“Shipwrecked: Reflections of a Sole Survivor” by Dennis Hale (Bicknell Lecture Series: 2013-2014)

In this presentation for the Dr. Frank Bicknell Lecture Series, Dennis Hale describes his experience as the sole survivor of the sinking of the Daniel J. Morrell, a massive ore freighter which broke in half and sank in Lake Huron in 1966. Hale also previews a documentary about the ship and its discovery in Lake Huron in the lecture.
Dennis Hale was a watchman in the pilothouse of the Daniel J. Morrell on its final trip of the 1966 season, headed to Minnesota to pick up a load of iron ore. The vessel encountered heavy winds and waves and broke apart in the storm. Hale has written an account of his experience, which is available through Amazon here: www.amazon.com....
About the Bicknell Lecture Series:
In 1987, Dr. Frank Bicknell, a long time Grosse Pointe resident and well-known Detroit Medical Center urologist, celebrated his 80th birthday. His daughter and son-in-law established the Grosse Pointe Historical Society's Bicknell Fund to mark his milestone birthday. This fund established the Dr. Frank Bicknell Lecture Series; all Bicknell Lectures are free of charge and open to everyone.

Great video. Thank you Dennis for sharing your experience on the Daniel J Morrell. I was a sailor myself on the USS America CVA-66 back in the 70's. I loved being at sea watching flight ops I wish I could do it again.
