Emerald Green arborvitae spacing and planting configuration tips with certified horticulturist Ken Salvail of @growercoach at @BylandsGardenCentre in
So glad I found this video! We planted ours 30" apart and I was so nervous that was too close. Nowhere near touching & they're 4-5' tall right now. We really need them to grow together and 4-5' apart seemed like...well, waiting 15 years isn't an option.
I chose the patient route, and spaced them 3.5 ft. Apart, and it’s been 5 years, and they are now huge, and look much fuller, and healthier than when you plant them close together.
@@seriejohnson698 well, they started out around 3 ft tell on average, they are now averaging around 10ft tall, and just starting to touch at the base. Not a 100% block out privacy screen from my neighbors, but I’d say about 70%, and should be 100% within a couple years. I water them whenever it doesn’t rain much. Clear out winter dead fall, fertilize in the spring, and keep 2 or 3 inches of mulch around them, but not up on the trunk at all. The “instant” privacy arborvitae screens planted close together never end up looking good a few years later, they compete for space, sun, water, and nutrients.
I went with small plants to save money and labor and wide spacing because I think emerald arborvitae are nice as ornamentals and I don't like the look of them crowded and they don't grow healthy that way. My neighbor is a good guy, so I'm not despirately eager for a privacy barrier just yet. Plus I like watching them grow. I find they succeed transplanting when young and small better, too and I can control shaping and pruning without scalping as they mature.
Arborvitae are listed by fire safety experts as one of the most flammable plants due to their high oil content, and fire safety organizations including the NFPA FireWise program recommend against planting them anywhere near a home or structure.
@@rachelearles8768 I planted 7 green giants 5' on center. Yes, I am impatient! I do plan to top them every year at 20 - 25 feet. Planting Emeralds today and thinking 30 - 36". If I did 4 - 5 feet for Emeralds I'd be waiting a long long time for privacy.
That was a masterclass of arbovitae growing tips all in 3 minutes, well done sir.

Right lol I'm gonna do the same thing today.
Wow this was gold information. Thank you so much.

How tall and wide are they now? Thanks

@@chadj79 Thank you for the information.
3.5 trunk to trunk? Or from end of plant to end of plant
@@frankazzuri8984 trunk to trunk

We planted our arborvitaes two feet apart. I hope we don't regret planting them this close together.
Should I lay out some landscape fabric? Or will the mulch do the job?
How far from your home should you plant your first one?
I would say 15” would be the right answer. Does that help?
How often to water them after they established after 2 years? Once a week is Ok?
Can they be planted in the fall? Thank you for the video.
Yes, best time to plant them is in Fall.
Can I put these in a narrow border against a fence thanks
I hope so, because that's exactly what I am doing today. Did it work out for you?
If I were to water the arborvitae everyday for the first 2 months, then will root rot occur?

I didn’t know that, good to know, thanks.
Wow, that's some good info right there!
Where can a person get a compost based mulch?
Will birds nest in them? Hopefully?
Birds have nested in mine
I planted mine 40cm apart. I simply don’t have time to wait 5 years for privacy.
You don't have 5 years of time left?
Haha!

4-5 feet is proper spacing.
Not for emerald greens
