- Marine Raiders are the Corps’ special operations unit and the newest addition to US Special Operations Command. Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) was established in 2006, and the unit’s critical skills operators were officially designated “Raiders” in 2015 - a tribute to and extension of the proud legacy of the Marine Raider battalions of World War II, which were developed as a special missions force in 1942 and disbanded two years later.

If 3 weeks selection wasn't bad enough... The 9 month training course consisting of 4 phases is just nuts!
Those 9 months were the hardest of my entire life. Hell the selection was hell on its own.
Selection is technically 7-8 weeks, phase 1 and 2 are both 4 weeks long. But I agree

@@maxb4210 The whole thing is just a 21 day suck fest in my opinion. In one day we had a 12 mile ruck, multi-hour land nav test, 1 km swim in combat gear, 11 minute water tread (that was more like 20 minutes), and after all that we had to do intelligence and awareness tests and recite basic terminology we learned early. No breaks, no meals until the end of it, and we operated on only an hour or two of sleep.
Basically, it is the same as Ranger Selection, but with more water oriented work.
The hardest part of selection is integrity and personality/character. Many guys are good marines in all ways on paper, but something about their personality would clash with the guys currently in the Raider Regiment so they are cut.
If you want to make it you need to be smart, have a high stress tolerance, and be able to work with and be compatible with any number of personalities. The personality is big because it isn't about being the BEST Marine, it is about being the RIGHT Marine.
My dad was in the 3rd Raider battalion in WW2. Never spoke of his experiences till a couple of years before his death. He told my brother the story of the battle of Sugar Loaf Hill in Okinawa. When Corpsman had the opportunity to remove the dead from the battlefield. When a soldier was missing a limb, they would pick up the nearest one. Think about that.

The title MARSOC Raiders is so badass. It fits in with the Marines Scarlet and Gold colors. Very powerful.
Raiders are more or less Commandos that can operate in small groups and beyond normal infantry lines. They in effect are a mixture of a ranger and commando in the context of marine warfare.

Good friend a mines brother was chosen to be apart of one of the first reopened raider units. He had something around 30 confirmed kills, I read his citations from the battle of Fallujah and shit was no joke. Real life badass

My uncle, older brother of my father joined the Marine Reserve. The company was of the 1st of the 5th Battalion. The 1/5 was activated and was used to see the usefullness of assaulting beaches in rubber inflatables, They were call the 1st Special battalion. An idea was raised of possible marine units being like British Commandos. It was decided to go. The 1/ 5 became the 1st Raider and was commanded by Col. Edson. There is a book titled " Edson's Raiders" that tells the story of the 1st Raiders. They trained hard and were tough. Today's training makes the 1942 training look like a day camp.

@@joshyman91297 I mis wrote. I meant the training in 1942 was a day camp compared to today. The training of first two battalions were , both, not standard. The 1st and 2nd leaders had different ideas about being physically ready. Today's training is the result of past traininb results
Not sure about that 1942 training/ remember they did not have the benefit modern equipment. We should not compare eras because all of these marines willing to die in training

To have a three to one edge. Here it was two to one. My uncle was KIA on August 7th 1942. The day of the beginning of defeating Japan..

Marines that are in a combat mos are trained extremely well, they stay deployed and go through everything from jungle warfare to desert warfare training. Non combat mos marines still are required to stay in top physical shape, and are all basic rifleman, they all went through SOI and train with grunt units. So all these marines you see in this video are in excellent shape , and probably have 18 to 24 months training. The marine corps will also send you or attach you to another unit for specialized training, such as NBC , special weapons, advanced combat swimming, and hand to hand combat. Im sure some of these men fall into this category as well. Camp Lejeune was my duty station for 4 years, I'm proud to have served and proud to all these men that have sacrificed to put themselves through even more phases of elite training..

I was in SOI immediately after parris Island, the men I went through it with had different mos... we had several 3381's ( food services) we also had 0111 ( administration specialists) All WENT through soi.... maybe things have changed now, I'm no longer active duty, I find it hard to believe the marine corps stop doing this... because every marine is a basic rifleman.

@@bitkrusher5948 every Marine goes to SOI after boot. Combat MOS or not. I was a DOC attached to SOI Companies before going to the fleet. The Grunt Marines go through ITB (Infantry Training Battalion) 60 days long, and the non-combat Marines go through MCT (Marine Combat Training) 30 days long, but all are at the School of Infantry after they leave the depot on either coast.

You can go to various MOS and still try out for MARSOC but they encourage people to come from infantry. Your choice. What decides you passing and being selected is YOU, IMO.

