As someone from Kolkata, this heritage tag is what's killing the tram, it should've been upgraded, it should've been given priority over cars and its path should've been reserved and slowly converted into light rail.

As someone from Calcutta, I grew up watching and taking occasional joy rides on these trams. Since the early days, the condition of these trams were kept poor, dilapidated to say the least. Lost heritage comes with a price and today's Kolkata would never become the vibrant Calcutta. It takes enough political will with pure intentions to make people's lives better. And it seems that the state government, as well as the people in large has no interest to realise the dream of a modern metropolis. Very unfortunate state of affairs!

You can easily build trams in high density areas and pedestrianized areas like Bengaluru's MG road, church street, Koramangala, Indra Nagar, etc. The charges being high won't effect this kind of business because street parking is already so expensive and people will be willing to pay more for getting to places faster and more comfortably.
Hell, just one line between Koramangala to Indranagar via Church Street will go so well with Bangaloreans. That would supercharge the local economy.

You don't build infrastructure because it feels good to have or matches the pace of a tourist, you make it to serve the largest population and prevent additional stressors to the flow of traffic. If Mysuru decides that the palace area is heritage, bans all traffic in the 6-8 localities around it and puts 20 trams. That is good utilisation. Bengluru is traffic nightmare central already.

Kuch steps se yeh chiz improve ho sakta hai.
    1. Rasta se tram ka allocated zone ko other road vehicles se alag karo. Tram track pe bus, taxi, auto, aadi ka chadna rok do.
    2. Naye tram lao taki public ka muh tram dekhte hi sadd na jaye. Modern trams me 2 se zyada section aur air conditioning hote hai.
    3. Tram use ke liye ballasted tracks aur designated tram stops istemaal karo, taki public ko hapazardly tram se chadna utarna na ho. Barricades lagao taaki public train ke tarah tram ko v respect karein.
    4. Ek space saving idea dun. Kolkata ka trams ko reverse karne ke liye reverse loop use hota hai kyuki tram me ek hi motorman cabin hote hai. Ise hatake local aur metro ke tarah dono taraf driver cab lagao aur ek permanent track switch ka istemal karo.
    5. Tram tracks ke upar rasta jahan hoga wahan pe accha khasa ek tram gate lagao. Isse tram acceleration ke kam time bitayga.
    6. Tram ka power supply ko 25 kV AC me switch kardo aj ka 550 V DC OHE se. Aur power ko on grid solar plant se lao tram chalane ke liye. Isse equipment cost kam hoga. Sabse best hoga battery tram operate karna. Sirf tram terminus station pe battery charge hoga.
    7. Trams ko ek scheduled headway me rakh ke chalao. Taaki frequently tram mile public ko. Jahan metro ja nahi payga wahan tram chalao.
    8. Aise prachar karo taaki public ko apna 4 wheeler aur 2 wheeler use ke jagah tram sawari me fayda dikhe. Rasta ko chaura banake trams ko v chalaya ja sakta hai.
    9. Public se gadi kharidne time ek tax lo, jo sirf tram infrastructure me use hoga. Bus se public transport akele manage mat karo.

    Hi Aakash,
I love your videos and watch and learn about many current affairs from them on a regular basis. There is one issue I want to address though. I've seen in this video and other videos that you've spoken about "narrow roads" in a negative way and less space for roads is a bad thing. Also, you've said in this video that there's no space for trams in a modern highly populated and congested city.
I would just appreciate it greatly if you would dig deeper into "urban planning" and "sustainable growth and development" and get to know how actual urban cities are making changes, mainly in European cities (now also in a few American and Canadian cities as well). I feel that you will learn more about public transit systems, like modern trams (LRT) and their specific advantages over any motor vehicle that has to be driven by the passenger. I think you'll also get to know more about how people centric road and street designs lead to happier and more efficient people which in turn makes a city more livable, workable and also tourist friendly... the greatest example being Amsterdam.
Again, I love your videos and appreciate you for making them. Hope I could provide some value to you, as you have for many of us.

Reviving tram is not difficult task as the infrastructure like depots rakes and lines are already there. Just need Government will and good technology to modernise this mode of transport which is clean and green. If European cities can run trams successfully why not Kolkata. Atleast preserve it as Tourist sight seeing rides.

agree that trams may be costly but atleast less costly than metro (tram building is 10 crore cost per km), on top of that kolkata already has tram infrastructure so nothing new has to be built other than revival and rehabilitation of tram lines hence cost will be even lower.

CTC recently hired 50+ new tram drivers. WB govt with collaboration of Jadavpur University researchers recently made a survey about how to revive the tram. New tram routes will also be added to salt lake Sector-V, Newtown or proposed bengal silicon valley city! New tram's will be of course new modern AC coaches, efficient electrical supply, improved speed. It will help to significantly reduce carbon emission.

It's better to do some research on a regional level. It's due to decades of ignorance and lack of modernization. The trams have a lot of demand, but the thing is, the frequency is uncertain. With proper policies, the trams can be rejuvenated, and there are a lot of people who actually use the trams on a daily basis.
The number of buses is low. There is no proper schedule and timing of buses, and so do for trams. They don't create congestion.
With the existing depots and system and with proper maintenance, the trams can serve the city very well.

While the criticisms mentioned for trams seem valid, they're not necessarily true. Trams still run in a lot of European countries as their main mode of rapid transit within cities. In the UK itself, trams are found in Manchester and Birmingham, two very large and modern cities.
The difference is that the trams are rather modern, efficient and quite a bit faster than Kolkata trams.
