  • 🦚"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." --opening line of Pride and Prejudice, This opening line remains one of the most famous lines ever written in one of the most famous novels in the history of English 🇬🇧 literature.
    The epic Pride and Prejudice manuscript by novelist Jane Austen was first written from 1796 to 1797, with an initial working title 'First Impressions'. Following revisions, Pride and Prejudice was published on 28 January 1813, by the same Mr. Egerton of the Military Library, Whitehall, who had supported Austen's release of 'Sense and Sensibility'.
    Jane Austen wrote multiple of her spectacular novels 'Northanger Abbey', 'Sense and Sensibility', and 'Pride and Prejudice' at her childhood home, Steventon Rectory, in the English countryside of Hampshire.

      The name means 'pure, clear' a subordinate of the word Katherine. In Hebrew a 'ray of light' or 'sunbeam' any wonder in these days of glorified ignorance, such a name is persecuted.
      It is also the title of an ethnic group in Burma who's base also an ancient culture.
      Name perjury reflects the bias of those reporting falsity of temperament. Quite ridiculous the followers of silly trends.

    Grizzled, 67 yo, ex-military man speaking here of the marvelous work by this fine literary artist. What a wonder are Ms. Austen's stories. Above all, I am struck (and appalled) by the paltry options left for women of the day. No hope of any meaningful work, the Bennet ladies are, in the main, left with: a. marrying into wealth; b. inheritance; c. a life of poverty. To women, very little above disgrace, is available. And God-forbid a means-providing patriarch dies. In P and P, the possible death of Mr. Bennet has potentially catastrophic consequences for the Bennet ladies. What a world, and JA explores it expertly. Bravo!

      Stop trying to find the Mr. Darcy’s, we often go back to what we know and that is toxic to us. If you’re in a friendship hoping it leads to a relationship and it feels like all the rest then walk a way. Consider this, people who are a bit more reserved may prove more fruitful and they may feel different or challenging.
      As a guy, I’ve found that I repeat my mistakes when looking for relationships. End up with something that’s been before.

    I love how Mary just disappears after the family embarrasses themselves at the ball. It's like Austen forgot there were supposed to be five sisters and just mentioned the four throughout.

    • @elainagilbert7663
      @elainagilbert7663 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @alison webster I've read this book twelve times, it's one of my favorites. Mary is mentioned here and there, but mostly as an afterthought. Lydia and Kitty and Jane and Elizabeth are the main focus of the story. It makes me wonder why Jane chose to give the Bennetts five daughters if we were only going to hear about four of them. This is why people complain that Jane uses too many characters.

    • @amyautor3578
      @amyautor3578 3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      I think she is just always in her room, studying, reading or whatever. It was said at the beginning, that she likes to do so. Thus, Mary is kind of the opposite of Kitty and Lydia, whose highest aim is to marry well. I must admit this seems highly sympathetic to me!

    • @MiaRut92
      @MiaRut92 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      It is a known way to write reserved characters, we are supposed to notice her being overshadowed at every turn by her prettier sisters, thus rarely mentioned.

    • @merlewilleke2417
      @merlewilleke2417 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      i think it fits the background of the family, that there is five daughters and no son, after they tried hard to have a son, and adding to the desperation to get all daughters married. Also it fits Mary’s character to be not around her family much since she is so different to them. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @cherryxx8315
      @cherryxx8315 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It’s about how she always gets overlooked- she probably prefer it that way as well considering she like to read her books in the solidarity of her chambers- cause of her ‘prettier’ and more outgoing sisters.

    It’s interesting to see the use of ‘condescension’ as a natural part of someone of the upper class being civil to someone beneath them. Whereas now the word has evolved to have a negative connotation of arrogance & rudeness in modern society.

      There was an enormous disparity in wealth, and most people were dependent on the good will and patronage of the upper classes. This power often corrupted many of the wealthy, leading them to become inconsiderate and callous in their dealings with the poor. Thus amiable and kindly behavior, by a wealthy person when dealing with his dependets was considered to be praise worthy.

    Wonderful reader 😊 I really like this last chapter, where Ms. Austen gives us a glimpse of the Darcy's married life. Most romances, and all film adaptations of P&P, just take us up to the wedding. It's enough to let us assume they're happily ever after, but I love her generosity in giving us playful, clever confirmation.

    This book has one of the most satisfying endings of all the books I have read. The fact that they overcame so many obstacles and true character is the basis of their affection and happiness is so wonderful that it lights up my heart!
    Do I dare to hope for the same? Jane Austen does inspire it.
    Though she didn't end up with a lover of her own, her encouragement to thousands of others is truely inspiring and the lessons she teaches worth reflection and application. I have come to value real character in the men around me and at least in part I can thank Jane Austen for that. Maybe the good sense she inspires will also aid me one day in acheiving a happy marriage. Maybe I will end up with a country Clergyman like so many of her heroines have. ❤😂

    I'm only to chapter 26 thus far, but this literary work is so very enjoyable! The humor is balanced so nicely with true observations about human behavior and character. The line just read, after Charotte has been married and Elizabeth is exchanging letters with her, Elizabeth continues corespondence despite loss of intimacy as friends, writing not for as things were, but "in the memory of how things once were." I've lived in such a manner for the past 8 years, I have relocated to a new abode after dwelling there for only 1-2 years, and though very intimate friendships were made in while in each place, there is a chord that is strained if not snapped after a certain period of length. Try to remain in touch as you may, it is more for the "memory of what was" more than the present state of being, for they have learned to live without you, and you them, sad indeed as it is.

    Here's how to hold your place more easily:
    Add "&t=hms" to the TH-cam address. h = hours( which you won't need to type if you haven't listened an hour yet), m = minutes, and s = seconds. If you stop, for example, at 5 hours, 6 minutes, and 10 seconds, you'd type "&t=5h6m10s" and hit enter so your browser goes to that page. Then bookmark the page.
    By doing so, you can go directly to where you left off from your bookmarks, and if a video gets removed, you can hover your cursor over the link to see where you'd start if it pops back up again.

    This is so, so incredible. I took to the internet with an unquenchable need for the original story after I've seen the remake featuring zombies, too far away from actual bookstores etc and too excited to wait for time to come to buy the book. Of course I knew a full, free version of it would obviously not be available, but I wanted whatever the internet has to offer nonetheless.
    And here this jewel popped up. It is the best thing to possibly ever happen to me, being exposed to Austen by such a lovely, mellifluous voice with perfect pacing and quite a funny voice for Mr Collins, among others. So thanks, to whoever this brilliance was the cause of.

    I saw the movie about 15 years ago, never read it until now, reads very much like the movie, good film adaptation. The feeling reading was same as watching, the title could easily be Mr. Darcey and Elizabeth, the story around those 2 is top notch reading, great character development with Darcey's letter but rest of the novels characters good but a different level. Anyone else feel Jane focusing around them is what makes the book a classic?
