unit dies, that is what i am buying and it is built as strong as my gas unit, 👍 BTW Marty was Dr. Nefario your teacher or influencer 😉 just curious

    The venerable Honda 250 Recon was supposed to replace the 1988-2000 Honda trx300,but only came as a 2wd,was not the uber reliable,almost bullet proof 289cc side shaft engine that won Honda a solid reputation for reliability and toughness but a transverse mounted,shaft driven,smaller displacement,even weaker rear diffed utility type atv that only an elderly grandfather could love... The "big red" 300 that marty has is the identical Honda trx 300fw that was sold in America but the tank was rebadged with Big Red instead of fourtrax... the 88 300s came with a slightly higher lift and duration camshaft, did timing chain,harder chain guides,a different header,and a slightly larger pilot jet and main jetting which produced slightly higher torque and hp ratings than the 1990 and later models..

    With that much power, I imagine it will be pretty good at towing too. Not just heavy ATV or small trailers, but things like harrows too. This may very well prove to become one or your favourite tools for certain jobs. An ingenious idea to convert it to electric rather than fixing what would be a relatively mediocre ICE ATV. Whilst EV/battery technology still has some way to go, this also nicely demonstrates quite how far we have come already. A very enjoyable and fascinating video.

    • @alskjflaksjdflakjdf
      @alskjflaksjdflakjdf ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm not sure it would have enough torque to pull harrows. Looking at similar hub motors online they appear to have about 350Nm of torque, so 700Nm torque combined. A 12kw tractor will typically output up around 5000Nm at the wheels due to the effect of gearing. So in effect, the motors that Marty is using are great for high speed, but not something like pulling heavy loads. I'm just an armchair critic and you might be more right than I think. I would love to see Marty T test it... :)

    • @herrakaarme
      @herrakaarme ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@TrevorDennis100 I doubt the frame of the ATV is meant for more than the 60kph he already achieved. With his modifications (more like rebuild), he should be careful about pushing the specs as well. We wouldn't want him to get into an accident. On the other hand, limiting the power should help him keep the controllers cooler, especially since he might not install the fans at all.

The concept is SO cool and a big thanks to the friend who hooked you up with the motors and controller and Big Battery. You've done a lot of very cool projects but this one knocks the cover right off the ball. I think it's because I know your using 30% of the capacity of those motors. I think it would be a good investment to spend some money and buy some appropriate rubber for the back tires. Keep up the great work Marty and for goodness sake - stay safe. Very well done. Such a clean build.
    To keep the centre of gravity as low as possible couldn't you make a frame to mount the second battery under where the rear carry rack would be?
    Other than that the only other suggestion would be to add an AC inverter somewhere. Because basically you have a very portable power supply and it might be handy to be able to operate 240V AC power tools in remote areas. If not permanently mounted then maybe just add an Anderson socket so you could plug in an inverter (or other DC device) and have 240v AC wherever you wanted. You could probably run it directly from one of the battery connectors but that would give a charge imbalance so an Anderson socket at the 80v DC point would be what I would do.

    I see the chickens approve of your handiwork. That looks very fun. Nice job.

    Either two micro switches or a circular encoder would be great on the steering tube to activate a specific state where when you turn the ATV, the inside drives either disconnect and freewheel or they reduce power (probably the better, but i'm not sure how easy the programming is on that brain box).

    Gotta ditch those ugly white zip ties and use some professional black zip ties :) Better yet would be some adel clamps for that motor wiring, that would look sharp! great little project you have btw. I have a low speed vehicle that was originally electric but was gutted so i'm thinking of using a diesel engine on it, its basically a golf cart that is street legal.

    Wow Marty what a cool build, I never would’ve imagined it possible. Looking forward to seeing the next video on it.

    If it’s anything like my electric skateboard. It’s a Hall Effect sensor problem. On my skateboard, I just unplugged the sensors and everything worked. However, it then only had two modes... Off and mental.
    Edit: Aaand I just watched the end of the video. Yup. Hall sensor. I’m a total noob at that stuff but it’s amazing how quickly you can pick up the basics and start building. I hope this fantastic video inspires others to do the same.

    With only using a fraction of the available power, and those adjustable torque settings, I'll be really keen to see what it can pull when you have it all back together and you're doing your testing. Hope you're considering knobblies for the back!

    A quick thought/suggestion for you: It looked like those controllers could be set up to take a speed target instead of a torque target. Are you familiar with the concept of single pedal driving that's getting popular with EVs? The major benefit is that it allows for modulated regen breaking instead of just banging on some % braking force, and allows the regen braking to be fully independent of the friction brakes so that you recapture as much energy as possible before you ever need to touch the regular brakes. If I were to guess I imagine having the throttle input set a speed target instead of a torque target, with a reasonable torque limit, would get you the same benefits here.

    Good job Marty. I put an electric motor in my 3yo daughters 50cc quad about 12 years ago, a much simpler build than this one, a 24v 500W motor & chain drive to original shaft, 36v controller & 3 x 12v 14A batteries, it did about 25km/hr & the kids all loved it.
    Love ur stuff & cant wait to see what you delight us with next. Cheers

    It's videos like this that make me crazy jealous of the wealth of information you have stored in your head. At the beginning, looking at that box of parts, I would have been totally overwhelmed and never started a project like this. You make it look so simple and matter-of-fact, but there's an extreme level of expertise behind everything you do. I wish I could just hang around the farm and absorb 1% of your skills and knowledge!

    18:45 Learned this in the hard way as my Campers waterpump did not have that kind of diode and it is controlled by canbus type system and that lead eventually destroying my waterpump node. Now got a new one and pump with diode. This was actually a designers fault but they find it about 10 years time as those nodes suddenly broke in many campers!

    Looking forward to the repaired silent monster.
    Would you ever take it on a paved road to see what the top end could be?
    Thanks for sharing.
