Come along with me as I show you how we are living out the dream of creating a family compound. [A single piece of land that multiple members of the same family call home]. It was a once-in a-life time opportunity to purchase this property a few years ago and we've been renovating it ever since! In this video, I'm taking you on a tour of the cottage house, which is actually the original home on the property. My sister and her family are getting ready to move in so I have a few loose ends to finish up.
If you're new to this channel, I'm Lena. Welcome to Flipping Gorgeous. I'm a realtor turned renovator and I help educate people on how to purchase a home and fix it up! Thank you for watching. Your support means everything!

Next door to me is my moms house that I grew up in. I moved here (next door to her) in 1991. My brother built a house behind hers in 1994. We now have a total of 50+ acres. My brother has 2 kids in their 20’s. They will build homes on this land someday. Today would have been my dad’s 85th birthday. He passed in January. We realized in his last years how vital it is to have family nearby, while still honoring space and freedom. Being family we are like minded. So there’s no boom boom stereo late hours. I can dog sit for my family while they’re on vacation. I know who should and shouldn’t be coming up driveway. There’s millions of pluses with very few minus if any minus. None come to mind.
Wow, that's incredible! On my mom’s side of the family there was a similar situation. As a kid I always thought it was so cool! They all had their houses but plenty of land and privacy. I’m sorry for your loss. My mom passed 11 years ago. It puts a lot into perspective. Obviously, we are working on a much small portion of land, but I’m so thankful to have family close by.
@@flippinggorgeous my brother is purchasing 15 more acres next month to continue growing the compound. We have been questioned and somewhat criticized by people that just don’t get it, mostly people that don’t get along with family. You and your family will always cherish this decision. Sorry to hear about your mom. May God bless you and your family on this new chapter
IF you can find work nearby?
@@stoveguy2133 I’m outside of Huntsville Alabama. I think it’s rated number 2 in nation for cost of living, top 10 for growth. There’s jobs all over this area. Many of them are government contractors. Housing boom still strong here
Wow! This sounds amazing
Once upon a time it was the norm for homes to be multi-generational. Grandparents were able to live out their days surrounded by their children and grandkids.
I’m realizing how important this is as a mom of 3 young kids.
American individualism is not working. I’m glad people are going back to living communally with their family.
Multi-generational living is still the norm in many parts of the world. Just not the US lol.
So...a village. We've come full circle as a society. Now we just need to make these happen everywhere.
I think more and more people are trying to do this but it’s definitely a challenge to find the space for it
We have 49 acres 5 homes on a huge homestead. Yes we all get along. Good luck.
Wow, that’s awesome!
Lena, your family are so lucky to have you! It is so kind of you and your husband to think of having your family living on your property. The cottage is perfect!
Thank you! We’be been fortunate to have people help us along the way. This is how we can pay it forward. I'm so happy to have them here! Thank you for watching 😁
This is a dream of my niece to have a family compound, especially since my generation are seniors now. She would love to be able to be close to make sure her parents and siblings are safe.
I can relate to her so much! I hope she finds a way to do it!
Big thank you for being a positive example for contemporary living -- getting back to how families once were! We may not all get along with our family members but if families can't depend upon each other, the families may break. Today's culture and our society are much worse off than ever before -- and it shows.
Thank you for watching! Family is the most important thing to me. I hope other people will be inspired by it.
I love the family compound idea, honestly have always loved the idea of owning an entire village full of God loving families and hopefully relatives! ❤️🙏
Me too. For me it will be my God loving and nature loving single friends , or even couples. Most of us are in our 50's and very social and dreading the thought of retirement that is creeping up on us. We are not ready at all and love living alone, yet would love to be a lot closer to each other and make our own little community.
I'm 75, my husband passed away 3 years ago. My granddaughter and her two children have one bedroom, and my daughter and her partner live in the other. My house is 3 bedroom, 1 bath. We live in central California, believe me houses are not cheap. I would love to have a set up like yours, but I would have to come up with a million dollars to buy it. Your second house is lovely, you have done an amazing job making it beautiful.
I would love to have a family compound to help family too.
They should put the baby in the laundry room and keep room as masters, the cottage is super cute!!!
Yes create a outside shed for extra clothes and other items. They need more storage
Agree - build a family reusable outdoor - laundry and utility building / room.
This a dream! The way family should live.
I’m starting to realize that we were meant to stay together ❤️
Completely agree 😊
I have had multiple family live with us- it’s been awesome!! You won’t regret it, so much fun having nieces and a nephew growing up around you, now that they are all grown up we have a lot of fun memories.❤
I have 5 siblings and always wanted us to live this way. I owned a 3 flat and family did live there, but payment was a misunderstanding. Now, 10 yrs later, I would do it again! We are all close and spend all holidays and weekends together.
