UAW president Shawn Fain on labor's comeback

  • Last year unionized auto workers who walked out at the big three car makers won generous contracts, making up for pay cuts they'd taken during the Great Recession. It marked a comeback for the labor movement, and a notable achievement for United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain, who came up the ranks as an auto plant electrician, and still carries his grandfather's union pay stub in his pocket. CBS News chief election & campaign correspondent Robert Costa talks with Fain about the increase in public support for unions; and about efforts to organize auto workers in Southern states that are traditionally less friendly to unions.

I’ve been very lucky as a union member to not see a strike in my 37 years as a union worker. I have seen tough negotiations that almost lead to a walk out that never arrived. I hear what others are paid per hour in right to work states & it makes me cringe. I’m able to support my wife on one income. Have a modest income & afford to own a house in one of the most expensive parts of the country. Work with dignity & respect everyday. Have a future in retirement. All because I belong to a union.
My great grandfather died as a result of the Great Depression. He worked his entire life working 12 hour days, 7 days a week without a day off or a sick day. He did not belong to a union. When he was let go by his employer because he couldn’t count. They never offered him training to count fares on a trolley. They let him go. He had no benefits or retirement. He went for a walk one morning to never return. He was found floating in a pond face down a day later. His family had to burry him. That is what unions were about initially. Death benefits for members who died. There was nothing for the family post death. That’s a crime. The fat cats at the top won’t acknowledge that though.

Let's also not forget that Tenants Unions are also Labor Unions!
Tenants WORK, we work to pay rent and keep a roof over our family's heads, food on our tables, clothes on our backs.
Tenants Unions and Labor Unions are ALL making a HUGE resurgence and I'm GLAD to see it!
Landlords and Employers are utterly taking advantage of workers.
Wages haven't gone up but our rent has, the cost of food, healthcare and our daily essentials just to get by are skyrocketing out of control.
Sure they say "inflation" is stabilizing but what ISN'T taken into account on inflation indexes are the consumable things everyone, especially working families, need to get by: Rent, Food, Transportation, Healthcare...these aren't measured by Inflation indexes.
So, news outlets are reporting incomplete information and not giving the full picture!
As President Biden said: "Wall street didn't build America, the Middle Class did!"
Let's add to this: "Landlords don't provide housing, carpenters, plumbers, construction workers, HVAC workers...THEY build and provide housing!"
Let's bring back "LandLord" As a Dirty Word!!

My step dad didn’t like unions, even though he was represented by the UAW. Him and my mom worked in aerospace and benefited from the union. He complained that the union gave rise to mediocrity. That bad workers were able to get away with being lazy and didn’t have to be accountable for their work.
He died at 51, never getting to retire and get to benefit from the CBA. Fitting.

    • @matthewingerson
      @matthewingerson 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

No, Fain should NOT be President. Sean *could* be great on the NLRB or as the Secretary of Labor, but he would need to receive *significant education* before obtaining either position.
A person in the Office of the President can only make changes if that person understands how to wield the power of the Executive Branch (and even if they know how to do so, they still may not be able to make any changes).
As such, the Office of the President should be occupied by someone who understands the government & governing (Nixon, Ford, Reagan, & Bush Jr. didn't adequately understand, and Trump REALLY didn't understand, and look where they all got us).
But Fain should NOT be President unless he quits the UAW and commits a SIGNIFICANT amount of time(years) to the study of government & governing. Anything less would be irresponsible on his part -- and unacceptable to intelligent people -- and it would be irresponsible/ignorant on the part of the citizens to vote for him if he didn't commit to such study.
If one has a brain-issue, one doesn't call a proctologist.
If one has a governing-issue, one doesn't call an electrician (Fain's education is as an electrician, not in government and/or governing).
If Fain were elected POTUS without receiving a significant amount of education, he would just get steam-rolled by the people in the orbit of the White House who know how to use the government to delay, deteriorate, diminish, distract, or divert a POTUS's ability to govern.
But Fain would be a great addition to the Administration of a President who knew how to use the Executive Branch of government to govern.

It's a good hyperbolic-slogan, but real difficult-action will need to be taken. Something will have to be done about two groups of people:
      1. The sizable, yet populace-minority group of working-class dupes who volunteer to be the cops&soldiers, acting as the human-buffers between the wealthy-class/right-wingers and the working-class.
      2. The other, much larger group of working-class dupes who support the wealthy-class/right-wingers by voting for wealthy right-wing-extremist Republicans and wealthy moderate-right-wing Democrats.

Worker income has significantly lagged behind increased costs of living and corporate profits for decades. It showed very clearly when workers stopped receiving raises after 2009 while C-suites got bonuses. The continued attacks from corporations to the government came to a head thanks to Bidenflation.

I can count in 1 hand the total number of union workers who actually enjoyed their job and gave me good service as a So-Cal Regional trucker in Coca Cola, Pepsi, The ports of Long Beach. One outgate roadability technician acted as if I was asking him to rebuild a truck when all I needed was air in a tire. I said I was going from LB to San Diego, and you are not allowed to work on chassis inside of Pier 400/Maersk. Another time outgoing THE meditteranean port on Henry Ford ave, an outgate mechanic just red tagged a chassis instead of replacing a flat. And another time at the one next to Cosco/Queen Mary a pair of mechanics only switched the dead tail lights on a chassis and played dumb saying they were out of tires to replace for repairs. I swear I disturbed their nap time. And another time at Trapac I asked a yard supervisor where a flip line was and she snapped back "I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT IS!!!" as she buried her face back in her smartphone. Compare that to the nice lady at APL (NOW CALLED EAGLE MARINE) where a lady said follow my truck as I was guided to my air flip area.

My husband works in a union auto plant as an engineer (non-union). He can count on one hand the number of union workers who don't sbuse the system and actually want to do a good job. They work the hardest of anyone - at trying to do as little as possible. 5 years of experience at 2 different plants tells him that the stereotype of laziness is absolutely true.

I'm not saying all are like that, there was a forklift driver at coca-cola near downtown LA who came and found me to rush and load me up asap. Another technician at yanjin LBCT who did the bit inspection and greased up the chassis thoroughly too one time. But like you mentioned a lot of slackers, majority slackers. I bet your husband gets bullied or harrased by his co-workers. Reminds me of this prison guard in San Diego that spoke of corruption and had hanging nooses and rat traps spread out in his work area. @@kimberlyault9242
