  • I'm not one to chase down musicians to get their signature, but have come across albums throughout the years and met my fair share of artists in the flesh. In this episode of Talking About Records I highlight the signed albums in my collection and the stories behind them.
✶ Talking About Records is presented by NTX Vinyl, a local, independent, chain of community based record stores in the DFW area.

My most prized autograph album is one my father got when performing in the Seattle and Vancouver symphonies when Igor Stravinsky was guest conducting in the 1960s. He got Stravinsky to autograph an album of "Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky, the Firebird". Other musician autographs I got personally (but not on vinyl)were Russian piano titan Vladimir Horowitz who autographed my concert program, and Count Basie who autographed my ticket stub. Not much time to exchange conversation with either other them...

Will you ever get back to the weekly vinyl unboxing that was best part of the TH-cam channel

Glad you liked them. The idea was great but now is difficult logistically. We used to get a single order in each week, of 3-4 boxes. Now we've grown and are getting several orders in each week, all at different times, so it's just not as simple as it used to be.

I usually buy them from the artist website pre-release they might sign a few hundred of them special edition. I’ve always looked at it like a signed painting, they’re signing their artwork.

Great video! I've never had anyone autograph an album for me but I've bought Jethro Tull's Songs From the Wood signed by Ian Anderson and Martin Barre, The Pogues Peace & Love signed by Shane MacGowan, Dave Van Ronk's No Dirty Names signed by Dave himself, and Spirit of the West's Go Figure signed by the whole band.

    Awesome autographs and cool topic.
So jealous of your Crowes album. I talked to Chris after a CRB show and got a picture with him but not an autograph. Met Rich & Marc Ford as well. The advantage of seeing them playing tiny venues during their solo runs.
The only autographs I have is from the original Candlebox lineup. It’s on a greeting card envelope because it was what I had handy when I saw them.

Love Burning Brides. Fall of the Plastic Empire is an amazing album start to finish. I saw them perform when the opened for Audioslave on their debut tour at Austin Music Hall back in the day. Fantastic show!

Saw the same tour in Dallas at Bronco Bowl. That was was my first time seeing the Brides and was instantly a fan. Then just a few months later I started working with them.

Very cool! It's fun meeting and getting signatures from artists that you have liked and listened to. Unfortunately, I've never gotten an LP signed (edit... Duh, yeah I did but I mention that originally below) but I have gotten tickets signed. Some of it was from before I lost most of my vision and was a lot more mobile. But actually, and kind of surprisingly, a lot more of it happened after my vision loss. I've had a few really cool ones that I consider my favorites.
    1. John Paul Jones in Fort Worth. He signed my ticket, a very rare 7-in record/CD promo from Atlantic Records for Stairway to Heaven, and a bootleg LP from when they played in Fort Worth 1977. The Atlantic Records promo item has never been opened. I'd have to take the shrink wrap off and lose JPJ signature if I did that. And one of my talking about, I did get him to sign over his image on Led Zeppelin's debut album.
    2. Steve Smith
    3. Gregg Rolie
    4. Ross Valory
    5. I would have had Neal Schon's signature on my unused ticket, because my friend and I just followed some sound people in during sound check, but he didn't wait the 30 seconds it took me to borrow a pen from Elson who produced/engineered those early Journey LPs. Schon said he'd wait but then he just walked off the stage when I went to get the pen.
    6. Rik Emmett
    7. Mick Taylor
    8. Robin Trower -And this was a cool one! It was pure coincidence running into him behind the Dallas House of Blues after his show. Nobody was back there except Trower, two of his guys, and the limo pulled up to the curb as my friend and I were walking over to a restaurant. We had just seen the show and Robin Trower, and John Paul Jones too, as well as Valory for that matter, were the coolest people and just stood there talking with us. They were in no rush to get away or move on. They actually enjoyed it it seemed like as much as I did. Robin Trower's guys finally had to yell at him out of the limo saying come on, we got to go. You could tell he really enjoyed meeting his fans. And I know he saw me dead center and up front with a microphone in my hand recording the show haha.
    9. Johnny Winter - This one was cool too because I was on his tour bus sitting next to him and he signed my ticket upside down. He was as blind as I was. One of his guys took a picture of us. I was able to get pictures with Rolie, Emmett, Taylor, and another artist or two through the years. That got me to start trying to take a camera if I thought there was any chance I might meet the artist.
I've had a few others through the years but those all stand out to me.
I'm glad you made this video because it reminded me of some good times I've had. And it was cool seeing those signatures you got! It's really a blast getting to meet people that you really appreciate and have spent hours, and countless dollars, listening to their music through the years...

FLICKERSTICK! I loved those guys and that record is awesome. Watched them religiously on Bands On The Run and we saw them at Maxwell's in Hoboken live like right after they won the show. Really fun show. I need to buy myself a copy of that album!

I like my records signed - nearly a quarter of my collection is. But I'm collecting Goth and Post Punk, so the bands are no super stars and it is easier to get the records signed. I always write down where and when they got autographed - but sometimes... sometimes I’m fast enough to grab the setlist :)

That's awesome. I really don't care much for signatures, unless I actually obtain the sig myself.

I am going to be meeting my favorite band and I have my most memorable record from them that I want signed, in your opinion, should I get the autograph on the vinyl itself or the cover? This vinyl is a limited press of 1k and is extremely hard to find and I only plan on using it for Display! Which would you do if you were in my shoes?

    • @NTXVinyl
      @NTXVinyl  ปีที่แล้ว

It’s a tough call. Maybe ask the artist what THEY think would be coolest? Most people have the cover signed, which is why I go for the record itself sometimes, simply because it’s more unique.

Stubbs is a cool place. They used to have an indoor stage as well. Been a long time since I've been back. I used to collect autographs, but they were all stolen (except a handful on CD) out of the house I was in the process of moving out of. I didn't care if they were big groups, only important to me. I may have a couple on record (I did get autographs from Low in person on LP) if I just found them that way out thrifting. I remember the band Tripping Daisy from back in the day, but don't know their music. I tried to get an autograph from Dr. John,, but he blew me off, so I don't like the guy. Some musicians are all happy on stage, but in person are jerks.

Yeah my label pressed 600 and it sold out on pre-order, then the band did a second pressing for same amount and also sold out too. No idea if it'll get another pressing. They are back together though in a different form, playing shows, and have other merch avail. They are good buddies of mine.
