  • Sometimes in business people try and take advantage of us. As self employed web developers I'm sure many of you can relate to this. Whether this is in the form of late payments, or not getting paid at all. When it happens it is a complete nightmare.
For experienced self employed developers this can often be a lesson learned the hard way. And a lesson that is hopefully only learned once! So how do we counteract this? How do we ensure, that as web developers, we are not taken advantage of? Well, fortunately there are things we can do to counteract this. Unfortunately the things that we can do may make us feel uncomfortable if we are in the early stages of our self employed web development journey. The important thing is that if someone does take advantage of our kindness or good will, we don't let it happen again.
In this video I reveal a time when someone has tried to take advantage of my good will and what I do now in my web development business to ensure I always get paid.

Great story dude and great link to the business lesson. You assume people would do what you would and it's frustrating when they don't. It almost becomes awkward because you have to point out the obvious, then play along when they deny things

Exactly. That's a good point, we shouldn't feel awkward when it's someone else who is doing us wrong

Just happened to me last week 😂
GGs, upfront payments for the win (unless trust is built!)

It's a nightmare, a lesson you only want to learn once!

I totally agree , thats why i always , get paid by task , i personally dont continue with a project if i dont see any type of payment within the first task completion , if they want to walk over you they couldnt because each task you get paid for , you can just leave not saying you should , however if a client is asking for 20$ USD fixes on a wordpress website , and then asks you to remake that website for the same 20$ USD , you just decline move on and leave it , i am ok sometimes being a little underpaid to match the clients budget but not -10x the price.

I got stuffed once on a poster design for $150. Never again. From then on I ask for 50% up front with a 25% payback if things don't work out. 95% of the time they are fine with it.

The 25% payback is an interesting addition, not thought of doing something like that - must makes it a smoother sale.
It seems to happen far too often unfortunately. Most of us seem to find out the hard way!

@codingoblin yea the 25% back helped a lot with sales and I never had to use it which was awesome.
