However, some refereeing decisions overshadowed what was otherwise a top performance from England, as there was a contentious England penalty vs Netherlands, as well as a ghost foul in the build-up to England’s goal.

Neutrals, Dutch supporters and even English supporters didn't want the ref on this match and it really showed.
This ref was convicted for matchfixing in the past. Why the hell is he allowed to ref a semi on this championship? That's crazy.
@@seppa193 the only reason he's still in the game is that he testified against the main culprits in the matchfixing case
No he wasn’t. I don’t know if you all read the same headline or something but he was suspended for having money sent to him. He was actually the whistle blower on a match fixing set up. There was no proof ever of him fixing a match. It’s not fair to keep repeating the same thing you heard the guy down the pub say after 12 pints, without bothering to find out what happened.

I'm English....and no way was that a penalty.
thats whz zoure not a referee. As a defender you just know not to go towards the ball with the bottom of the foot. Its dangerous play it always was dangerous play ande its always been a foul so theres no discussion at all. You just dont know the rules in im german i was rooting for the netherlands but i saw it and said im sorry netherlands but thats a penalty
It’s a foul outside the box …it’s a foul inside the box…simple
It was a penalty.
VAR is such a big disadvantage for defenders. There’s no way to challenge shots anymore, striker can just yolo it. The defender can’t be 0,1 second late. It’s an unfair disadvantage with always the biggest punishment possible (penalty). It’s not balanced anymore. The lightest brush on the face is looked at by the VAR when it’s inside the penalty box where this is ignored everywhere else on the field
You might be English but you certainly ain't no ref lad😅 Kane got the ball, and he was kicked in the foot.
Virgil van Dijk (Dutch captain) said the ref was gone immediately and not giving Virgil a handshake after the match. Very, very weird.

@@claudiukulcsar456 The UEFA should have never chosen this ref b/c of what he has done in the past. This is where the problems start. England reached finals bc they played countries like ukraine, denmark & slovakia

Honestly, with VAR scrutinizing every single thing going on it might be a good idea to have a look at how we give penalties in general. it's just happening too much right now where a 0-10% chance of even shooting on goal becomes a 70-80% chance of scoring one from a penalty for the most minor fouls.
Why not use the same idea we have for red/yellow cards now? Denying an obvious scoring chance would still be a penalty kick . but maybe a slightly less harsh punishment for anything other than that. Like a corner kick from the edge of the box or something similar.
Yeah, just like any other sport does. The rules of football are dumb as fuck.
That's actually a pretty good idea. How is a situation judged with respect to how high the chance of scoring was? Some sort of xG statistic calculated on the fly? That may be a bit odd and not very transparent.
There used to be a time where teams were awarded an indirect free kick inside the penalty box for minor fouls. Just reimplement that rule.
Agreed! Iv been saying they need to use an "in the box foul" which is different from a penalty. There are situations where freekicks happen in the box, but so rare.
It's really the players who are to blame...they know when they've fouled, dived, hand-balled, but they'd never admit it.
I mentioned the (looked like to me ) penalty which was not given to Germany in extra time against Spain. The English ref Anthony Taylor refused to give a penalty after the ball hit the arm of Cucurella. Many said he should have gone to the VAR. It certainly looked like one, but EUFA apparently backed him up. (When Spain went on to beat France Cucurella was booed every time he touched the ball).
Getting back to penalties tho', it's said that 85% land in the back of the net. The bullshit about the goalie to more or less to be stationary on the line until the ball is hit is bollocks. (I liked the good old days of Dudek or "wobbly knees" Grobbelaar). Maybe one idea might to place the penalty spot further back 13 or 14m instead of 11 m.

I don't think so. England was better in the 1st half, the Netherlands were better in the 2nd. A draw after 90 minutes would've been the propper result. German commentators were really happy with the refereeing. Especially, they pointed out that it is a good thing to use the VAR to check penalties. This is something they wished for the Germans game to. So, I mean there was a challenge without contact to the ball, therefore, a possible foul. At the end, post match you can always judge the decisions (e.g. England loosing because of not having a penalty). The referee makes the call and thats the game. It is tough. It is the same story Spain vs. Germany. The Germans did not get their penalty because they were not using the VAR. So tell me what is "fair". Always subject to perspective!
The penalty was in the park of 'could be given as there was contact'. My issue is with the consistency of the var usage. In the closing minutes, Ake gor hugged to the floor at a corner. Var stayed silent.
And there was the possible hands ball before the penalty that could've at least been looked at by the ref.
And there were 2 or 3 more calls that were game changing throughout.

