I absolutely loved how they all played their part to trap Wei Yanwan. I never expected the Empress Dowager to participate! I'm so happy she did! She made sure Ruyi would be vindicated.
One of the sons between Ruyi and Hailan. During the funeral, he comes up outside of the palace and he bumps into the emperor and shows the emperor the letter that she wrote for him. If I'm remembering correctly, there is some comment made by the empress Dowager that it's a shame that he wasn't chosen to become emperor because he had been raised perfectly and Hailan would have made the perfect Empress dowager ( and I'm sure, considering that if she had lived, Ruyi would not have minded taking up the same position that her aunt was supposed to get).
@@JoeyMarx In this depiction, that seems just right, and it suggests how intemperate Emperor Qianlong had become that he couldn't see this. There is little to glean from history, since Qianlong (or his successor) went to great lengths to erase all information about the Ulu-Nara empress. This in itself could be a confirmation of sorts of Qianlong's state of mind. But that's getting a little too far ahead of the evidence.
@@jaduvoisin Honestly, I completely agree with everything that you said. Especially if we're talking about only the context of the show, it makes no sense that when Jia was found to be scheming with the emperor's death in mind, her and her sons had such significant consequences, but Wei Yanwan got her death but her son was still allowed to stay in the royal lineage. It is a shame that we most likely will never know the truth of things due to the erasure of history and just certain things not ever being recorded.
@JoeyMarx Warning, my reply got a little long: Your comment got me confused a little - is it possible that you oversaw a few details due to all that scheming? There are no further children left, but the youngest son of Ruyi. Hailan‘s only son, Yongqi, got killed off by Wei‘s elaborate scheming plot. So there doesn’t seem to be a chance for Hailan to be made empress dowager unless the future emperor decided to do so. You write that Ruyi wouldn’t have minded taking up the same position that her aunt had, but that aunt was actually the former empress who got banned and then poisoned by Queen Dowager, so I‘m not sure what you mean here. I can only say that Ruyi had never wanted to be in her aunt’s position, because she didn’t crave the empress’s seat and she feared of receiving the same fate her aunt did - which ultimately happened. She lost favour, got banned and had to live in solitude. Also, Hailan didn’t really like the emperor - different from Ruyi she did not have any feelings for him. We get to know this from one of their conversations around the middle of the series, I‘d say. So I don’t know if she would have taken that path, especially with Ruyi being still alive. Hailan‘s loyalty to her was bigger than anything else - remember she sacrificed her unborn child to get Ruyi out of the Cold Palace. If that isn’t love, then I don’t know what is! That’s why I don’t think she would ever step a rang higher than her true soulmate. So now with Ruyi‘s son left as a possible successor - her last wish for him was to be „free“ and live his life the way he wanted (the letter he read to his father). I felt like the emperor kind of respected that. It also got portrayed in the show that Wei‘s son showed some skills at an early age, so maybe they saw him as especially talented and suited here. Regarding Jia‘s sons, now „demoted“ to dukes. I think it was not „only“ Jia‘s plotting and talking too big of her sons, but also the horse incident that made the emperor lose his trust in Yongzhuang (*don‘t know if I got his name right). Yongzhuang was not a child anymore in their eyes. The incident before that was his lack of fialty shown to the first empress during her funeral. Remember, he - together with Yongchuang - failed to show emotions, which upset the emperor. So after all of that I‘d say the emperor has had enough of it. Personally I’d say you are right - why would they choose Wei‘s son over the others, but since all their mothers turned out to be murderers… maybe they believed he could still be formed. The most logical choice would indeed be Ruyi’s son. But what did we expect with all that late insanity and illogical behavior of the emperor in the show? If you’re interested, there is another series which is basically the prequel to Ruyi, it’s called „Empresses in the Palace“. It tells the story of Queen Dowager (played by Sun Li) and is basically ending where Ruyi starts (written by the same author, who had a cameo in Ruyi btw). That drama is top tier as well. Amazing actors, amazing set, great music, the villainess even worse than Jia! Ruyi is still my favorite, but it shows the way of Zhen Huan climbing up and becoming Queen Dowager. The plotting and scheming there was hard to digest, Ruyi transmits a certain calmness to me when viewing it, that’s why I actually prefer this beautiful drama. I can rewatch the shorts and clips of Ruyi as much as I want - I never grow tired of it. 😅I like all characters.
