Outside of the players and coaches, no one knows what was said or what happened in the case of Michael Carter III. That said, when a coach makes the decision to dismiss a player from the program - something significant took place or there was an accumulation of offenses which reached a tipping point and ultimately led to the player's dismissal. In my opinion, there's no way dismissing a player who contributed as much as Michael did to the program was "snap decision". I hope the best for all involved. I think the players and staff at Long Beach State have been incredible this season considering they've been trying to complete a season in an area of the country which has been the hardest hit in regards to COVID. It would be nice to see them make some noise in the Big West tournament - which they are very capable of doing. And I hope the best for Michael. He's now been at three college programs: Washington, South Dakota State and Long Beach. There's no denying his talent. I'm sure there will be suitors. But he needs to be a little self-reflective, do his homework and make the right decision on his future. Because his options will be very limited at this point.
The situation with Michael Carter could have been handled a whole let better. Just tell Michael to take the night off, cool his head, then rejoin the team Monday for the bus trip to Vegas. In sacking Carter, you not only run the risk of seeing him enter the portal and sign with Irvine, you now run the risk of ending the season on a losing streak combined with a season-ending loss to CSUN, of all teams and perhaps some personal payback in order. If we do replace the coach, the first thing is to reinstate Carter but also bring in a behavioral specialist to control that competitive fire. Sacking Carter will not fix the problem. It's essentially putting lipstick on a pig, and I can only hope Monson pays for it bigly.