I never understood what MARSOC's niche was. Their mission set seems like a mixture of Ranger, SF, SEAL stuff.
As odd as it may be. Its in the name. Raiders. Their purpose was was alot more obvious back in the 1800s when the US was expanding into the asian islands and countries. The whole purpose of the marine raiders is literally, as simplistic as i could put it is to be invaders, pillage plunder raze. ATTACK ATTACK. That was their whole purpose. Essentially they were pirates, but not a very firendly descriptive word i guess. Marine Raiders purpose was to literally RAID RAID. Like ac valhalla raid.
But gwot kind of changed their modus operandi, no longer “raiding”. And more of a land mobile troop than a mobile ocean force meant to raid and cause essentially chaos on enemy ocean front.
But now with the end of gwot (for the most part), they can return to their purpose of ocean island raiding.
And whenever the war in asia kicks off aka most likely against china, the purpose of marine raiders would be to island hop and raid enemy ocean fronts.
Many dont realize but from the main branches: army, air force, marine, and navy.
Marine is the only branch that has every asset built internal within the organization. And by proxy, marines should essentially be part of navy. So navy would be the only brach that has every asset built internal within its branch. It has land troops (marines), its own air force (air craft carriers), and everything else on the ships for bombing, artillery, etc.
They exist for budgetary reasons and so some officer could get a promotion.
Equivalent of Army SF and SEALS.
This is my goal one day and I’m going to do anything possible to achieve this the men that I have meet that were raiders they held themselves with so much pride but very humble and clam.

@@SV-kr9fu Special Tactics Aerial Recovery Specialists (STARS) are the space force’s special operations search/rescue/recovery unit similar to air force PJ’s. Special Tactics Orbital Reconnaissance/Munitions Specialist (STORMS) are space force specialists who infiltrate discreetly behind enemy lines to establish ground-based observation posts of enemy units and territory, and eventually will be capable of directing Munitions/Ordinance-Orbital Network Satellites (MOONS) to direct space-based weapon platforms. Basically they are like air force combat control teams (CCT)and tactical air control parties (TACP), but instead of calling in airstrikes from planes, they use computers and laser designators to call down energy based weapons from orbital satellites.

What do you guys think? Any marine who is qualified and assigned to MARSOC/Raider units is authorized to replace their barracks cap with a special beret. Yes, they still wear those awesome officer hats in their formal uniform, but in the brown uniform raider from private to staff sergeant get a “blood stripe” red beret with black leather band, gunnery sergeant to master gunny gets a “gunnery gold” yellow beret with white leather band, and officers get a “jungle raider” green beret with ww2 style brown leather band . They all use the red, white, and blue raider skull flash.
There basically like GCP units in the french army, except they dont do the "get thrown off a plane" part, still quite cool howerver

Actually green berets specialize in augmenting and training local host nation forces to fight against common enemies. Delta are handpicked mostly from green beret A teams (SOMETIMES from rangers or airborne). Raiders are more closely related to army rangers. Whereas rangers are primarily air assault (helicopter fast rope) the raiders are amphibious (landing craft or patrol boats). Arguably the raiders can be called the marine version of navy seals BUT seals specifically take Basic Underwater Demolitions courses (BUDS), whereas raiders receive traditional ordinance training (c4 or semtex). Raiders were essentially just heavy force recon units in ww2, so i suspect the desire to bring back the moniker of “raider” has more to do with a high ranking career pencil pusher wanting a promotion for an edgy new unit organization.

Raiders or Marine raiders is a name I've read from Guadalcanal battle during WW2 in Pacific. I love their pirate tactics and raids and flanking maneuvers not to mention the facing enemies like Imperial Japanese fanatics behind their lines in worst terrains is more badass than most special forces in my opinion. The Americans would've lost without Raiders and Japanese would take back necessary airfields which will prolong the war causing more casualties. Despite horrible conditions and limited supplies (because the entire Japanese fleet surrounded them) how they achieved their objectives, is beyond me. They're like entire species

I remember i was flying from Kosovo to Turky and from turky to USA and i meet one marine in airplane and he told me he was going for the testing of marine raiders but i didn’t know what is this union but now i understand what he was talking he said to this is my dream he told me he was preparing for those tests for 2 years 6 days workouts and crossfit, he was speaking with pension about raiders and i was listed him but at the time i didn’t understand him.

I’ll be a raider one day
Sure, just as soon as you take the joint out of your mouth and hit the gym. My advice; if you really wanna serve give yourself 6 months to get clean and workout everyday. Then join the air force. The training is much easier and the pay is still the same. If you do security forces (military police), you take a 3 month school after bootcamp where you learn how to use machine guns, grenade launchers, assault rifles, law enforcement, hand to hand combat, vehicle convoy defense, and airbase security. If it seems to easy for you after the first few years, volunteer for phoenix raven school. It’s a relatively short, but exercise intensive class where you learn how to provide advanced security for air force planes when they travel to other countries. When you graduate you are given your raven number (still only 4 digits because there are so few ravens in the air force currently). You go back to your home base and do normal security force duty, but when a mission comes up you and a small team get on a plane and fly to another country and spend a few days or weeks just standing guard around the aircraft while it is parked. Easy work (maybe a little boring), but it is fairly prestigious in the air force and you get to travel all over the world. Security forces also get to wear dark blue berets in uniform as opposed to the ugly and boring ball caps that everyone else wears in uniform. Maybe try your local air national guard station. Theyre the best kept secret in the military; all the benefits with a fraction of the work, hotter chix, better food and housing, less dangerous, great community college system, and it’s all only one weekend a month plus a week in summer.
@@RogersGirl88 I’m pretty active even with the joint in my mouth, but I understand I gotta get clean and I appreciate your info and knowledge. I wasn’t looking to get into this for something easy. I prefer to challenge myself with the hardest task possible even if I come up short I’ll still be successful hopefully. I’m still not 100% sure which branch to enlist in so I still haven’t quit smoking honestly.

