  • Have you ever wondered what would get someone canceled in Korea? How about being seen wearing fake luxury goods? That's exactly what happened to FreeZia, one of the most popular contestants from the popular Netflix show "Single’s Inferno." You guys asked us to do a follow-up interview on this controversy but we also wanted to dig a bit deeper to understand the cultural mindset when it comes to wearing fake luxury goods. Why do people do that and how do they feel about celebrities constantly getting canceled over seemingly trivial stuff?
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Korean population.
    0:00 - Intro
1:41 - What was the aftermath of the Freezia controversy?
3:42 - Is it fair to receive criticisms for wearing fake goods?
7:25 - How is owning fake goods perceived in Korean society?
11:23 - What's the difference between celebrities and average people wearing fake stuff?
13:08 - Would you want to be famous?

But it seemed just like any other controversial stuffs, in sense that the main reason it was brought upon public attention is only because of some hateful people ravaged and being loud. Most responses from this interview are actually quite mature and sensible. Of course, one can argue because they're being recorded. But they really discussed this thoroughly, they processed everything with consideration, took initiative to speak more about their personal opinions further that weren't exactly related to the questions. Including the girl who said that, I think she was just quoting what she heard online or partially agree out of concern that it might really impact the country in bad way. My point is, sure those pests need to be educated, but they are also just a small-ugly part of society to begin with.

Korean society is just extremely materialistic and hierarchical, and many of them worshipped and idolized this girl because she presented herself as being better than all the average plebs, and now that her facade is cracked they pile on to tear her down to make them feel better about themselves. The lady at 11:22 explains exactly why this is the issue. It's not that big of an issue if the fake goods is purchased by an individual. I mean no one says anything if you "pirate" stream a movie from some weird website. However it becomes an issue if a "Movie theater" streams movie from illegal site.
So that lady is saying that it's an issue because freezia goes from just an individual to a public face. She would have been fine if she was just a private person that does youtube but once she's on mainstream media, and actually starts to get real brand endorsements, I guess people have problem with that. Sure "Fake it til you make it" quote exists but should a Robber(thief) become a Banker?

    • @nyahcat1379
      @nyahcat1379 2 ปีที่แล้ว +59

@@SaNgJuN86 I don't agree with that lady. Celebrities are not public property. They're still people. She said, "private individuals dress for personal satisfaction, while celebrities dress to please the public." That's a twisted way of thinking. Celebrities also have the right to wear whatever they want and express themselves through clothes. They're not public property that have to appease the public to exist.
The lady also claimed that celebrities make money off of looking good. That's not an absolute rule though. In my country, a lot of influencers and famous people don't wear brand clothes, they become famous because of their fun personality, talent, or humor.
I do agree that FreeZia deserves criticism because she was sponsored by those brands but wore fakes. Like you said, movie theaters can't stream pirated copies. It's not because FreeZia is a celebrity, it's specifically because she's sponsored by those brands which is why her actions deserve to be criticized.
But honestly? I don't care. Those multimillion brands don't need ordinary people like us to defend them and attack FreeZia on behalf. Those multimillion brands exploit workers in poorer countries, working in sweatshops in awful conditions. I don't really give a damn if people like FreeZia take advantage of them.

It won't be that different from your country than you think. If only wealth, status, and appearance mattered, there would be absolutely no reason for it to be canceled because it is what freezia has. I know the cancellation about her is excessive. But when it comes to moral standards for celebrities, why do you think it's a lie? Koreans do not realize that celebrities are actually the same human like us, and when they make a mistake, they criticize it excessively and even cancel it. This is because they expect unrealistically high morals from celebrities. All celebrities who are canceled are people with good wealth, status, and good looks.

They uphold this system that socially punishes the mid and lower class majority and allows those with power to continue to hoard resources, against their own interests.

I understand the irony, but is it possible to directly compare products and plastic surgery?
There are other countries that do a lot of plastic surgery. Are they tolerant of fake products? If a famous person in your country falsely claims that a fake brand is a real brand, is there any problem with that?
Of course, it is true that criticism of her is excessive.
But you seem to be saying that Koreans shouldn't criticize fake products. Koreans aren't the only ones who do plastic surgery in Korea. It is famous for it, so many Asians come and Westerners also come. It's all included and the stats come out.
And the most common cosmetic surgery performed by Korean women is double surgery. That's why the statistics are high. And Korea's beauty standards are distorted, and that's because society has a lot of pressure on appearance.
In a situation like this, do you want people to blame each other for the fake face?
Then it becomes another bullring. So people think that plastic surgery is their freedom, no one interferes. But is your country accusing people of plastic surgery as fake? I don't think so. You won't even care about them.
It is absurd to say that people should not criticize fake products just because they have a high rate of plastic surgery. You are saying that because you want to mock Koreans, but that is actually a different matter. Even in other countries, people won't like to see famous influencers on TH-cam or streaming platforms lying about fake brands as if they were real ones. However, it is true that the criticism against her is excessive.