As long as you have boundaries
Yessss
This was common where I grew up (small town TN), many extended families lived in separate homes on the same land. I grew up next to my grandparents and on back of the property was a shared small farm and a big mechanic’s garage and welding shop…all inside the city limits…even had pigs on the very back of the land. Growing up, all I wanted to do was get to a city! I’m still a city girlie but appreciate how much I was grounded by growing up the way I did.
My Aunt had a Sears house that they built in 1963. It was a small ranch . With 3 bedrooms and 1 bath .
Thank you for sharing! If hers was 1963 then this could be one too!
This idea is perfect!! If at all possible family should be together. I have an adult son, not married. There is only the 3 of us in the family and we're currently looking for a home that will fit all our needs. I'm in my 70s and eventually the home will be his. I know others who live this way and it works out well. Glad I saw your video. TFS Hugs from California * L
I’m glad you are here! Thank you for watching! I hope that you find something that could accommodate all of you. That would be wonderful
I would love to do this with friends that have some common lifestyles. I am single and have many single friends in my age group (50's mostly) and would really benefit from having common land with a lot of common areas that we can each kind of take the lead on keeping nice, while we actually outsource a good amount of maintenance and share the expenses.
Then of course each of us have our own private living spaces.
It is nice seeing someone do this with family or otherwise. This is like a 5 year goal for myself to be working towards and also dropping the idea out there to people.
That sounds like an amazing plan to work towards! I hope you find some friends who share the dream as well!
It's so smart. If you have a great relationship with your family it's the greatest thing you could do and share cost. Things are getting bad and being together is all that really matters.
The rent is really great for them 😜 (it’s free)! The housing market is so crazy that this will allow them to continue saving for the house they need!
Awesome! Such a great way to support your family and have time together. I love the cottage and what you've done with it so far. I feel like you could easily divide the current bedroom into two, if they want separate spaces for the kids, and keep the living room as is. Right off the kitchen seems more intuitively a living space for me.
That is definitely something to think about! Thank you for the input!
I agree. That small area after the sofa could be an office
area, especially if anyone worked from home.
There is enough space in bedroom you could even put up a divider wall to make 2 separate room areas for private sleep space
So true! We were discussing that today!
@@flippinggorgeous The dividing wall could be partially built with Ikea furniture used as clothes storage. Packing it with clothes would make it sound dampening. A "lift up storage bed" (with struts) would provide lots of storage.
@@flippinggorgeous Btw, you are so smart to provide a place for family. *Another idea: an elevator bed.* See tiny house vids or vanlife vids, if you are not familiar with them. Better than a Murphy bed for freeing up the space for exercise or for a child's play area. Murphy beds trap the moisture in the sheets which we are supposed to air out daily by pulling the covers and sheets back. Plus if you get bed bugs, they have easy access w/ a Murphy bed.
I think a family compound would be my dream. How lovely!
A family compound is my dream also.
I think it's a great idea and with the insanity in the world, it's good to have family close. Good luck!
We have one in rural Arkansas on a mountain ridge, 50 acres of paradise. My brother and wife, my 95 yr old Mom and me and hubs bought it in 2016, way before the economy went south. It's paid for. Beautiful homes we built ourselves. It's the way to go. We have plenty of space so we're not on top of each other. If we don't want to see someone, we just stay away, but we love each other and do holidays and things together all the time. Respecting someone's space keeps it civil. Congrats to you and your family.
That sounds incredible!
This is my dream and I rarely hear it about families moving onto one piece but it’s something I’ve always talked about since I was a teenager! (I’m 53 now). Now my kids are in their early twenties and I have one in his mid twenties I keep telling them I’m going to buy a piece of land with lots of acreage and everyone could build their house on it if they wanted to!! Even before I had kids I wanted to get like minded people in one huge property mine was vegetarians and everyone responsible for helping with the garden and everyone lives their own lives but you have people who are close because they have same interests and they are helping with building a big beautiful property!! It’s like taking a bunch of different peoples skills and helping build homes and a community!!
That would be amazing if you could do that for your children!
I think communes and family arrangements like this are the way to go.
Our friends are on a wonderful compound homesteaded by great granpa. Genius what they did and you are doing!
This is a dream of mine
I can't help but realize you are a very kind and generous person. Family means everything to you! Parents/ cousins / sisters/ brother in laws all with in helpful reach of one another. What I would give to have just one cup of coffee with my best friend of a sister. So very excited for all of you!!
