- When the first Trabant was launched in 1957, it could hold its own against West German models. Its 18 horsepower may not have been a threat to the Goggomobil or the VW Bug, but the latter certainly didn't leave its Eastern cousins in the dust.

I loved my Trabant, drove it from 1995-1999 -.-' perfect for winter. took a few dozen miles to get warm inside, but...
Are these still made? How can you get spare parts?

It is best to study a good example. Some fools examine those who are in bad shape and tarnish this myth. But a real Trabant is beautiful. You want to travel with it as much as you can and never get stuck on the road. I would never want to get out of a good Trabant.
The very last Trabis were fitted with then W German VW 4 bangers of around 1.1L
At 3:08 you can see the mounting points for the rear petrol tank. Which means this 2 stroke trabi has 4 stroke floor panels. Which means this is one from the very last 601s.
He said it was a 1990 unit and the 600s were meant to have ended in 1989 for the 4 stroke 1.1s

I did it on Saturday. I ended up driving around for three and half hours as there was some kind of anti Nazi protest blocking all the roads lol.

I drove from los Angeles to San Francisco in a blue 1974 trabant 601 and I loved every millisecond of that trip
The last Trabant rolled off the assembly line in April of 1991. These last units were heavily upgraded to meet European smog emission, and safety standards.
After a Trabant has been so heavily upgraded, when does it stop being a Trabant?
It is a Trabi if it meets at least five of these criteria:
#1 A single body steel frame.
#2 An outer skin made of fiber re-enforced plastic.
#3 Front wheel drive & rear wheel steering.
#4 Columnar transmission shifting with at least four gears including reverse.
#5 Air cooled engine with at least 24 HP.
#6 A maximum unloaded weight of no more than 1400 pounds.
#7 ~It uses separate ignition coils instead of a distributor~
On number 7 the point being that the Trabi automobile does not depend on any electronics for its vehicular operation.
Ive got everything except the rear wheel steering? Whats up with that? Mine is from 1990
My 1.1 kombi would not be a trabant then. And it certainly is one. All electrical systems on it are incredibly shoddily build though. Even the automatic choke does only work when the right stars are aligned. It does keep up with modern traffic though. And it had the exact same panels as the older two stroke models.
In Poland we called it Ford Karton(cardboard).
My lord this car is in amazing condition. But no wonder, it only has 1500 kilometers on it!!!

I think you could put a motorbike or ATV type engine and keep the same basic design. Couldn't pass safety standards though

You bought a working example very cheaply. This year I saw 5 well-restored Trabants selling for 20k euros or more. Well restored ones are valuable. However, there are many Trabants that are in poor condition and need to be restored. In fact, it's okay if the engine is not running, and it will not be difficult to start it.

I saw a bunch of these in Berlin a couple years ago. They are far worse then this makes them look. Even the East German leader had a Volvo

You should definitely buy one. Well restored ones are valuable. This year I saw 5 Trabants selling for 20k Euros and more. There was even a news line in Germany. The article said 'HURRY TO BUY TRABANT IT WILL BE MUCH MORE VALUABLE'
Even small hatchbacks with air conditioning can be had for 3k Euro, in no way would I bother with such antiquated technology.

In fact, the metal under the body was of very high quality and did not rust very easily. The metal used was definitely of higher quality than the Mercedes'. It was also a quality car. 2:43 Check how well the door closes.

In all honesty, the French had a few similarly outdated cars in the late 80s and early 90s that were more or less only in production because of their cult following - just take the 2 CV and the Renault 4! The VW Beetle wasn't exactly state of the art anymore either when it went out of production, although it did receive a few major engine updates during its run.
Ragnar8504 it's insane how long the VW beetle was produced. Designed in national socialist Germany to fulfill a "people's car" need the same idea the East Germans had with the Trabants and produced until 2003

I had over 10 Trabants and I think you are wrong saying that because they are lovely cars, but only people who never had one can say what you said ;)

My dad had one, one stupid horrible car, something was always flying from the engine upwards and me and my sister were going after them. It was breaking all the time and that engine sound was horrible. My dad got sick of it and sold in for nothing just to get rid of it.

E I N S while I do think Tranant's are a cool eccentricity, those big trucks have a lot more uses. So that was kind of a silly comeback. Anyway, remember, it takes class to respect the classics.
For the time it was first designed it was actually half decent but the problem is they never updated it further
Why do costly revisions and updates to keep with the times when there's a waiting list anyways? People who got their's before yours would be rightfully jealous if you got one with modern inclusions.
