Come along with me as I show you how we are living out the dream of creating a family compound. [A single piece of land that multiple members of the same family call home]. It was a once-in a-life time opportunity to purchase this property a few years ago and we've been renovating it ever since! In this video, I'm taking you on a tour of the cottage house, which is actually the original home on the property. My sister and her family are getting ready to move in so I have a few loose ends to finish up.
If you're new to this channel, I'm Lena. Welcome to Flipping Gorgeous. I'm a realtor turned renovator and I help educate people on how to purchase a home and fix it up! Thank you for watching. Your support means everything!

Next door to me is my moms house that I grew up in. I moved here (next door to her) in 1991. My brother built a house behind hers in 1994. We now have a total of 50+ acres. My brother has 2 kids in their 20’s. They will build homes on this land someday. Today would have been my dad’s 85th birthday. He passed in January. We realized in his last years how vital it is to have family nearby, while still honoring space and freedom. Being family we are like minded. So there’s no boom boom stereo late hours. I can dog sit for my family while they’re on vacation. I know who should and shouldn’t be coming up driveway. There’s millions of pluses with very few minus if any minus. None come to mind.

Wow, that's incredible! On my mom’s side of the family there was a similar situation. As a kid I always thought it was so cool! They all had their houses but plenty of land and privacy. I’m sorry for your loss. My mom passed 11 years ago. It puts a lot into perspective. Obviously, we are working on a much small portion of land, but I’m so thankful to have family close by.

We have been questioned and somewhat criticized by people that just don’t get it, mostly people that don’t get along with family. You and your family will always cherish this decision. This was common where I grew up (small town TN), many extended families lived in separate homes on the same land. I grew up next to my grandparents and on back of the property was a shared small farm and a big mechanic’s garage and welding shop…all inside the city limits…even had pigs on the very back of the land. Growing up, all I wanted to do was get to a city! I’m still a city girlie but appreciate how much I was grounded by growing up the way I did.

I would love to do this with friends that have some common lifestyles. I am single and have many single friends in my age group (50's mostly) and would really benefit from having common land with a lot of common areas that we can each kind of take the lead on keeping nice, while we actually outsource a good amount of maintenance and share the expenses.
Then of course each of us have our own private living spaces.

@@flippinggorgeous Btw, you are so smart to provide a place for family. *Another idea: an elevator bed.* See tiny house vids or vanlife vids, if you are not familiar with them. Better than a Murphy bed for freeing up the space for exercise or for a child's play area. Murphy beds trap the moisture in the sheets which we are supposed to air out daily by pulling the covers and sheets back. Plus if you get bed bugs, they have easy access w/ a Murphy bed.

We have one in rural Arkansas on a mountain ridge, 50 acres of paradise. My brother and wife, my 95 yr old Mom and me and hubs bought it in 2016, way before the economy went south. It's paid for. Beautiful homes we built ourselves. It's the way to go. We have plenty of space so we're not on top of each other. If we don't want to see someone, we just stay away, but we love each other and do holidays and things together all the time. Respecting someone's space keeps it civil. Now my kids are in their early twenties and I have one in his mid twenties I keep telling them I’m going to buy a piece of land with lots of acreage and everyone could build their house on it if they wanted to!! Even before I had kids I wanted to get like minded people in one huge property mine was vegetarians and everyone responsible for helping with the garden and everyone lives their own lives but you have people who are close because they have same interests and they are helping with building a big beautiful property!! The property has a large pole barn and a shed on it too, and where I live has minimal zoning law's, so tiny houses and/or travel trailers/5th wheels wouldn't be a problem, if a family member was to find themselves in a situation of need. I dont know if anyone has mentioned this, but if the laundry was turned around so it would open into what im guessing is a hallway, then that could be a cute little bedroom for the little ones. Then there could be a closet placed where the swinging door exit is in the master bedroom since there is already going to be a french door exit next to it. Then you have 2 bedrooms! Its probably already been considered, but just thiught I'd mention it. Have good one. Love this video!

What you’re describing is quite common in our area. I live in rural Oklahoma. It’s cattle ranching for the most part. A lot of the time if land comes available either next to the “home place” or very near, the children will buy it to either build on or remodel the existing home. Also my brother has cancer and is divorced so he is pretty much on his own dealing with treatments, his kids and their dog who is alone much of the time or in a kennel. I used to have relatives who had a lot of land I could have parked a camper, RV or trailer on to live in, but they are gone and everything is way too expensive and you have to deal with bureaucracy. That you found a place with buildings and have room for more is fantastic for your family. It really is the way to go. IKEA Pax wardrobes make excellent floor to ceiling room dividers that would also be functional. One closet side could face the “master” and the other the newly fashioned toddlers bedroom for closet storage for both. If wide enough, leave a separation between the two for a door way- diy sliding barn door could be adorable? - and voila! Two bedrooms plus closets in the same large space :)

I love how warm hearted you are, wanting your family to move in on the property with you and doing all this work for them! You are so kind.
If I were you, I would take the cabinets out of the laundry room and make that the toddler’s bedroom. Although I don’t think I saw windows, so it might feel a little cave-like. Then they can have the bedroom, put the crib for the newborn in there (lower chance of SIDS when children under one sleep in the same room as parents anyway) keep the living room the living room. They can do laundry at your house until you build onto this house potentially. When the baby is older, the kids can share the room. Just my two cents. Love what you’re doing for your family!

You could put bookshelves up to block off a space for the babies where the current bed is now. Then it wouldn’t look like your kids sleep in the living room.

Just a suggestion in wvat is the bedroom now. Out a murphy bed they hacecreally nice regular mattress ones by the tv where the French doors are. Then out a wall up on the closet side make a baby bedroom on that side. Then the other living area is all theirs.

RE: room dividers….My sister and I both needed office space, and so we took our third bedroom and divided it into two “rooms” within one. We used three pieces of paintable plywood standing on end and created a “T” shape. We connected them with screws and then trimmed them out with trim and crown molding. We created a shelf on top of the whole T where knick knacks can set, if desired. We put felt on the bottom of this fake wall so that there is no damage to the floor. We attached it to the top of a window header for stability, and that is the only place it is attached, so that someday it can be easily removed. Anyway, just an idea for a temporary way of dividing your spaces. Something like that could work in both the living area and the large bedroom if a nursery is needed.

It is a beautiful idea to have your sister close. Well, this is an idea the place has a long, long living room. You perfectly can do there the kids bedroom in front of the bathroom, where they can have their little beds and a cute decoration and few toys, and your sister can have her master bedroom with that view to the garden and their closets and privacy, she can accommodate a mobile wall to make there their kids playroom space in front of the bedroom door because it is a large room too and there are enough space for all that without sacrifice the living-room and their privacy .

It's great that you can help out family and the little house could work on a short terms basis for your sistere. However, I think it is too small for a soon to be family of four. @8:32, I would make that into a cot/bed niche for the toddler and not turn it into a dressing room. That way the bedroom won't be entirely taken up with beds plus a baby cot.

    • @flippinggorgeous
      @flippinggorgeous  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I know you don't want to put more money into it but given how close the french doors are, I would change the door in the kitchen into a window and run more cabinets along that wall. It will give several feet more counter space. I would also change the french doors so it swings out rather than in. That way, they can have the door open and possibly add one of those roller screens so they can get air. I would also consider a Murphy Bed in the living room area. That way they can flip it up and use the space during the day without having to redo the bedding all the time.

Right now, I’m not liking it, but as my husband and I get older we might move on my stepdaughter’s property. She has a few acres and already has her brother in law there.