He was clearly too close to the advancing player to put his studs up to him in this way.

As an England fan, I appreciate your thoughts. Its going to be a hard game but I think Spain could well under estimate England.
Spain I hope is gone win .The best team .
@@user-ky9px1po1g That's OK. You can hope any team wins, that's your choice. I will agree that Spain have been the best team in the tournament. But as an Englishman, I'm hoping England can do enough to win the final.
Studs up.If that was open field play it would be a freekick.Ref can't give a freekick for the attacking team in the box( as far as Im aware),so it unfortunately has to be called a penalty
100% right. Anywhere else on the pitch and people would scream for a free kick so why not a penalty. Even after the goal they still had plenty of time to win the game but did nothing,
You’re absolutely correct
wrong, ref didnt give it initially so in open play it wouldnt have been reviewed by VAR. That said i still wouldnt call it a foul. That said again i do belive there has to be a bit more on a pen as its so gamechanging, noone cares about 1 or 2 wrong calls in the middle of the field so we can show more leniency there
@peterdue7676 no not wrong, just the ref may have missed it. So yes var was used to pick it up ,but on viewing it is obvious to the ref that he did miss it
@peterdue7676 no not wrong, just the ref may have missed it. So yes var was used to pick it up ,but on viewing it is obvious to the ref that he did miss it
SAKA hands the ball 5 seconds b4 the clash between Kane and Dumfriess how did Var not see this?
With the penalty what is the difference between that and lets say the goalkeeper fouling bringing him down after the ball had gone. So he takes it around the goalie but with a real bad heavy touch so imagine would be a goal kick. The goalie never touches the ball, play goes around him, but follows through making contact.
oh so if Romanians (like myself) call out the same referee before AND after the match for not giving a red or at least a yellow to Dumfries, Netherlands fans were telling us to stop crying, BUT NOW.. NOW it's unacceptable, hypocrites :^)
Dutch fans do not tell romanians to stop crying, we do not pay attention to you at all
@@jvh58 Karma exists all im saying Ahole go cry me a river
As a Dutch, I agree Dumfries deserved yellow. BUT even if you would’ve gotten a free kick and scored I’d still be 1-3 at the end of the day, we played way better then the Romanians, it was an almost guaranteed win. Now with the English it was 50/50, really tight so one penalty/free kick can change everything.
@@jvh58 fking savage! lol
Fair point, but most people are hypocrites. That's not unique to Dutch people.
I dont get why everyone keeps saying about the penalty "what can a defender do there?" Like it's some impossible to answer question. The answer is , do the exact same thing Dumfries did but get the ball first. Dumfries put his foot up too late and got the player. And worst of all he showed studs, that is a foul anywhere else on the pitch so its a pen. People just dont like seeing pentalties, so they try to find reasons for it to not be a penalty
Great neutral commentary and summary!
Adrian do you think this game was should have had Artur Soares Dias as ref?
This was the first match my mom and I watched in full, and even I knew Kane shouldn't have been a penalty. I'm willing to be lenient with how that could have hurt a bit, yet damn. This ref should've been banned for life rather than six months back in 2005, yet clearly UEFA loves to give officials layers of plot armor.

