  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Simon Napier-Bell, Legendary Music Producer & Manager, Author, “Sour Mouth, Sweet Bottom: Lessons from a Dissolute Life”
    About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Simon Napier-Bell, is one of the most highly accomplished people in the entertainment industry we’ve ever had on our show.
He’s a successful songwriter, whose works include the lyrics to “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”, which became a huge hit for Dusty Springfield and Elvis Presley.
He was a great record producer. He was the manager for many top music artists, including the Yardbirds, Marc Bolan, Japan, Wham, George Michael, Sinead O’Connor, Boney M, and many more.
He’s written 6 books, starting with, “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”, about his experiences in the music business in the 60’s. Then came, “Black Vinyl, White Powder”, a fascinating, disturbing exposé of the impact of the drug culture on the British music business. Next came “I'm Coming To Take You To Lunch”, the story of how he took Wham! to Communist China, making them the first Western rock group ever to play there. He then wrote a history of the popular music business, entitled, “The Business”. After that, came “50 Years Legal: Welcome to our Liberation”, marking 50 years since the UK decriminalized homosexuality.
Most recently, he’s released an absolutely delicious memoir entitled, “Sour Mouth, Sweet Bottom: Lessons from a Dissolute Life”, an unforgettably frank, funny and fascinating collection of episodes from his remarkably unconventional life.
If that weren’t enough, he’s also directed 4 highly acclaimed documentary films, entitled “To Be Frank”, in honour of what would have been Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday; “50 Years Legal” the companion film to his book by the same name, “27: Gone Too Soon”, about the infamous “27 Club”, that includes music stars like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Amy Winehouse, all of whom died at the age of 27.
And his most recent film is entitled, “George Michael: Portrait of an Artist”, the definitive feature documentary of George Michael's life.

What a thrill to interview the King of British rock managers, Simon Napier-Bell. In this fascinating in-depth interview, he talks about how he came up with the lyrics to “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” (which became a big hit for Dusty Springfield and Elvis Presley), the prevalence of drugs in the British rock music world, the challenges of managing brilliant but emotionally fragile artists like George Michael and Sinead O’Connor, and so much more. This interview is definitely one for the ages!

Simon is a wise and kind man, and a huge influence on modern music since the 60s.

@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980I don’t understand why it’s not widely watched either. I think people want scandal, but you don’t seem to peddle in that., which I admire.
      Thanks for your shows.