Thank you so much! yes, it is by far the most important thing to me. I lost my mom 11 years ago so my siblings and dad are everything to me!
I bought a home on acreage many years ago, that I retired to in 2019. The property has a large pole barn and a shed on it too, and where I live has minimal zoning law's, so tiny houses and/or travel trailers/5th wheels wouldn't be a problem, if a family member was to find themselves in a situation of need. You never know what could happen in this day and age.
I think the pandemic taught us that you never know what to expect! Living through that experience definitely led us to buying a homestead!
This paired with a family condo in the nearest big city would be the dream 😍
Such an adorable cottage. I dont know if anyone has mentioned this, but if the laundry was turned around so it would open into what im guessing is a hallway, then that could be a cute little bedroom for the little ones. Then there could be a closet placed where the swinging door exit is in the master bedroom since there is already going to be a french door exit next to it. Then you have 2 bedrooms! Its probably already been considered, but just thiught I'd mention it. Have good one. Love this video!
What you’re describing is quite common in our area. I live in rural Oklahoma. It’s cattle ranching for the most part. A lot of the time if land comes available either next to the “home place” or very near, the children will buy it to either build on or remodel the existing home. On our ranch, my parents have a house as do my husband and myself and my brother.
Omg this is my dream too! My sister and I talk about this so much over the years! I love what you’re doing! It’s beautiful. May God continue to bless you all! This is amazing ❤🎉
Thank you for watching! I hope you and your sister get the opportunity one day!
This is such a nice idea-sometimes I wish we had this as my parents are elderly and I am their only source of help. My siblings live in other states, so it’s just me and my husband and kids to help with their needs. Also my brother has cancer and is divorced so he is pretty much on his own dealing with treatments, his kids and their dog who is alone much of the time or in a kennel. I’ve said many times I wish I could help him more. It definitely takes a village, not just with kids but the elderly as well.
I love your cottage and your compound. I would move there in a heartbeat! ❤
How wonderful to have family so close by! The cottage is adorable! I was thinking, I could live there!!!
Love that you are doing this Lena!! So happy that you will have more time with your sister while this housing market improves. Can’t wait to see the “after” after!
Thank you!! It’s come a long way! I’m excited to have her nearby every day!
I’m new to your channel. I found you three days ago, and I have been binge watching all of your videos the last three evenings.
Would enjoy seeing a full tour of the main house, and property.
Wow! Thank you so much! I guess it still shocks me that people watch 😁 I’m grateful you’re here! Working on a video now with the tour of the main house!
My family has a compound!! Best life!!
This is great 👍🏻 my husband’s family lives on a farm about an hour from us. His grandmother has a home there, as well as his parents. We own 15 acres of the farm and will eventually build out there. Being near family is so important when raising little ones.
You're so right about the importance with little ones. we didn't have family around for many years so this is a blessing to be able to do this now! best of luck with your farm! sounds amazing!
Great idea! Beautiful cottage! I am doing the same thing in Costa Rica. I bought a piece of property and will build for myself and other family members or friends as needed. I wish I was more talented in the decorating area 😁
The large long bedroom could be divided into two separate bed rooms!
Hi Lina, this is the first time I watch your channel and I love you for what you want to achieve. Having the whole family near by is the very best a person can have. It's a dream come true. God willing, they will feel so comfortable that they will not want to leave and set roots there. It will be awesome for you, your sister, parents and extended families to live in a community. If you were rated, I would give you 5 stars plus : )
We really should have done this for my parents. As it is we all live around 30 min from my parent's house and as they are now in their 80s it would have been insanely more convenient to have our parents as neighbors.
Nice cottage! I would have loved to live there with my young family next to my cool sister! Oh the money I could have saved and yes, of course, the memories!!!!
Yes! I'm hoping it will allow them to save a good amount of money and we will make some incredible memories in the process.
The French door curtains need to be put on a longer rod so curtains don’t cover any of the window area. Also rods on all windows need to be moved higher on the wall which makes rooms feel bigger too.
I think what you are doing is wonderful! I am a senior living on Social Security and rent keeps going up and the waiting list for low income seniors is long. I used to have relatives who had a lot of land I could have parked a camper, RV or trailer on to live in, but they are gone and everything is way too expensive and you have to deal with bureaucracy. That you found a place with buildings and have room for more is fantastic for your family. It really is the way to go. I remember a few years ago someone built several small houses on their property for them and their kids and I thought wow that will help the family when times get tough.
I feel for you and so many others in this situation.
Wow!!! I love your enthusiasm to live next to your sisters. I have been sooooo blessed to have a similar setup with my sisters and parents. We are the best friends.