Late, high, studs up. Its a foul every day of the week
Loving the salt
At first i thought it wasn't a penalty either, until i saw how Dumpries went into the challenge. His foot didn't seek to kick through the ball and instead his studs are up and his follow through also falls into Kane's leg. UEFA clarified and said normally it wouldn't be a foul, but it was deemed to have been reckless and dangerous play which is a punishable offense. It was a 50/50 call but I at least like UEFA giving an explanation for the call, rather than leaving us not understanding why it was called.
I feel that there's a bunch of cases where if you look normally you don't necessarily think "foul" but then if you play it repeatedly at x0.25 speed then it looks bad.
Which means that the bias is: which situations do you replay 5x for the judge at x0.25 speed, and which situations are just ignored and aren't replayed at all.
@@lightworker2956 I mean that's true too. I don't mind them checking but I guess consistency needs to be more of a thing with VAR

Wrong
It was offside too before the penalty but this didnt showed on ther VAR
The referee had previously been convicted of match fixing. Is such a referee still allowed to referee a professional match? And then a semi-final. What use are FairPlay rules, prices and slogans then? And it wasn't a penalty (even in England, chastened defenders say that on TV channels), because it was a block and Kane had already taken the shot (it was his swing, not a kick from Dumfries, so it was theater from Kane). but to go one step further, and this is hardly mentioned anywhere, but this was pointed out by former top referee Erikkson (Denmark): Saka made hands just prior to Kane's shot. Kane hit the ball to Kane and he struck out. The referee should have just blown the whistle there. Could VAR have deliberately left out this image of the handball? Or was that referee doing match fixing again? And why was he off the field so quickly after the match? Also unusual. In the 2022 World Cup for the Dutch Team out due to a handball from Messi (unpunished but later match winner), in the 2014 World Cup against Spain an unjustified penalty (was the Spaniard who tapped De Vrij?!?), but fortunately not decisive. This takes away the appeal of watching football. Maybe football should become like golf, in that you play with a handicap. and we immediately know which countries have privileged positions.
People saying NL was robbed - did you even watch the game? England dominated possession and created more chances. What did the Dutch actually do going forward? Other than a spectacular solo goal from Simons they offered nothing.
What's your point? Celtic beat Barca 2-1 even tho all they did was defend...
And yet England needed a penalty which wasn't one to equalize...
Slovakia, Austria and Slovenia all dominated England and lost so what’s your point?

I personally don't think that was a penalty but as an English person we had plenty of decisions go against us in the past so perhaps it's karma

Nah Kane just shot like 2 milliseconds earlier. And the touch was minimal, Kane just dropped himself.
English media has been houding this referee all week long. This man didnt want to give them any reason to abuse him even more and gave every 50/50 call to the english. Embarrasing display from this referee who clearly cannot handle any amount of pressure and of Uefa for allowing him to referee this match instead of just giving Orsato or Marciniak a call (whoever doesnt do the final)
That wasnt a penalty, crybabies.
The ball was already shot and is not consider a fault.
Always the same protestant trickery.
There was contect genius and Dumfries had no business having his leg so up

The Dutch are historically protestant too, you absolute melt. You really have no idea what you are talking about, do you?
So people talking about Netherlands robbed and the crazy outcry yet i didn't really see the same for spain handball, odd
Btw to anyone saying fullkrug was offside, only his hand was offside and hand up until the shoulder is not accounted for offsides, Taylor should have gone to VAR and seen in himself to silence any doubts but what happened is ignorance and a clear pen ignored for Germany

Luke Shaw....low profile...but he is England best player in this tournament. Unsung hero indeed.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Even the English ITV commentators all said this is never a penalty!! What a pity for the Dutch 🇳🇱!!😂😂
German ref didn't see handball in the box from an English player just before Kane dove, just before English second goal he whistled for a dive from an English player while the Dutch had a dangerous outbreak. Ref literally created both English goals and the last 30 minutes of the match was like a personal vendetta against the Dutch from the ref. Never seen something like that, ever.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
And to add, how can this ref play this game when Bellingham was fined for critiquing him on the match fix scandal. And I read the ref has a Dutch wife. The more I look into him the worse it gets.

