Yeah. I mean it probably has huge aftermarket support. So if you'd like to bump up your power, you could do that. If you're happy with the power you got, then you could leave it as is. It's a small car and 200 hp would definitely feel a lot faster than in a Jetta. Just rip out your backseats and carpet and go full on lightweight.
GT86 wasn't underestimated, the reception was pretty damn accurate. After such a long time of being out of sports cars, Toyota was finally back and they were partnering with Subaru on this project, so there was a lot of hype on how great the car could be. And then the result was just an alternative option to an MX-5. The 200 hp was just mediocre to the point of being boring when you had exited a corner. If it had between 225-275 HP stock and with it's ~2800lb curb weight, it'd be Toyota bringing back a taste of the past's fast, light, and FR layout Japanese cars that Japanese competitors had discontinued ages ago (S2000, RX-7 FD, S15). Fortunately the new GR86 comes with 228 hp and ~2770 lb curb weight which is respectable and gives an excellent balance of speed and handling.

Not necessarily, I'm 20 right now, huge petrolhead, and I can assure you that I would have loved to be in that generation with these kinds of sports cars back when they were new, like the 240z or the supra for examples. They would need to partner with another automaker like Lotus to develop the chassis since for a company like Toyota it would be extremely unlikely for them to spend money developing an entire platform just for one car. That being said, it would never compare to the original in a size/weight aspect because of modern safety regulations. If you see a first gen MR2 in person it is seriously TINY. But it would still be awesome if they did
They are rumors they have someting planned. But the car will be a competitor for the Corvette C8 and Nissan GTR, so it will not aim at the same buyers.

Wrong u boomer. 90s sucked and thats a fact
People underestimated the GT86, which I believe is a great car despite of the lack of hp.
because the gt86 was made to be fun
HP is totally overrated when we can't go over 70 and can be ticketed for accelrating hard even if you don't technically go over the speed limit...
Fortunately the new GR86 comes with 228 hp and ~2770 lb curb weight which is respectable and gives an excellent balance of speed and handling.
and now Honda is supposedly developing a new S2000 man I’m really excited to see this new JDM wave
I REALLY hope this is true because i feel like the new supra, 400z, and this supposed new S2000 maybe able to spark some hope in the JDM market

@@ao8271 it will not,I hope the only solution if honda want to resurrected s2k is maybe partnership with another company or making themselves but little bit expensive.

@@andipajeroking The LFA is the greatest Japanese supercar...
@@DjDizzy216 Actually if you compare it to the competition at the time (1991)...the NSX had similar 0-60 times and lap times.
In my opinion I don't think nostalgia really comes from the name completely, but the spirit and charm of the 90s is what we adored. Every details when it comes to designing plays a huge role. Wheel design, Door handles, Fenders, Bumpers, Dashboard, Engine bay, You name it.
We're entering a return to the glory days of JDM, just before zero-emission vehicles take over.
Maybe even when zero emissions take over, JDM grants us with awesome fun sports cars focused on tuning culture.
I hope new fuels are developed so we can have zero emissions combustion engines
Everyones crying about old cars being better, but they dont realise that this right now is the peak of I.C.E, cars cant get any better without exceeding the emmision regulations. I mean we have v8's making 600 hp for under 100k, 1800 hp pushrod hypercars, and eve3n a freaking hellcat powered truck that gets less than 10 mpg. its only going downhill from here so appreciate what you have
That doesn't prevent Japanese from delivering an exciting, zero-emission, sports cars. They have the technology and resources to make that possible.
If I wanted an electric car I’d just take a train

