I don't understand why you would ask her to tear the picture and then seemingly mock her for not wanting to. Shes clearly very traumatized, I couldn't imagine what it would be like to literally wake up one day and realize your whole life was a lie. She has to constantly live in fear of the North Korean government coming after her and her family and you asked her to do something that would literally be a death sentence in NK in front of a camera for views???
it was not a lie have u been to North Korea? Do u know the history and why did they get in that situation? say thank u to ur "amazing' WEST, who is hated today for all wars and coups in Global South
When a language isn’t practiced anymore, you can forget it. Especially since she has been learning and living in South Korea for years now (as she can communicate with the other girl with ease). I’ve learnt a language since I was a kid but haven’t practiced it for only 2 months (practiced another language for everyday use instead) and forgot to even say pants so… definitely understandable.
I completely agree with the comment above. I am Colored (term used in South Africa to describe people of mixed-race heritage. Example: I'm South African, Indian, and French.) and grew up in South Africa the majority of my youth so I could speak Afrikaans fluently, through classes could speak Hindi fluently and English was my first language but when I moved to France and had to learn french I stopped speaking Hindi and Afrikaans completely to be able to learn french (and cuz I had nobody really to speak the languages with) I now can barely string a coherent sentence in Afrikaans and Hindi but because I still spoke English with my parents and siblings it still remains my mother tongue and I speak it fluently, and basically replaced Hindi and Afrikaans with French now😅
But also it can just be trauma. Trauma can significantly impact memory. For example, some ex-nazi soldiers who were forced into service at a young age, and survivors of the Rwandan Genocide have forgotten their native language and in some cases basically everything that they experienced due to what they had to live through and/or the horrors that they had to commit. So it's not actually that odd that she basically woke up 1 day and realised that her entire life and everyone entire lives in the country that she lived in has just been all based on lies fabricated by government, and somehow managed to successfully escape one of the most isolated and restricted countries in the world, knowing damn well that if she failed she'd be at best harshly interrogated (probs even tortured) then thrown into a labour camp with like 3 gen of her family and at worst exected might block out parts of their past, including their language wether it's conscious or subconscious
It was really ignorant of you to ask her to tear the picture without informing her beforehand. Thank god her reactions are very well-measured. She is also very classy by the way. I am impressed.
agree with this. it's too much and ignorant. just because he's not their president, doesn't mean you can do something like this to "former" resident of the country (this not only about NK), in public space (everybody can watch this video) glad they provide the timeline, so i can skip it to another topic.
I've watched a lot of interviews from North Korean defectors and this girl's story, I can say that she is in middle/upper class because it was like smooth. Also they live in the city bordering China and easy for her to defect because some of the North Korean defectors really had a hard time to escape.
I'm not sure if it's a thing South Korea to assume North Korean people aren't korean or that they don't look korean....but North and South were once ONE nation.
I have read about this escape route defectors take, but I do not know if they are already safe once they arrive in Vietnam or they must reach Thailand in order to consider themselves safe.
Because Vietnam and China have very good diplomatic relations and also in Vietnam there are many North Korean spies. they even have an authentic North Korean restaurant run by workers from North Korea, the restaurant is also even rumored to be the headquarters of North Korean spies. therefore many of those who fled from there are very avoiding China and Vietnam.
I think if the defectors are really important or have known lots of secrets about NK then doing this kind of video. They are nowhere to be safe, NK spies are everywhere. It's just my opinion.

@@mariamarselina-px3ru Who said to you that in Viet Nam there are many spies from North Korea? And there are restaurants run by workers from North Korea? This is the first time hearing this made up story lol, I'm Vietnamese and I cant stand for that lmao. Vietnam and China have a complex and multifaceted diplomatic relationship characterized by both cooperation and tension. The fact that the relationship between Viet Nam and China mentioning (Lào Cai and Yunam), which are trade and import-export and tourism. Spies in Viet Nam? Ridiculous.