Xavi Simons fouled Declan Rice to take the ball for the first goal. Clear trip and steps on his foot before taking the ball from him. And NOBODY is talking about it even after the replay showed it clear as day. Felt like I was going mad that the commentators didn’t mention it. England’s penalty was not the right call either but in this case 2 wrongs made a right. On balance, even with the incorrect penalty call, Netherlands still had by some margin the favourable referee decisions. They just cry a lot and for some reason neutrals like them because they play in orange?? Idk
Can we get rid of VAR already? It adds nothing but another station for mistakes to be made
Difference between Spain and England is that Spain worked very hard, has a wide variety of talent and strikes early in the first minutes. England rely too much on luck, every single match they had someone scoring a goal to save them in the last minute of every match.
Overall this match will hit hard, but my prediction is a Spanish victory. England’s luck will run out, Spain’s structure is just too much at this point as they managed to strike down hard hitters like Germany and France, locking out key players of said teams to ensure a lockdown
"England rely too much on luck" ah yes, it's all luck that we stay in the match until the final moment, definitely not "hard work"

Keoman will be remembering dragging David platt down when clean through only to receive a yellow card then scored the winner eliminating England from Euro 92. @dylanvogler2165 I don't think it was a penalty at all look at the English players around kane at the time none of them were screaming penalty that tells you all you need to know. But that aside England were by far the better team.
As a Dutch supporter, I am at peace with the result. Here in the Netherlands, we don't see it as a disgrace to lose to England. However, I do find it really sad that, not for the first time, we had such a biased referee against us. I really wish our boys could get a good referee during such important games. Besides, I think it would have been more enjoyable for the English to win in a game where the refereeing is fair, instead of having such a terrible referee who gets talked about a lot afterwards. Having a referee who is biased against us at a crucial point in a tournament for the second time diminishes the viewing pleasure for us as supporters. Next time, I really hope we don't get robbed, regardless of the outcome of the game. This way, football gets ruined!
That kind of foul is usually not a pen, but some ref may have a different opinion. I think the ref was happy to continue play until VAR intervened. But why intervene? Either way it was not a clear and obvious error.
100% robbed, Kane hit Dumfries when following through on his shot and it should already have been a foul two seconds ealier when Saka handballed. I guess handball doesn't count against the Netherlands. Messi played volleyball against us at the world cup and everyone acted like they didn't see it.
Also nearly all the 50/50 calls went in Englands favour and the England celebration took a good couple of minutes off the clock yet the ref flew his whistle way too soon anyway, then he walked straight to the tunnels. Suspicious at best.
Scored in the 90th minute, 2 minutes added on kicked off 93rd minute blew for full time just after 95th minute. Better team won end of discussion. Regarding the pen, anywhere else on the pitch a foul is given.

I think with the challenge on Kane it comes down to where he was in his shooting motion (not finished) and the defender coming in way late. Yes, he has the right to challenge, but he was too late and should have pulled away from the attempted tackle. If they hit knee on knee about a quarter second later its a goal kick. Just my 2 cents I support Liverpool and will be greatly amused when England get absolutely pumped in the final.
Agreed. Not to mention, he went into the tackle with his studs up. Reckless. Always a pen.
@@tiagothinks "Always a pen." The contact was AFTER the ball had left Kane's foot so it did not affect the shot at all, and the contact was initiated mostly by Kane's follow through. @macgp44 okay, so defenders can just stick their legs out with the studs up to discourage someone from taking a shot, ya? Doesn't matter if it was after. No, we were the better team on the night. If we'd had a better conversion rate it could've been at least 3-1 tbh. I also think the offside decision was wrong and however dubious you find the penalty (I don't personally), we've suffered from so much dodgy refereeing (if you feel that it's a poor call) over the years it's about time the tables were turned tbh. I've been extremely critical of Southgate and England over the past 4 tournaments, the first half yesterday was the first time I've watched a Southgate side and been truly impressed, the second half not so much but they got the result. Watkins finish was quality (helped by a clean through ball from Palmer), you can't deny that, even Koeman didn't.
The offside was not wrong. The offside rule is one of the few rules that needs no discussion, and technology can very easily just say it was, or wasn’t offside. And it was. Should they change the boundary of offside, imo yes. However, as the rules stand, it was offside.
It was a pen, The Netherlands player made contact with the foot, plus the Netherlands player didn't win the ball.
Also if that happened outside the box 9/10 that will be given as a free kick so it should a pen should be given in box
In the match against Romania, the same referee favored the Dutch team by not awarding a penalty to Romania, not giving a red card to a Dutch player, and interrupting an attack when Romania had a chance to score at 0-1. This time, however, karma seemed to turn against the Netherlands.
