  • In this video I talk about the secret to "how to perfectly litter train your rabbits": cleaning. That's it. That's the secret. Just clean. I talk about territorial pooping and how different bunnies have different litter training habits and how not all rabbits can be perfectly litter trained; even after they've been de-sexed.

Rabbit poop is actually a really good fertilizer for gardens and container plants! Some people sell it at farmers markets near me, so you literally could be making a profit from your rabbits. I use my rabbits dirty bedding (poop+hay) as a mulch for my garden and as a slow release fertilizer in my house plants. Besides them trying to eat everything, they’re a gardeners best friend 🥲

I love your set up. And I think you're doing a great job at showing realistically what it's like to own rabbits. I hate how people want to house pets but then want it to look like there isn't a pet living there. A pet isn't an accessory or only needs attention when you want to spend time with them. The happiness of the pet should be number one priority. And your home is an awesome rabbit living space!

Thanks a lot for this video! We just started free roaming our two bunnies (both spayed females) a few weeks ago, and I saw many videos that made me think all rabbits would use their litter boxes perfectly. Our bunnies always use their litter box for peeing, and mostly for pooping, but they ALSO sometimes poop in front of the litter box on their carpet. No matter how often I put the poops into their litter box, there were always some of these little balls laying in front of it in the morning. I thought I was doing something wrong and became kind of sad and frustrated about it. But thanks to your video, I now know that I am actually very lucky with their habits! :D Thank you Kat! :)

Thanks for this honest and refreshing video. I just adopted a pair of bonded rabbits 3 days ago. They are spayed and litter box trained according to what the shelter said. I do find that they use their litterbox for the most part but also poop outside of their litter boxes and in other areas of the pen. It's not what I expected. Luckily now I have and hand vaccum I can use to help with that. Thanks for normalizing it. Found you through looking that issue up and I am now subscribed.

  • @evas8046
    @evas8046 3 ปีที่แล้ว

It is great that you are showing this. When I first got my bunnies, there were some major poop and pee wars before they got bonded. The wars went on for a couple of months, so it was a lot of work to take care of them.
Recently, we rearranged their cage and they started to pee outside the litter box in one spot. Thankfully that seems to have resolved.
Even now they still poop outside the litter box, but it is much, much better than before (less than 10 poops a day).
It is wonderful that you are sharing this. The litter habits are a big part of rabbit ownership (bunnies can have hundreds of poops a day) but the reality doesn't get shared enough.

i also clean my buns when i wake up, i have a year old fixed boy and he just got fixed so he’s still a little hormonal but he always goes pee in the right spot, my oldest bun is also fixed and she’s always been perfect with her litter box from the get go- and my bonded pair are the messiest but it’s nothing i can’t clean with a five minute sweep in the morning. also it’s normal for buns to poop in little odd places while they run/sleep/ sit just bc of how they digest food, normally the poo is scent free and the pee is the issue (don’t even get me started on the smell of unfixed male bunny it is so bad)
you’re doing a great job of being transparent with your responsibilities which is needed for ppl that are planning on getting bunnies :)

@@radadansupasavat9585 he might poop around until he’s had time for the hormones to fade, and remember bunnies digest quickly so they can’t control where the poo comes out- accidents will happen but i promise it becomes easier to control- i only sweep in the morning and right before bed to pick up my buns area and he doesn’t have poops far from his litter box- just keep an eye on your buns bathroom habits and you’ll know when you’re ready for him to run free :)

Thank you for making this realistic video! Been pretty clueless on how to litter train my bunnies since it simply doesn't´t seem to work, they´ve lived here for about 2 months for now and it was clear to me right from the start that I´m choosing free roaming. The problem is that even though they do pee mostly in the litter box, yet unlike my cat every now and then they suddenly pee elsewhere. Luckily for some reason they never pee on my bed, neither on the mattress (except occasionally on the one on "their" territory). Also, it´s exactly like you said in here also, the first thing I do in the morning is I clean up their mess (poop everywhere), but it´s a pretty easy and quick job, no problem with that. I´m more concerned about is having visitors, feels kind of awkward to be cleaning up this kind of mess while socialising. But it is what it is, and I´m proud to be a mum/servant for these sweet babies. They are more important to me than the idea of pleasing other people with a perfectly clean house. Having bunnies is a lifestyle and if it takes a little extra cleaning then we just have to deal with it. The bathroom door I keep closed so that there´s at least one place in the house that doesn't´t have to be cleaned everyday.