@@brandonlubner9203 i didnt mention it earlier, but since you replied i have one other recommendation if you seek a “challenge”. Air force has the best special operations tier 1 unit in the us military. Parajumpers (PJ’s) take 2 full years of training to earn their Crimson Berets (blood red) and their Pararescueman Badge (with the motto “that others may live”). They have 1 main job. They deploy to combat zones, wait around until friendly forces come under attack and get wounded, and then they load up in pave low helicopters and fly right into the thick of the fighting to rescue wounded soldier, marines, rangers, green berets, etc. They fast rope out of the choppers and provide advanced first aid treatment, while the aerial gunners in the chopper lay down suppressive fire with miniguns. They patch up the wounded friendlies and load them into the evac helicopter. If you ever saw Black Hawk Down, the guy who says he will make everybody margheritas was a PJ. They are right in the thick of the danger, they are beloved by all the us military special ops guys, their training is the toughest in the military, and they dont have to sleep in foxholes since they live on base near the medical station. Rangers and SF are the same tier, different missions. While MARSOC/Raiders themselves, are mainly based on SF & ODAs who helped form the unit. That's why Raiders have such a heavy emphasis on FID operations.

Funny how CoD totally left out the fact that MARSOC started by beheading 1st and 2nd Force Recon Company of its best dudes and designating them as special by throwing them SOCOM funding. Recon Marines are the foundation of MARSOC, they just don’t get DoD daddy money.
And then they got tossed out of Afghanistan for being too good at killing terrorists. Its incredible how awful the DoD treats its operators.

When I was in Afghanistan 2010-2011, we shared a jcop/garrison with some MARSOC guys. They came rolling back in one day from operations outside the wire and one of their guys had an ND coming back through the main gate… lol. Funny story, not shitting on anyone just sharing a story

Force Recon is the Marine equivalent of Army SF and SEALS. MARSOC is arguably America's most advanced group most likely exceeding Delta Force.

Singleton recce, all the crazy shit that’s too risky, CAG does it. Marsoc is good at SFs job, maritime ops, decent at raiding, but no chance they do recce, hostage rescue, HVT shit better than CAG.

I was curious. I am going to be trained as an ATC or Air Traffick Controller for my MOS. I am not in a combat MOS so could I still become special forces or join Marsoc?
Yep, they pull from any mos combat or not and suprisingly pull a lot of guys from non combat mos due to the fact that they are fresh and have no bad habbits which infantry guys pick up pretty quick. This is what i’m doing i go to selection later this year and i am a comms marine

Marine Raiders were stood up
And manned originally by Force Recon Marines. Those Recon Marines performed the “Raider” Mission for years before the actual Raider Schoolhouse was stood up and they performed it off the Force Recon Skillset. Since then have they advanced their capabilities? Absolutely!! The original Marine Raiders operated in World War 2 for about 2 years and disbanded and became 4th Marine Regiment conventional Marine “Grunts”. In fact 4th Marines still carry the Original Raiders Battle Streamers on their Guide On. Facts. The modern Marine Raiders are incredible Marines and have excelled in every assignment they’ve been handed but their heritage, their foundation and their “ancestors” are Force Recon Marines period. They know it too. The fact a bunch of Non Force Recon Officers have written us out of their formation, original mission success, training and tone setting is bullshit. We are very very very proud of them in spite of that and Semper Fi!!!!
I was in that first SOC platoon at 3rd Recon back in 1988. (Third Force was not active then) When General Al Gray became Commandant shit really took off. We got our 1911’s back and got brand new MP-5’s. Training was kick ass!
@@dloverland 2nd Force Recon was SOC qualified and deployed with 24 MEU in 88 they had done two other SOC deployments before that, they started learning CQB from LA County Sheriffs SWAT before that. I was in 2/8 on that MEU. Bet I know guys in your platoon brother!!

This is a good video about MARSOC Raiders. And yet, I wonder why do they show these Marines training in Army fatigues and uniforms? Also they have a plethora of weapons and equipment. Anyone who ever served in the Corps knows that every Marine gets the lowest, least amount of gear because of the shoestring budget at the Pentagon!!!!!
They're wearing multicam now because that's what the rest of SOF is wearing and they're keeping in line with them. MarSoc is also under SOCOM, so they have all the funding they could want for weapons and equipment, hence all the new stuff.
Any SOF unit will have better gears, you can't expect marine recon/raiders to have the same equipment as conventional marine corps units
Yes .. they are SOCOM, a different chain of command and budget. They get socom money, not usmc money