Love that you and your sister are best friends. She and I have been through a lot and life. I’m glad that it brought us closer together. We are best friends too!
I think a family estate/compound (or farm or ranch) is wonderful! I'm a widow so this wouldn't be something I could do, but if you be got grown adult children, parents, I laws, maybe even an older single relative--what a great way to have your loved ones around you!!! So many benefits!!!
IKEA Pax wardrobes make excellent floor to ceiling room dividers that would also be functional. One closet side could face the “master” and the other the newly fashioned toddlers bedroom for closet storage for both. If wide enough, leave a separation between the two for a door way- diy sliding barn door could be adorable? - and voila! Two bedrooms plus closets in the same large space :)
Thanks for the tips! We've been looking that the PAX. She and I are planning a trip to ikea soon!
I love how warm hearted you are, wanting your family to move in on the property with you and doing all this work for them! You are so kind.
If I were you, I would take the cabinets out of the laundry room and make that the toddler’s bedroom. Although I don’t think I saw windows, so it might feel a little cave-like. Then they can have the bedroom, put the crib for the newborn in there (lower chance of SIDS when children under one sleep in the same room as parents anyway) keep the living room the living room. They can do laundry at your house until you build onto this house potentially. When the baby is older, the kids can share the room. Just my two cents. Love what you’re doing for your family!
Thank you for the kind comment! I’ve had that same thought about the laundry room but there isn’t central air in that portion of the house so it may get too hot in the summer
You could make the laundry room the toddlers/newborn room
My dream for sure. Even though we’re old now, still my dream.
You could put bookshelves up to block off a space for the babies where the current bed is now. Then it wouldn’t look like your kids sleep in the living room.
We live in a family compound in Puerto Rico! It’s Amazing!
so cool!
I've sold r.e. 39 yrs. Never have I seen such insane prices here in Phoenix. I myself am living in a home i bought in 2011 for 145k. Now worth 525k... I'm just happy i don't have a payment. Subscribed!! Timmy C Arizona
Just a suggestion in wvat is the bedroom now. Out a murphy bed they hacecreally nice regular mattress ones by the tv where the French doors are. Then out a wall up on the closet side make a baby bedroom on that side. Then the other living area is all theirs.
Murphy bed is an incredible idea! Thank you!
This is beautiful and an awesome idea to help family❤🎉
Thank you so much for watching! I'm super excited to have them.
I’m new to your channel! And man do I like what your doing! I totally agree with you on how crazy the prices of homes are and rentals are. It’s getting out of control, I’m hearing that some people are living in their cars because they can’t afford to rent. I think more people need to do what your doing. Great idea 👍💯👍
I love it! What a great idea! Your family is lucky to have you ❤
As long as you have strong family members with concrete rules. Most families would fight 24-7.
RE: room dividers….My sister and I both needed office space, and so we took our third bedroom and divided it into two “rooms” within one. We used three pieces of paintable plywood standing on end and created a “T” shape. We connected them with screws and then trimmed them out with trim and crown molding. We created a shelf on top of the whole T where knick knacks can set, if desired. We put felt on the bottom of this fake wall so that there is no damage to the floor. We attached it to the top of a window header for stability, and that is the only place it is attached, so that someday it can be easily removed. Anyway, just an idea for a temporary way of dividing your spaces. Something like that could work in both the living area and the large bedroom if a nursery is needed.
Wow! I wish I could see a picture of what you built. That sounds like a great solution for dividing my space.
@@flippinggorgeous I’d be glad to email it to you, if you like.
I grew up in a Sears house. There we no markings anywhere on the house. We bought it from the original family (their grandparents built it) so that is how we knew. Plus it was a common kit.
Thank you for sharing that info!
It is a beautiful idea to have your sister close. Well, this is an idea the place has a long, long living room. You perfectly can do there the kids bedroom in front of the bathroom, where they can have their little beds and a cute decoration and few toys, and your sister can have her master bedroom with that view to the garden and their closets and privacy, she can accommodate a mobile wall to make there their kids playroom space in front of the bedroom door because it is a large room too and there are enough space for all that without sacrifice the living-room and their privacy .
I love my 18 inch dishwasher!!!! We got a Bosch as it is QUIET and efficient! We have 4 adults full time and 1 more on the weekends, and it tackles all the dishes. We cook all the time.
Thank you for sharing!! That’s great to know that it will more than get the job done!
Pooling resources in today’s world is a great way to go as long as people have their own privacy.