You seem to misunderstand the standards of celebrities in Korea. That's not to say that standards are right.
And Sam spoke as if he was demeaning most Koreans for what some high school students did wrong. He was able to communicate with Koreans in a good way. However, he chose to appear on BBC foreign radio broadcasts and criticize Koreans with foreigners on social media. People thought that his behavior was not the attitude of a celebrity who has been loved in Korea. People felt betrayed and wanted to cancel him.
(I'm not saying the cancellation was justified. I'm talking about what Koreans think about Sam's incident. And not because he's black. Besides that, there are also black people who have recently become famous on Korean TV.) Foreigners and Korean celebrities can criticize Korea, but when it's morally bad, people cancel them. High standards for celebrities refer to high morality and attitude toward viewers and fans. Of course, many Koreans are increasingly aware that it is an excessive expectation of celebrities. If you look at this freezia case, you can clearly see that there is a problem. Celebrities are just human beings. Koreans will need time to change in this area.

My honest opinion on this topic is that Korean society made a lifestyle that isn't possible for most people. If we are talking about fake luxury or pretending to be rich, lets strat about how parents get into debt just so their children can go to top universities or even high schools, this isn't just a problem about her or her fake or unfake lifestyle is about how society makes the pressure on people to be successful and have high paid jobs, how the society expects you to go to high universities and instigates competition since a young age. I feel sorry for her, lose everything just because of some insecure and jello people. Yes, she did a mistake that was using fake in an international reality show and the brands can sue her if they want. But pretending that she commit a big crime, when real criminals get 8 months of a sentence or do community service is really pathetic. They just make her the escape to their unsolved insecurities and not achievements.

Since then I have seen her growth and my opinion never changed, moreover, she taught me to love and appreciate myself more, to dress the way I want without caring what others are gonna think (she gave so many good advice about styling clothes!). All her videos were great, interesting and I could see how passionate she is about the TH-cam and grateful to her subscribers.
Seeing her in this situation, I can totally understand that she was wrong, but I will never accept the cancelling and dead threats that people are writing on the Internet. They don’t know her at all, and most of those haters simply envy the success and lifestyle that she had.

Insensitive comments and death threats are part and parcel of celebrity life. If I were her, I'd just grow a thick skin and ignore all those losers.

@@larkspurzThis is how an influencer's life is. All companies that sponsored her dropped their deals, this was her source of income. And social media culture in Korea is much more different than the West, cyber bullying is very real and harsh as compared to the west.

Wow... I mean I'm not really her fan, but the punishment she's getting is like a serious crime. I mean, as if the personal attack is not enough, they go as far as saying she humiliates Korea as a nation. Whatta joke.

lol ironically those netizens don't even realize THEY and their immature reactions are what is humiliating Korea, not Jia at all. hahahaha... such out of touch mindset...

i find it hilarious, and so hypocritical. korean streets are lined up with stalls selling knock off designer items. she didn’t deserve any of this, she had her youtube channel before she became extremely well known and now shes lost everything.

Reading through these comments I am very confused. In the video it clearly shows why she is being criticized and that's because of high moral standard in South Korean society and yet the comments seem to derail from what's actually said and trying to depict SK in bad way intentionally.

It is as if people did not watch the video. With fame comes extreme scrutiny. Anyone becoming famous should expect old unflattering (or damaging?) stories/videos/photos to come out. I think it was irresponsible of her to wear fake items on a Netflix show. It is wrong as well that she passed fake items off as real in her vlogs and even gave them away as gifts. Not sure if you will be thought of as a credible ambassador by brands, unless you plan to endorse a brand specializing in knock offs. More than that, I guess as an influencer, people assume that you are more genuine than traditional celebrities (idols/actors). With the controversy and allegations that she faked even her family background, it became more damaging for her.

Probably because attacking her so much even her family isn't suitable to "high moral standard "

I still hope that one day will come for humans to realize that people can and should be given a chance to redeem themselves. A mistake does not and will not define who you truly are. Instead, it serves as a lesson for someone to be better.
How can that person be better when the society cancels and demean you plus your love ones?

I feel that they never really answered the questions. They just kind of kept repeating, in different words, the same surface level reasoning for jia’s treatment. They never think deeper, about why they are judging her more harshly than celebrities, and why they care more about protecting brands than a human’s emotions and life.
I want to keep asking, “but why” after each of their responses until they reason themselves into seeing that the response to jia is unfair and hypocritical, and perhaps sexist.