The lady I got my rabbit fom told me "it doen´t matter how good they are at using the litter box, they will change their behaviour according to the envrionment they live in" and she was right. I got her last bunny, because people didn´t want him as she warned them he was not so perfect at using his litter box. I was planning to free roam him, so it was kinda important, but I believed he was gonna be okay. He actually uses the litter box almost all the time. He does poop outside sometimes, but he is not neutered yet (appointment is schelduled) and even then, he is a good boy. Generally, he does not poop outside too often and he is not even destructive. Not cuddly, but very playful and active. Netherlands dwarft breed, so very tiny with big personality. Every rabbit is different and they sometimes just do their thing, my old rabbit, the french lop, was the festiest and most stubborn pet I ever had.

Great video with accurate depiction of the hierarchy of rabbits over hoomans! I had 2 until about 3 months ago. They were pretty good especially with not peeing outside the litter box, except for my one rabbit who pees on anything soft, which means I have tarps on my couch! Then I rescued a poor 7 yr old rabbit. They are not bonded with her.. She's not altered, so she stays in my bedroom with a baby gate between her and my other two who run the rest of the house. Since I got her, now pumpkin and Lily decided they must pee and poop around to solidify their ownership of everything! Especially near the baby gate. They pee and poop on one side, new rescue Peetie pees and poops on the other. Lol it's actually getting a bit better.. Touch wood!
But as you've said, you need to just be prepared to do random cleaning throughout the day to keep things fresh!!
    Thanks for the video!

Thank you for being so realistic about rabbit ownership! I'm curious about how much time you have to budget for bunny cleaning? I don't have a rabbit yet but I'm trying to research as much as I can before I commit.

Toodles never pooped or peed outside her box. She did kick some out when she jumps out. She was a small bun and I had two oversized boxes for her. Empty box every other day seems to be best. Nice set up. Your bunnies look happy.

I personally have litter boxes in every corner so they have the option on where they wanna go , I think it I completely normal for bunnies to not be perfectly litter box trained.

My handheld vacuum is the MVP. She helps me suck up all the poop pellets and fur that my bunny leaves behind. She pees in the box (and the one time she didn’t, she was sick), but leaves a few territorial poops under the bed so that we know that space is hers. Otherwise, she’s generally pretty good about her litter habits!

Do all bunnies owners own a Roomba? Haha 🤣 I also have one for my bunnies room. They are neutered boys, that are definitely bonded. Everyday after work, I have to pick up my bunnies room. They have their good days and their bad days. Happy to see the more realistic side of owning bunnies.

Thanks for sharing! Its been two days since we recieved our little bunny. OML, I didn't know they poop so much! I wish I had seen your video earlier. All the videos I've seen, had litter trained bunnies.....or it looked like they did through camera edits 😆. Now I dont feel so stressed about not being able to litter train our 4week old bunny....i guess its still too young and its not neutered/spayed?.... he or she is our very first pet😊...so cute! Thanks again! Love your videos

4 weeks old is far too young to have left their Mother. Rabbits shouldn't leave their Mother until they are 12 weeks old.

I swear that loops are the most unbothered breed of them all :D I worked in a bunny rescue and people coming in were usually very surprised that it smelled nice, usually with hay, with 30 to 120 bunnies in not a very big room. Well, cos we had volunteers clean it up daily (which took up to 6h). In the morning the smell was heavier :p Bunnies will do whatever they want and it's just a reality of heaving one (or few :D). There are sacrifices to be made but you can gain so much more than what you need to give up.

I adopted Thurberi, so he was already litter trained when I got him. (He was living in foster.) He's not territorial at all, but sometimes still leaves little poops around, presumably as just accidents since rabbits have such active digestive systems. Honestly he's pretty good, though. He lives in his own little room that I have a large washable pee pad (it's more like a big absorbing blanket) over the carpet of. He leaves way more stray hairballs around than poop, I think. I guess I'm pretty lucky.