Wow! Your sister is so lucky. I think the bedroom is lovely and maybe the other end of it could be for the little ones. Perfect 😁🇬🇧
I’m lucky to have her! Thank you for watching
I would love the opportunity to live in something like that
It's great that you can help out family and the little house could work on a short terms basis for your sistere. However, I think it is too small for a soon to be family of four. @8:32, I would make that into a cot/bed niche for the toddler and not turn it into a dressing room. That way the bedroom won't be entirely taken up with beds plus a baby cot.
I had that same thought! Unfortunately that room doesn't have central air so our concern is it would get too hot for their toddler but maybe we can find a solution because it would be a perfect use of space
Put a divider in the bedroom so they can all sleep in the bedroom. It seems big enough. If not, blow out the sliding door a few feet.
What a great sister/ daughter you are!
😊 thank you

I would love a family compound with my kids and their families together. We said we would do that if we won the lottery! lol.
Hello, love your video. Have you considered turning what you want the laundry room to be into a bedroom. The bedroom looks large enough to make into 2 bedrooms.
My dream is for me to have a property where my boys or any family can live on the same property. ❤️
I know you don't want to put more money into it but given how close the french doors are, I would change the door in the kitchen into a window and run more cabinets along that wall. It will give several feet more counter space. I would also change the french doors so it swings out rather than in. That way, they can have the door open and possibly add one of those roller screens so they can get air. I would also consider a Murphy Bed in the living room area. That way they can flip it up and use the space during the day without having to redo the bedding all the time.
These are great suggestions! I had the same thought about the kitchen! Taking out the door and making more space.
good job they are renting out backyard sheds in the Bay Area calif for 2,000 a month if you are lucky enough to find one before everyone else they go fast trust me. the family compound kicks butt. wishing you guys the best.
Wow, that’s crazy! We have a tiny house on the property and I haven’t touched. Not sure what do it with it!
Love the idea of a family compound but I've found it does not work out when even one person is going in a different direction. If everyone is on the same page it could be a beautiful thing.
That’s a good point! Everyone needs to be respectful and have a common goal
I've been wanting to do this for myself, sister and two adult nieces with kids. 🤞
I hope you're able to one day!!
It’s a perfect idea. I wish more people would think this way, but from my observation, people would rather struggle than share a house with adult family members. 😢
I lost my mom 11 years ago. I think losing a parent young has definitely changed how I view that.
This is so awesome. Love it!!!!
This is beautiful. It’s also a dream of mine. However, all families are dysfunctional so I really hope your family appreciates you. Good luck.
I have lived through A LOT of dysfunction. My sister and are I trying be break the cycle.
@@flippinggorgeous I pray you break free. God bless you.
What a cool video! “ I love what you’ve done with the place.”
What you said at the beginning: you’ll ever love the idea, or it will be one of your worst nightmares. Right now, I’m not liking it, but as my husband and I get older we might move on my stepdaughter’s property. She has a few acres and already has her brother in law there. Actually, not a bad idea ( if everyone stays in their space 😳….)
Thank you! It sounds like you might have talked yourself into it 😜
I think this is what everybody is going to do. I want a homestead myself.
You should if you can!
My dream is to do the same thing for my family and my sisters.
I would rather make two bedrooms out of the existing bedroom. It would only need a stud wall insulation for noise and of course a door. Then the space in the living dining kitchen remains functional and spacious
Good idea!!
I’m glad you explained because the FBomb had me nope….no reason to come back…..maybe you should edit it out….
fabulous plan - and SMART! Good luck with this endeavor.
Thank you!
No this is how life was meant to be: family close by, people sticking together. This is a dream. I wish I could move in too! Could babysit maybe. Mow the lawn, fix things. And hey! Think of DALLAS and DYNASTY, they all lived together in just small rooms.
I love it!! Great idea!!! Family first!❤
Yes! Thank you!
Friend's Sears Kit House is stamped under the batten board. She found the stamps when doing repairs.
My daughter suggested putting a tiny house for me on the back of her property but I'm not that old yet.
Maybe one day! We actually have a tiny house as well. I have no idea what to do with it!
The bedroom is big enough to split up with a foe wall you could make it a two in one bedroom and keep the cottage the way it is and that would be so much less expensive
Yes I thought this too. At least the children would have a room each and the baby would be less likely to wake the other child.😊
I have said this for the last Twenty Years... to support each other as a family! 🦗🦗🦗😔.
Awesome, Wise!
👏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻♥️
I agree!! Housing and rent has gone way overboard.😢
God bless ❤
Our market is insane!! If we wouldn’t have bought a few years ago we’d be priced out!
It sounds Amazing
Lovely!
I guess it depends on one’s perspective. The more miles between my mother and I, the better.
