    Another brilliant video!
    36:32 - negligible - first g is a hard sound (great), the second g is soft like the letter j (German). Just reminds me how weird English can be. That's what you get when a Germanic language imports a lot of Romance words

    Friesian (Frisian) (freeze land) is the north part of the Netherlands. They had a viking king for a longtime and have their own official Frisian language. Al traffic signs, street names are in Frisian. Similar as DANISH. As you can see we have more Danish and Norths man influences than Germany. That is why it is easy for Dutch people to understand Scandinavian languages, specially Danish. don't need subtitles, while I never studied it. Grammar is very similar. Pronouncing is different, but not hard. But also the Swedish and Norwegian language is pretty easy to understand. The vikings also left a huge influence on the English language, which is formally a Germanic language.

    • @waspsandwich6548
      @waspsandwich6548 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are 3 distinct frisian languages, too! Also, English is West Germanic but influenced by Brythonic Celts, North Germanic Peoples, and the Norman French

      @hyenalaughingmatter8103 ปีที่แล้ว

      High German is a language Germans learn in school... its not the language (standard) of Germany. Germans can speak Saxon, Bavarian, Swabian Frankish etc. Plattdeutsch, low German might be a language you can understand. Is as close to Danish Swedish Dutch.

    Capitals are usually located where the country's economic and political center of gravity is located; and thus where the main bulk of the population lives.
    Many factors dictate the position of this center of gravity. I can think of a few at the top of my head, for examples:
    -People's mobility:
    A naval culture capable of building strong ships, with trade routes extending out to sea, will most likely have it's economical center of gravity next to the sea. Port cities are dynamic areas.
    Countries with a more terrestrial culture (or landlocked countries) will be defined by people's ability to move on land (horses, carriages, walking...). For these countries, most of their capitals will be located nearest to their geographical center, especially near rivers, which can be used as highways using much cheaper boats than the ones used to sail the seas.
    - Geopolitic fabric / cultural norms:
    Is the risk of invasion high ? If yes, the further away from the border you are, the safer you should be.
    Next to the borders you'll find defensive infrastructures, aswell as minor centers of population.
    It's more costly for the aggressor to penetrate deep in a country, so this is where you want the main administrative center to be.
    - Geography, of course :
    The geography of a country pretty much defines how much the two previous factors will play out.
    Depending on the geopolitical context, you'll find settlements in open plains; next to major rivers, or really close to the sea, when the context is favorable. At the contrary, you'll find smaller fortified settlements scattered on hills when the context is really degraded. A good example of this is the fall of the western roman empire. Gone were the days of the large prosperous roman cities, in their place, came the time for smaller agricultural communities preferring the safety of the hills to face the (many) waves of assailants that the political vacuum attracts.
    Socio-economic factors are the main influence on how demographic disparities form on a given territory.
    I'm so tired right now, I want to add more points, and half of what I wrote is botched, but I just can't right now. Good night 😴
