  • In this video I talk about my interaction with a few divers with completely different personalities. I discus how I deal with these types of people and also show some amazing footage of my technical CCR dives at a Quarry located in Ottawa, Ohio. Enjoy!

Steve, this video is well done and your insight is much appreciated. My son, Jonathan (Basil Grown Underwater diver) and I will be at the quarry in a few weeks for a weekend of diving to tend to Jason. Jonathan adopted him this year and he wants to make sure that he looks his best for Gilboa divers when the season begins. I love the off / early season diving there due to the amazing visibility. I've had the pleasure of diving with you in the past and Jonathan is hoping to dive with you and your son this year either at Gilboa or Crusty's. Keep up the great work with the videos! We have both enjoyed watching them throughout the winter!! We've stayed local during the off-season and a week and a half ago the local quarry that we dove had decent viz with temps in the low 40's at 30 feet. Jonathan is loving his new drysuit and he is very thankful to Chris & Jerra from Mars Scuba / Steel City Scuba for finding one that fits a small-framed 13 year old. He's also grateful for the instructors at Mars Scuba / Steel City Scuba for training him to properly and safely use his drysuit. He's excited to now be able to join me and the rest of his dive buddies in the water throughout the entire year. See you at the quarry!!

Loved the video. I have been to Gilboa once, I live in Tennessee but have family in Ohio. I actually changed dive shop and from PADI to SSI for the ego thing you discussed in this video. I made Master diver in my first 9 months and am very proud of it. My goal is to be a Dive Guide with SSI. I want to be able to help new divers any way I can so they don’t have to deal with the egos. Thanks for the video and laying it out the way you did.

One of my first dives at gilboa was with Steve. He hopped in with my me and my buddy. Afterwards he gave me some pointers that helped me be a better diver. I agree with him, there are tons of people willing to help and let you dive with them but there's also a bunch that have a huge ego and forgot where they came from.

I’m always open to learning, I’ve brought that mindset over from my athlete days. Other divers have been great helping me out after I stepped away for almost 10 years. I’m taking the DM course right now and I enjoy taking everything in from whoever will pass along the knowledge.

Hey Steve, I was there this weekend and I think met the guy you're talking about... super nice guy... drove up from St Louis to dive with a group and none of them showed... I took him on a dive over in the shallow side after he dived with that first group on the deep side (and probably was his third dive of the day after he had dived with another couple on shallow) ...he's just getting started with the twins. Anyway, nice vid... spot on with the "diver ego" types... love the shots down in the deep end with the cloudy bottom... hopefully run into you again down at Gilboa, I'd like to get you're take on your rebreather. Take care! Best Regards, Brando

It's unfortunate but the ego driven scuba diver is common. In fact, in my early days of diving it gave me a bad impression of the sport when I was looking for advice. However, after I gained more experience, I realized that it was easy to just ignore them and move on. I've encountered far more good people diving than I have the those that are ego driven.

Since you stated you work at the quarry, do you expect solo dives to be allowed on the deep side ever? Also, how do you like the Choptima?

"Ego" kills (not just the individual but historically can also result in the death of others), and exactly the same as in aviation, has absolutely no place in diving.

I’m not a diver and I don’t know how this video got recommended to me but with the few diving videos I’ve seen I just don’t understand why people feel the need to big brother any diver they disagree or don’t like. If someone is inexperienced with equipment give them some help and tips. If that woman was so upset that he asked to dive with them she should have just said no I don’t feel comfortable with you diving with us because you are trying out new equipment there’s no need to be an asshole

It’s ok to have a little ego but when you think you are Gods gift to diving then it’s time to get another attitude

Everyone has a little ego Ivory, we’re not talking about the average diver who takes pride in the sport. Specifically, I am talking about those that one up named drop and criticize or belittle those who are honestly trying. I am talking about those that are driven by their ego to the point where it can put them and people around them in danger. we all have ego lol I’m talking about when it becomes toxic
