Why Ford Really Needs Its New F-150 Pickup Truck To Succeed

  • The Ford F-150 is the single strongest selling model in the United States. It is also the product that many say keeps the lights on at Ford. While SUVs may be the talk of the automotive industry, competition in the pickup segment has been steadily growing. Ford is also becoming ever more dependent on sales of large SUVs and trucks and on North American customers. Unfortunately for Ford, its Detroit rivals are in a similar position. It also began rolling out the latest generation of its market leading and profit making F-150, which it needs now more than ever.
    While the Ford Bronco made news when it returned to Ford dealerships with 2021 models earlier this year, the success of the Ford F-150 has long been important to the company's performance. As of October 14, 2020 Ford stock hovered at around $7.60 per share.

    Ford will be fine. Probably has the best future out of the Detroit 3. F-150 is it's cash cow, Mustang is it's star child and the Bronco has the writings of future fan favourite.
    They definitely need to keep an eye on FCA (soon to be Stellantis) - their RAM and Jeep brands have always been competitive and unlike GM, FCA still has a significant global presence with cherished brands.
    GM is seriously the problem child out of the three. I don't know if the 2008 bailout and ignition switch scandal has been a slow poison but they've got one heck of an uninspiring playbook. Their handling of global brands (the 11 that they've mismanaged/sold-off/or killed), model revivals (Blazer), halo vehicles (Camaro) and key market presence (the 4 major regions they pulled out from) is for me a true reflection of its reputation and not it's title as the largest US car maker.
    Anyways, the C8 is a promising offering and the upcoming GMC EV Hummer might propell them in the right direction so I guess time will tell.

I currently drive a Ranger Lariat that is a nice truck but missing a lot of what makes a Lariat. The Ranger Raptor is a long waited arrival to the US and it is bit confusing as to why Ford is ignoring the sale of the RR. perhaps it would affect the sales of the F 150 where there is more profit. Not sure. The new Bronco should add to the success of Ford overall. There are a lot of comments about the cost of these well equipped trucks, and it is true that the number of people that can afford them is shrinking, at least here in the US. Not true. Automakers, like any smart business, follow the demand of the market. People do not want cheap trucks and they do not buy cheap trucks. My local GMC dealer STILL has a 2019 regular cab base model truck with the base v6 engine sitting on its lot. This truck is the cheapest GMC Sierra you can buy and its done nothing but sit on the lot since LAST WINTER. Trucks are getting more techy and more expensive, yes, but it hasn't hurt sales, in fact, its done just the opposite as more Americans are buying trucks now than ever before. Why? Because that's what the buyer wants. Want proof? The F-150 starts at about $29,000 (which gets you a very basic, bare bones truck... we're talking regular cab, short bed, 4x2, with hand crank windows, manual locks, no cruise control, and a standard 3.3L v6 that is less powerful than the engine in the Nissan Frontier midsize pickup) but the average sale price of the F-150 is $48,000, almost $20,000 more than the base price! Beyond that, a simpler truck with a lower price means lower profits, so even if such a truck did sell better, which all available evidence suggests it would not, it would HAVE to sell better because the auto manufacturer would have to make up for the lower profit per unit sold. Believe me, if the market showed any sizeable and sustainable demand for cheaper, simpler half-ton trucks, then the auto manufacturers would be tripping over themselves to bring such a truck to the market, but that's not the case. You have to understand, cheap and simple trucks sell so poorly among private buyers that Toyota, Nissan, and Ram no longer offer a current generation regular cab work truck and GMC will likely drop there's for the Sierra's 2022 refresh, that will leave only Chevy and Ford still offering a regular cab truck, and of those two Ford is the only one that still offers the regular cab with either a 6.5' bed or an 8' bed, Chevy only offers an 8' bed. The only reason Chevy and Ford still make basic work trucks is because fleets still buy enough of them to justify their existence.

      @dave3682 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarloSoBalJr What? No. Demand cannot be created, it can only be filled. Demand, even if it hasn't been revealed yet, always proceeds a successful product, otherwise the product will fail. This is why you have market researchers who are payed huge stacks of cash to go out and do research to find the demand so that the manufacturer can produce a product to fill it. So no, demand is not created by what producers put on the market because if it's a bad product that there was no preexisting demand for in the first place, it will not sell well. The people want fancy tech and toys so that's what the manufacturer gives them, not the other way around. And the proof for that is, once again, that the cheap and simple trucks that are available do not sell well among private buyers.

    They really messed up when they stopped making sedans, the Ford Fusion and Focus were selling very well, now sedan buyers will be running to Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai. Ford always gives up on their cars and let's the quality of them dissolve instead of improving their models and standing by them....they have no loyalty to their own products the way Toyota has stood buy the Camry and Honda stood with the Accord, even when sales weren't the best Japan kept the product selling and improved....Ford destroyed the Taurus in 1996 and made it a joke they never recovered from that....once the best selling vehicle in America now it's gone.

      Ford is stopping production of cars because they are almost bankrupt. The future is electric and Ford knows they are behind and maybe missed it. They are trying to squeak out whatever cash they can from SUV's and trucks, but ultimately all efforts will be futile if they cannot produce an electric vehicle that competes with Tesla. This is likely their catch 22. They know they need to go electric but they do not have the know-how of how to do it well enough. Remember Ford, GM both were bankrupt in 2008 and were bailed out then, which was the first year Tesla was in existence.
      If we take history as an example, when major industries are disrupted, it is typically from outside the industry. For example, Nokia did not create the iPhone. Apple made the iPhone and at the time was not a phone maker at all. Now Nokia is not around and Apple is one of the biggest manufacturers of phones. Same thing with Blockbuster and Netflix. Same thing when Ford entered the market of horse transportation.
      GM's CEO is open about the future being electric and they actually have some stuff on the way. Unfortunately a free market economy doesn't care about brand or the past. The Market cares about better technology and cost. EV's are the future whether anyone wants it or not. Tesla is here. Other car makers will either compete or they will be gone.

      @@spencerpeterson8477 What your saying definitely makes sense and I do agree with most of it, but my issue with for is that instead of improving the quality of the product and bringing in top notch engineers they often scrap the car or rename it with the same low quality engineering. Now to me the Fusion was a really good car that sold pretty well especially among corporate fleets and we know American car companies depend or rental fleets and civil service vehicle sales...but if you look now there's more imports supplying fleet vehicles...Hertz has more Toyotas now then ever before when at one point you could only get a Ford a Hertz...I think they should have just improved the cars. Mr. Peterson you definitely made a valid point with the electronic vehicles Ford is way behind.

    Pick up trucks, especially current new vehicles, are the best cars anyone could ever need. You've got space to carry 5 passengers. You've got massive cargo bed where you can throw anything from dirt and gravel to furniture from IKEA. And in the end, with the level of luxury goodies current top of the range pick ups have, you can enjoy on a long journey or take your wife to an opera. A perfect car.. The only person who wouldn't want one is somebody living in a crowded city like New York but for anyone else - pick up is the way to go baby.