Once you have arrived at the Vietnamese border, you can consider yourself safe. We always have support teams at each border gate to classify migrants. If migrants are illegal and have committed crimes, we will take appropriate actions, such as contacting their home country. Vietnam is very strict in this matter to ensure the safety of both the country and its citizens. There are many articles about this; illegal migrants to Vietnam are quickly sent back to their home countries, ensuring they are not harmed. For example, recently, there have been many South Korean criminals coming to Vietnam to escape prosecution and engage in illegal activities. They have all been apprehended within days of entering the country. Those who need rescue or accidentally enter Vietnamese territory are supported if necessary. I am Vietnamese, and our country is very kind, so don't worry or believe in misleading rumors about Vietnam. We are a communist country, but we are very different from China and North Korea, with a high degree of freedom and equality.
Anyway, if you got caught by Vietnamese, Laos, Cambodian and/or Chinese police you will be deported straight to North Korea immediately. So you need to reach about like 3-4 countries illegally with nothing to get to Thailand and be returned to South Korea. Or from China you can go to my country, Mongolia. But you need to have a good amount of water and food to survive in the Desert of the Gobi. If you got through the Desert of the Gobi, you're safe. Police officers will transfer to the Embassy of South Korea (I'm not sure, btw we have North Korean Embassy too :) ). Then you get a new passport and live in South Korea or any country else
I sincerely hope she and her whole family will be fine and live happily ever after ! And with this interview and reveal wont cause her and her family any issue❤
That's a good story. But what if North Korea sees this and knowing the escape routes and other sensitive information. Do they do anything serious about it?
They know about it, it's just China generally is the one who allows them to defect, NK cannot go against China, that's usually where they get their contacts from, from Chinese who help North Koreans escape, usually the Chinese government has to step in but in reality they allow it
normally they cross laos by night in the jungle and then cross the mekong river. mayby she could not remeber it. what i always do not understand is, why they do not try to flee over russia to japan. in theory that should be much easier. a lot less people, no cameras and no one cares. sure you need a bot, but most north korean refugees get help by the korean church anyway and they should have enough money for one or two japanese fishing boats. p.s. arte has a fairly recent documentary about how to that works. but is in either german or french.
Russia is a communist country so I think they have a similar behaviour as China, Japan is divided by sea ...it's more difficult to arrive there swimming and bot be caught
This is only a comment about how this video was cut. Not the content! If this was a "film school" -project you would have failed. Sorry. 😂 The rapid clips during the dialogue with extreme changes in background contrast is a big "No No". 😉

From what I know, if they reach the Mongolian border, they will be taken to custody and get examined to see if they are spies or real refugees. After the examination they will be set on an airplane to South Korea where they get citizenship in South Korea.

Yeah I immediately thought wow this took a LOT of money cause they had a broker each step of the way
And maybe, just maybe, also because she said so.....
i think most defectors are upper class
Doesn’t that mean she would have to travel from China to South Korea, either by foot or plane? I don’t think China allowed defectors back then.
Wow just by her explaining the story of how she escaped gave me goosebumps😟

I don't understand. I already saw these very same interviews months ago. 🤨 Maybe it's a pack of them all.
it's a compilation yes it's in the title
yes it’s a compilation, considering the video is almost an hour long
I was also confused! I guess the title is easy to miss cos it's all the way at the end and hard to see on mobile.

A lake between vietnam and thailand? There are two countries between Thailand and Vietnam though. Cambodia and Laos are in between. So how is there a lake? 😮
They share a maritime border
They are referring to the Gulf of Thailand. It is technically an inlet but lake makes some sense too.
Please tell me how did you escape North Korea
They said it in the vid
Why is the south korean girl laughing… so inappropriate
It's shock
They do it because they're shocked or it's a natural response if she feels awkward or embarrassed.

south korea doesn't send back north korean defectors, they're actually given automatic citizenship in the south