Not necessarily, I'm 20 right now, huge petrolhead, and I can assure you that I would have loved to be in that generation with these kinds of sports cars back when they were new, like the 240z or the supra for examples. The thing is, right now these cars are getting friggin old want it or not (my miata is older than I am)... so, in a world dominated by crossovers, I'm glad to have an opportunity, that "my" generation has an opportunity to be able to enjoy this kind of cars too... at least before they get over 25 y/o 😂
Bring back the mr2 Toyota.
Man of culture
i hear they are trying but ehhh,, they said that about the supra in like 2005 sooo
I drove a first gen with a 4age thing was a rocket ship ! Legit feeling the powwwah
Honestly I'm a truck guy but every truck guy I know buys a sports car after getting his truck. And growing up in the 90s means I have a sweet spot for Japanese sports cars

Mercedes and BMW have done it over the last years too. They call a car a "grand coupé", which is basically a coupe with an extended body and different frame, AKA a damn sedan🤣. Germans Engineers have always been quirky, but damn🤣

@@juanordonezgalban2278 It's marketing, because a lot of people want a sports car look, but still have the suv - so adding coupe to the name and sloping the roof so that the rearview window is more horizontal vs vertical does go a ways in giving the car a sportier, sleeker feel. You have to be a very boring person to buy an M3 for example as automatic.
I feel like the nsx is Honda's chance to make a car that can compete with corvettes. Who knows in the future they could even be on the level of mclarens.
Well it was made to compete with Ferarri atm afaik
These sports are cars the average consumer can actually afford and their cult following means that the demand for them will not go away no time soon
Not just that, Japanese sport cars could be competitive in every type of racing from alpha to dirt unlike muscle car.
@@benjaminfranklyn604 that is very true! I dont know any muscle that u can really drift or drive on dirt with serious modifications
Including Mazda Miata in the high performance category. Finally, a man with culture. Hats off to you.
He knows miata is the answer
lol Miata as a performance car is just wrong. Fun to drive? Sure, but it's to performance cars what a 250 CC sport bike is to 600's. Sure, it's lighter, it'll carry speed through a corner, but even squeezing every ounce of performance out of it, it will get left behind, so you kinda have to hang out with same or just do your own thing, which can be fun for some.
@@leok7193 On that thinking all cars other than supercars are not performance cars.
Indeed its not a high performance car, but it s more performant than 80% of the car market.
I’m on my third BMW, and while I do love them, I miss my first car - my red 2002 Toyota Celica everyday. It was such a great car.
There was something magical about that era (late '90s), where your Toyota, Nissan, or Honda was a Statement of "Oh yeah? well I chose this !" as you roared down the road faster than most could have expected.
I think as more cars become electric SUVs, there will always be people who want a passionate and beautiful gas powered sports car. It will be a growing niche market so I hope the Japanese companies continue them
Unless they live in a country that will be banning gasoline vehicles by a certain year.
Mitsubishi 3000GTS is heavily underrated
Being an rx7 owner this does make me feel bubbly inside lol
As a Miata owner, I am making strange but happy 90s noises. Btw, how's your Wankel holding up?🙃
@@jg5001 currently rebuilding it lol

be carefull with sander van der kammen
Hard to believe they did this story and not one mention of the 86 or BRZ. Those two cars are the epitome of Japanese sports cars of the past.
who knew CNBC could be such a great car channel
The car that is close to reality to me is that Honda Civic Type R ❤️
What color?
@@johnconnor7501 either gray or red
Red is really nice. For whatever reason it doesn’t sell well. Everybody wants boost blue or white
@@Jtbg80 I like it in red or blue. Maybe not many people choose red because bright red paint can't be metallized, I don't know.
Can't wait for the new Z!!
Sports car and sporty cars are not the same thing! The list of true Japanese sports cars is rather short: NSX, LFA, 2000 GT, GTR, early to mid 90s 300ZX TURBO, Mark IV Supra Turbo and 1993-1995 RX7, HONDA S2000. That’s it!! Every else is/was a sporty car.
Toyota : "We teamed up with BMW to make a new Supra, 86 with Subaru"
Nissan. : "LOL I don't need any help from other manufactures to make Z"
Mazda : "I'm still working on reliable rotary engine"
Mitsubishi : "You guys making sportscar again ?"