Just adopted a little 3 months rabbit!
Unfortunately he was kept in a cage but on the other hand he knows where to go poop and pee. He's with me for about 3 days and I only picked up around 10 poops and no pee ✨

This is literally like my rabbits. I have two messy creatures but love them more than anything. They’re both litter trained and neutered and pee only in litters but poop everywhere. I thought I made mistakes when litter training them but I see it’s probably just their personalities. Good to know I am not the only one who has to clean every morning 😅

Brought my bun home a few days ago and he’s adjusting super well. He keeps peeing on the couch when I’m not there so I’ve opted to put the litter box on the couch until he gets fixed. Once he gets it we can migrate the litter box to a more optimal place.

Did I get lucky with my bunny? Because I trained my bunny to poop and pee in their litter. Her cage is pretty big and at this point it’s just a huge litter box. She sleeps on my bedside table and sometimes on my bed. She started doing that a week after I got her. It’s so cute because when it’s time to go to bed, she gets on the bed and goes over the bedside table. She stays there the entire night and gives me company. I ended up making a ramp to make her go up and down. It’s fascinating. I’m glad my bunny is like this.

I have 2 bunbuns and they mostly poop in their littler box. There will be some stray pooples here and there sometimes on our rug, but really not that much. I also pick them op with my bare hands lol, it's great to see a TH-camr do that as well for a change xD.
I also own a robot vaccuum cleaner and I love it :p. It's cleaning my house as we speak xD.

You're right about them being territorial. Mine had a HUGE cage that in time he pottytrained to one corner. I tried to clean every morn and he would run inside and stare me down like "MINE"! Took him out and he kept running back in till I put him in the bathroom. Released him and he would immediately run to the cage and give me "the look". If bunnies could curse! Snacks and scratches usually smoothed things over......till the next day.😁

I'm pretty grateful my bunnies are much better with this.. I have 2 and I basically have a play pen (like the brown and cream one on amazon) and I put their litter box in there with 2 stray matts since for some reason they LOVE pooping on it, soo their poop just stays in there and i clean it up many times a day, when they pee like on the bottom of it, it just is liquid so I can jsut grab a wipe and it's cleaned in less than a minute, sometimes there is a few pieces not in their litter pen but I just vacuum it up :)

My first bun was a poop machine AND he peed on me 2x 😭 he calmed down after he got neutered and was almost perfectly litter trained with some occasional poo balls by his base but that’s it! Then we got a second bun and things started going crazy 😭 1st bun kept pooping everywhere! But after they got along, the territorial poops calmed down. BUT OFC 1st bun is an ass and started treating a corner of our room like a litter box 😭 Even now after adding a litter box in that corner, sometimes he still pees on the carpet next to it??? Buns can be assholes and I just embraced my role as their personal maid. I still love them despite being the living embodiment of poop machines and pee fountains 😭

There is definently the scent of hay, food, and rabbit. If you have a dog then you have the scent of the dog and their food its normal. Definently agree I was typing this out as you said the same thing😅😅😅

I have a 2 y/o male bun and he is pee trained but may have an accident if he's very sleepy. We were cuddling and he peed on me and I think it was because he was warm and comfy. He is poop trained depending on where we are. I've lived a lot of places and some he would poop everywhere and some places he'd never poop outside his litter box it seems to depend on what smells there are. I reccomend ppl buy a shop vac for vacuuming up hay and poop since it is easy to disassemble and clean so its sanitary and won't get clogged.

I’m getting a rabbit in about a week, I’m scrambling the internet for bunny tips and tricks that I might not have known just so I’m not totally lost haha- I’m quite nervous because I have a habit of getting discouraged if an animal doesn’t feel completely okay with being around me. I just tell myself that it’s normal and you have to remember what the rabbit would be thinking at that moment, I’m already clear on how hard having a rabbit can be and I’m ready for the challenge! One question though, I noticed that some of the clips mentioned a Roomba. I have one, but I don’t want my bun to be freaked out in the process of hearing a vacuum during cleaning! Will they get used to it?
